eePeSKY "Connecting..." and nothing else

Post by acklenx »

So I managed to use just the microSD card to update both the firmware (to r218) and the Bootloader (to 1.7) on my Turnigy 9XR Pro. I apparently did this with the same file (ersky9xr_rom.bin) - that seems pretty bizarre, I would have expected they would be different files (but maybe I just missed the fact that they were different). I did this via SD card because I couldn't connect using a USB cable.

Now (with bootloader 1.7) when I turn off my transmitter and plug in a USB cable to both computer and transmitter, then power on transmitter... I instantly get a screen that reads:

Boot Loader V1.7Ready

Connecting...

F1
E1

If I turn off the transmitter the screen remains the same. At no point to I here any beeps from my computer detecting a new device. Changing ports on my computer does not work and I've tried three different USB cables. So since the device isnt' recognized I tried scanning for new devices (this is Windows 10 Home). I hit the windows keys and type "devices" then selected "devices and printers" then selected "add a device". The only device found is "HP Truevision HD POS Barcode Scanner". I do not have now, nor have I ever had (or heard of) such a device. I get this message if I disconnect the usb cable from my computer (so it may be a red herring - sadly I did not check this state before connecting the radio the first time).

I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction so I can get things working via USB. Failing that it is possible to use eePeSKY to set up the radio with only the SD card? It doesn't appear so. And while less than desirable it would be better than where I am now.

The bootloader and the application are in the single file.
Are your USB ports all USB3? There have been problems reported with USB3.
Make sure you use a USB cable that you know works with another device, some cables are "charge only".
When you see "Connecting", it means the radio has seen the USB power, and so waits for some USB data. It should appear as two hard drives. This works OK on my PC with Windows 10 home-64 bit and USB 2 ports.

If you flash a test version of r219, you would get an option to backup your EEPROM to the SD card, and this could then be read by eepskye, edited, then written back. Then you could use the restore EEPROM option.

So, I did read this forum first... and I did try multiple cables that I was sure worked for data (I don't buy non-data cables). But as I searched for anything in my house that used an old micro usb cable to test with, I came across an mobius camera that also had problems. So I searched on an eventually found a microscope camera. Well the cable with that worked on the microscope... and with the 9XR! Interestingly two of the other usb cables also works with the microscope. The microscope cable is very snug fit with near a snap finish.

My radio still only display's "Connecting" even though it is working.

Where can I get a copy of this r219? I like the idea of being able to play with more advanced configurations (Battle bots) on my computer away from my transmitter).

Thanks for taking the time to make me do again what you and everyone else already said (check the cables).

My 9XR-PRO when new needed the USB connector to be pushed a bit more firmly into the socket. So, make sure the connector is well inserted in the radio..
The radio will display "connecting" even if it is already connected to the computer, that is normal behavior.
You can get test versions of ErSky9x here.

ACKLENX, I'm having the same issue. I've tried multiple USB Cables and USB3 and USB2 ports. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 and ersky9xr_rom218.bin (bootloader is still v1.1) from the link JHSA has provided and I'm unable to get eepe or eepSky to find my transmitter. I just get a constant "Connecting..." notification on my screen.

Also, my PC cannot load drivers for the TX when I connect it. I never see the 2 Removable Drives that should appear when connecting to the computer. I checked my SD card for MAC formatting, as I've heard this can be an issue, and I formatted the card to Windows but still no luck.

I've tried the programs from both of these locations but with no luck - viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4676 and https://code.google.com/archive/p/eepe/

I've also tried backing up the models to the SD card, taking the card out of the TX and copying them manually to my PC to edit in the eepe or eepSkye programs I've downloaded and either the programs won't read them, or the models will open but none of the settings I've built in the TX appear on the PC.

With all of the different versions of these programs and firmwares, it would be nice to have 1 central location to find everything, especially since the Google Docs seems to have moved around a bunch of stuff which makes following the Manuals and older forums posts very confusing.

Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated!
Quite frustrating....

When you connect the USB, and see "Connecting . . " on the radio display, does the PC show any indication (tones etc.) that a USB device has been connected?
Windows 7 64bit (Home) worked fine for me. I've now updated to Windows 10.

