Voice files for 9XR-PRO with ersky9x

Post by jhsa »

Voice pack for Ersky9x can now be downloaded from here:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7715

Older packs were removed because the voices are no longer available and cannot be updated.

Voice files for using with the new test versions from 6th July on. Files now can use names instead of numbers, but we still keep the numbers as well because the transition is still not completely finished. Please notice that there are 3 folders inside the voice folder now. Named files can have a maximum of 8 characters. This is important.

"System" - It's where all the system files will go. these files CANNOT be modified.
"User" - This is where all your non system files will go. Files like "FlapsUp" or "GearUp" will go in this folder.. I have many already there.. All from my other pack.
"modelNames" - I think I don't need to explain this one ;) Just make sure you don't exceed 8 characters on the names.. I left my model names in the folder so you can look at them as examples.. Of course, you must make your own :)

IMPORTANT: This pack will be always updated as the voice handling continues to be improved by Mike. So, by using this, make sure that you are aware that you might have to update the pack quite often. Not a big deal, right? :D

I think that is all, questions are welcome. Enjoy

Hi frenchy13.

You could look at this thread. I am generating language files there. I did french, but as I do not speak it, the translation is likely to be rough/incomplete.

Posted a pack that I made using the English voice from Google Translate.. Please read the first post carefully.
I decided to do a pack using this voice because everyone has access to it and it is excellent, and the best of all, free. Using the "Audacity" audio editor you can play the google translate text into it while recording the System sound internally.. All the basic files are done, so, you won't need to spend hours doing them as I did ;)

Okay... my buddies are picking on me cuz my "Taranis wannabe" doesn't have Amber's dulcet tones emanating from the speaker; do we have a port of the Taranis sound pack for the Pro, or a package of Amber voice segments with the 9XR Pro file structure, or however that works?

I'm trying the Google voice packs now.

Get the sound list file that is supplied with the PRO voice files, then rename/renumber the taranis pack accordingly. If you need to make some files, use the "openTX speaker" tool.

I figured you might say that...

I'm a bit busy with hardware mods right now; trying to fix the pitiful speaker in this thing so the voice is halfway clear. Looks like I'm gonna have to do some serious building inside the TX case to get a decent soundbox. That bleeping Futaba Trainer port wastes a lot of space; if that stupid PCB weren't so danged unnecessarily long, I'd have another 20mm room to work with. Then I could just hack a pill bottle in there for a resonator.

I'm gonna try and find a better way than Dremeling half the Trainer Port bracket away...

For the speaker, on my test pro, I discarded the complete original speaker assembly, and bought a square/oval speaker. I think it measures 40mm x 20mm. I can take a picture and measure a spare that I have here if you want. Can also post a picture. That's the first mod.. the other is a bit more difficult and increases thw gain of the amplifier. But we have to replace a very very tiny smd resistor on the main board. The resistor is placed between the audio amp chip and 2 capacitors of the same size, and that makes it difficult to work on. These are all recommendations that we testers passed to HK. Ahh, my oval speaker is hot glued to the front of the radio. I opened a few more holes for the sound to come out.

For the audio files, I'm not quite sure what you mean. You mean how did I record the google translate voice?

I don't know exactly how the speaker in the pro is mounted, but general electronics manufacturers do not seem to understand that it is absolutely vital to have a tight seal around the edges of a small speaker. The air in front of the speaker must not be in contact with the air behind the speaker or the effect of the speaker is reduced significantly.
Some hot glue or silicone around the edge can work wonders in many cases. It certainly did in my Taranis.

You can use the OpenTX applications OpenTX Speaker or OpenTX Recorder to generate or record voice files. The files have a sound format that suits OpenTX, but should work for ersky9x as well.

Alternatively you can use the Audacity application to record and convert voice files to the proper format. In this case you must spend some time on setting up and understanding Audacity.

Well, no... I spent quite some time back in the day messing around with TTS; every voice uses a "Template" file (actually several in most cases) that is modulated to build words out of phonemes. I assumed João used a voice template and probably the TTS program in some variant of LINUX or some TTS program in Windoze; doesn't matter. Still the same process.

João, what did you use with Google Translate to make the files? Do they have some downloadable API I'm unaware of? (I know they did years ago; but I thought that had been long ago abandoned) How did you select a female British English accented voice instead of the default female American English accented voice that comes up when I use Google Translate online?

Also -

I've finished my speaker mod; using a 40mm round pancake speaker. It's a LOT better; I'll post pics; it's pretty easy. Just requires one to be brave and do a little cutting to remove that stupid reinforcement ridge right in the middle of the speaker area. Could you post pics of the gain mod? Is it based on the example circuit in the TA701 documentation?

