9XR-Pro settings for Naze32/Flip32

Post by humblehacker »

Hello All-
I'm looking for suggestions about configuring a 9Xr-Pro for use with a Flip32+(Naze32 clone) over Cleanflight. At present I am using an OrangeRX RX/TX in CPPM mode though I plan to move on to OpenLRSng once I get over the learning curve.
I've read some sources that say 9Xr Mixes should be set to 80% for example while others suggest 120%. So before I get into specific issues I'm having, I wanted to see if anyone could suggest specific configurations or even better, a template!

My setup is as follows-

FC= Flip32+
ESC= 4x 18AMP HURC
Motors=4x EMAX 1300kv Outrunners (EF2805)
RX= OrangeRX R615x (CPPM Mode)
TX= OrangeRX Switchable DSM2/x Module
Radio= Turnigy 9xr-Pro (erSKY9xr firmware)
Battery= DBYPower 2200mah 30C
Extras= UBLOX Neo-6M GPS, Bluetooth, OLED Screen, Pitch Servo
Firmware= Cleanflight

I can't answer specifically but I can tell you the principles. Most mainstream transmitters including Spektrum define the range of signal output from -100% to 100% as 1.1 to 1.9 ms. Many models and flight controllers are designed around this standard. Transmitters like the 9XR Pro and Taranis that use open source firmware (ErSky9x or OpenTX), however, define +/- 100% as 1.0 to 2.0 ms. Consequently, with them, to provide the expected input to a typical FC you need to set limits to 80℅.

On the other hand, if your FC calls for setting a typical transmitter such as Spektrum to 125% you would leave limits on your Pro at 100%.

Someone else can comment on how this applies to the specific FC.

Thank you for the explanation! I can't picture myself figuring that out on my own accord... Just to be sure, which menu settings should I be editing exactly? Should I be changing the WEIGHT percentage to 80% in the MIXER menu or the High/Low Limits in the LIMITS menu? Or is there a less obvious menu for setting the range?

You can adjust either weight or limits and get the same basic result. However, good practice is to leave the weight at 100 and set limits to 80. This makes a difference in some more advanced programming situations.

One more point, any time the instructions say to bring throttle trim all the way down and set the throttle stick to the bottom, the equivalent in open source firmware programming is just to leave the lower limit of the throttle channel at -100.

Thank you again!

The following captures show my stick values for Low, Mid and Full Throttle at 80% Can you tell me if they look OK? If so, should I do the same for Ail, Elev, Roll channels?

Not sure what you are looking for. Simply set each channel to -80 and 80 as the limits. The exception may be throttle, where you may need to leavd the lower limit at -100 to ensure correct initialization of the ESC.

The expected output values (with trims centered) would be approximately 1100, 1500, 1900 (1.1, 1.5, 1.9 ms) as sticks are moved.

The only surprise is that your high throttle shows 1989 or nearly 2.0 ms. You might want to repeat control calibration.

EDIT: misreading on my part. When I expanded the image I saw it was not an 8 but a 0 with slash.

I'll be happy to discuss further if you have questions.

High throttle is 1909, not 1989, so looks to be OK.

Cleanflight wants 1000-2000 range so you should not touch the limits, or only to get as close as possible to that. The defaults are normally fine.

Wait... So are you saying I shouldn't change the limits to 80% and to just leave it alone? Or to change the Mix levels to 80% instead of the limits?

If CleanFlight wants 1000 to 2000 that's very close to the 988 to 2012 provided by the firmware at 100%. So no, don't use 80% limits in this case. It's all a matter of finding out what is required by your specific equipment. Many other models or FCs require the Spektrum standard 1100 to 1900 and that's where 80% comes in that I explained above.

Changing Mix Weight and changing Limits have the same basic effect, so leave both at 100%.