The radio displays connecting even when it is actually connected, that is normal.
Also, my PC cannot load drivers for the TX when I connect it. I never see the 2 Removable Drives that should appear when connecting to the computer. I checked my SD card for MAC formatting, as I've heard this can be an issue, and I formatted the card to Windows but still no luck.
If you have bootloader v1.1, I think you have to power the radio while holding both horizontal trims towards the center of the radio. Only after that you can connect the USB cable. Make sure the USB connector is fully inserted in the radio's USB socket.

I've also tried backing up the models to the SD card, taking the card out of the TX and copying them manually to my PC to edit in the eepe or eepSkye programs I've downloaded and either the programs won't read them, or the models will open but none of the settings I've built in the TX appear on the PC.
Don't use eepe with the 9XR-PRO. You should use ONLY eepskye. Please download the latest version from http://www.er9x.com

Also, update the bootloader. You said you already have the file " ersky9xr_rom218.bin" on your SD Card. make sure the file is inside a folder called "firmware".
Then turn your radio ON while holding both horizontal trims AWAY from the center, so, towards the sides of the radio.
You are now in the "Maintenance Menu".
The first option is "Update Bootloader". Select it. Then select the ersky9xr_rom218.bin file and press MENU LONG. Press MENU again to confirm.. When it is finished, press EXIT LONG a couple times. the radio should now reboot and start normally. you should now have a later version of the bootloader. Try connecting the radio to the PC again..
Just insert the USB cable and turn the radio ON.. The display will say "connecting" but the drives should appear on the computer screen..

Good luck

I've tried both ways, Powering on then plugging in USB and Plugged in USB Before powering on... I get the same results, "Cannot Find Drivers" and "Connecting...." messages.

When I do this the Transmitter just powers on as normal. It does not go into "Maintenance Mode"

Ok.... after several attempts, I was able to get into the Maintenance menu (was just being finicky I guess) and update the bootloader to v1.7.

I connect the TX via USB and Turn on, open eepSkye that I got from the er9x website and I try to "Read Memory from TX" and "Read Firmware from TX" and both options crash the program.

Still no Drive folders appearing and still getting USB Device Not Recognized Errors

What happens when you connect the radio to the computer, then turn the radio ON while holding the trainer switch ON?

You should see USB written on the screen. And if you go to "Device Manager" in windows, you should see a device called "Bossa Program" or something similar in COM Ports..

I do not get USB on the screen... just "Connecting..."

When I look in my Device Manager, it shows 2 Bluetooth Devices that are not loading... is there a setting in the FW that I need to adjust so the system will display the TX as a Storage Device and not a Bluetooth device?

Insert the USB cable in the radio and connect to the computer with the radio turned OFF.

Ahh... Trainer Switch... Ok, did that, getting USB on the TX screen but PC still can't install the Driver Software and Device Manager is still showing "Unknown Device" under "Other Devices"

I also made sure it's a USB 2.0 port

Ok... here's what worked:
My Windows 7 Pro 64bit computer would not install drivers for the TX and the eepSkye program still crashed.

I was able to get the program to work with my Netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and the following steps:
1. I updated my FW on my TX to the ersky9xProvR219x3.zip located here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4676
2. I re-installed the eepskye program (r419) located here: http://www.er9x.com/
3. I opened eepSkye.exe and it said there was an update 9ersky9x_rom.bin which I let the program download
4. I downloaded it and I plugged in the USB to the computer and TX then powered on the TX in Bootloader Mode (holding trim switches IN toward center)
5. The 2 Removable Drive Folders appeared
6. eepSkye was able to read Memory from TX and load my model data

My 64bit system will not work at all.

So, at least now you know that the radio IS NOT the problem.. You might have some driver problems on that machine, or some kind of permissions problem, and unfortunately I have no idea how to help you with that :(
I do apologize..

It looks as though you have, at some time in the past, had something loaded that is a bluetooth device, but using the same USB IDs as the radio. Windows then gets confused as it tries to load bluetooth drivers for a device that says it is a mass storage device.
I think you need to find a way to uninstall these bluetooth drivers.
Possibly, connect up the radio so the bluetooth devices appear in device manager, then use the properties of them an uninstall the drivers for them.

Thanks for the help fellas.
Yeah, I'll have to keep fiddling with it on my 64bit system, but at least for now it's working on the 32bit and I can finally play around with it.