Right now I'm looking for a slightly better quality speaker; mine is only rated to 250mw and it crackles a little at full volume. The problem is that unlike the Taranis, there is NO space to speak of behind the speaker, so very little room to make a megaphone chamber in front, and zero room for a resonating chamber behind.

This is what I was talking about when I was grousing about the poor design of the Trainer Port bracket; it is horribly wasteful of space. I'm thinking they designed around an existing off-the-shelf part; the only reason I can think of for that Futaba port being 3x as long as it needs to be in this application.

Thanks,

mnem

well, my default was British English I suppose..

As I said before, you will have to set an audio recording program like "Audacity" to record the internal system sound from your computer. so, the program will record whatever is playing on the speakers.. That's how I did it.. Then, write the text, hit record on the audio program, and then hit the button on google translate so it speaks..
I use only online TTS engines to make my files as they are free. Like the one from Acapela demo..

Sorry; you replied while I was editing my post to add questions. Please refresh and see new questions in above post.

Okay... maybe I'll have to try a different approach with Google Translate. I don't see any way to choose a speaking voice on the online app; maybe come at it from a portal based in the UK.

Thanks,

About the resistor mod.. Check that R36 is 47K. If it is you don't need to change the resistor for more volume as it is already done. Please look here to find R36. Bottom right, just under the audio amp chip.

Attached are a couple pics from the speakers some of us are using. As you can see it fits really good.. :)

Bought mine from here:

And a couple from china I think.. But the link doesn't work anymore.. It was on ebay.

What are the speaker dimensions, I have run a search on ebay and I found one that is 20.5mm x 40.2 x 8.8mm. from a seller in the US but postage to Oz is a bit steep. If this size will fit I will search locally to see what I can find.

This one looks like it and it says it is 8 ohm which is important. But maybe you can get it cheaper in china. Try ebay.com.
I was going to post the link to where I bought mine from but the listing doesn't exist anymore. Make sure you buy a couple just in case. China you know!!!! ;) :)

The stock speaker IS good quality ... it is the same speaker I provided with the Sky9x boards.
The way it was mounted ..back from the baffle is the problem.
Moving the speaker forward and using hot glue or Silicone to create a seal and hold it in place
will improve the output quality.
Also open up a few of the quasi speaker holes, to let let more sound out.

The rectangular speaker does fit in the space very nicely eg Digikey # 668-1361-ND

They make a "enclosed speaker" which might work as well (not tried)

The question is how do you put a round speaker to the front of the radio? I don't think it is possible as half of the speaker would not be in front of the holes, if you know what I mean. The rectangular speaker is a nearly perfect fit.

I think I can handle it... this is an 0603 size LED I made up as an indicator for my Bluetooth mod. You can see the wires for it in the speaker mod below.

As for the oval speaker; that's just evidence that sick minds... err, great minds think alike.

Image

My original mod was to build a sealed soundbox. I cut a 15mm strip of plastic from a Drink Mix box like so.

Image

Then I trimmed it to fit against the upper bulkhead of the TX and cut a notch out for the back of the [READY!] LED indicator, then committed Hot Glue Abuse to seal it all in place. Note that I cut out the brace on the upper bulkhead as well.

Image

Next I fitted my 40mm replacement speaker; one can use the original 36mm speaker the same way.

Image

A little reality check to make sure it will actually fit under the Trainer Port bracketry...

Image

And more hot glue abuse to seal it in place. I tried it with both speakers sealed up this way; the stock speaker is about twice as loud and much clearer than before. The 40mm 8Ω 0.25W speaker is a little louder, and the overall tone is better operating without a resonating chamber so I went with it. But for ZERO DOLLARS out of pocket, just doing this mod with the stock speaker is a HUGE improvement.

Image

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321307353026

Volume is now about 2.5x that of the stock arrangement. However, both speakers still sound "tinny"; this is a fact of life with Mylar speakers. I want better tonal quality, so next I'm going to try a 40mm x 28mm 4Ω speaker from this auction.

I expect to be able to build a small resonating chamber around it thanks to being able to set it lower inside the space; that should help greatly with overall sound quality.

I know the TA701 audio amp IC isn't rated for a 4Ω load; probably because it's already operating in BTL mode. But we already load it to 4Ω any time we plug in a set of 8Ω headphones (the design of the headphone jack parallels the load of both speakers) and I've used it that way on a couple sessions already with no discernible ill effects; so I'll be our guinea pig on the 4Ω speaker question. I think worst case scenario, if I just drop a 2.2Ω resistor in series we'll be more than okay; I've built a LOT of 6Ω speakers to go on 8Ω-rated amplifiers to get "just a little more" out of the setup.

Cheers! :P
