Sorry, I've been a bit busy. Are you measuring between J3-2 and J3-9 with the connector unplugged?
Try removing R22 completely and see if the radio powers up OK.
Have you removed ALL the mods you did, including the connections to the expansion connector?

Taranis Plus is a good choice and you can flash it to run with erSky9x.
I use erSky9x on my x9d.
You may want the M9 Gimbals too, as I find them a must upgrade.
For about $80 more there is the (comes with M9 Gimbals)
FrSky Taranis Limited Black Special Editions: (https://alofthobbies.com/taranis-x9d-black.html).

R22 removed no change

1.661 volts between J3-9 and J3-2

I'm still getting a blank blue screen and nothing else... I am also noticing quite a bit of heat around C79

I notice some flux residue around R22, and some small bits of what looks like solder on the expansion connector. If you have some cellulose thinners (or nail varnish remover!), it is worth using a "cotton bud" (possibly known as a Qtip), soaking this in the thinners and using it to clean the board.
There looks to be something that might be a short on the processor pins 23 and 22 (bottom row right end).

Have you tried connecting the USB to your computer, holding the "trainer" switch (spring loaded switch) on, then powering on? This should start the radio in the SAM-BA boot mode that runs from internal processor ROM. Your computer should detect a USB device. This is a test to see if the processor is running using very little hardware on the board.

I just tried connecting to my PC holding the trainer switch while powering on the radio. The PC beeps and a dialog box pops up saying it needs to install drivers then gets hung up there. If I just plug in the radio to the usb port and turn on the radio I get the RADIO Board, but no t the SD card to load.

It looks like the processor is running then, the PC asking for drivers for "SAM-BA" mode is normal.
Please confirm by "RADIO board" you mean the firmware and EEPROM drive appears but the SD card does not appear as a drive.

For the display, I suggest checking each of the LCD signals on the expansion is not shorted to either 3.3V or GND. These are d0 to D7, RD A0, and R.

Yes, Radio Board I mean the firmware and EEPROM drive appears and the SD Card does not appear as a drive.

Display signals are not shorted to 3.3V or ground on pads D0, D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, RD, A0, and R. My multimeter reads OL to all the previous tests for continuity between both GRND and 3.3V to all pads mentioned.

when I plug the Transmitter up to my computer without holding down any of the switches or buttons, the computer only shows the Drive Ersky_9x (H): with Firmware and ERSKY9X as file inside said drive. Removable Drive (G): won't mount the SD Card. when I try to open it I get an error message saying to put a sd card into the drive, but the sd card is locked in all the way into the card holder on the transmitter. If I pull the card out and put it into my phone, or tablet, I can then read all of the directory and files through either device or when device is connected to my pc I can then view the card on my pc.

When you have the bootloader running with the USB plugged, and have drive H: on the PC, does the processor get hot still?

I think you may have a short somewhere. Do you have a magnifying glass so you can examine the whole board, both sides, to see if there is a solder splash anywhere? Sometimes such a short is very difficult to see.

Well I gave up in this project... I can't find the short and since the radio is now extinct I decided to go with a taranis x9d plus.

Hi slimvulcanrider,
You can flash erSky9x to your new Taranis x9d plus (http://www.er9x.com/)
and here is some info where to fine what is needed for the SD card:
erSky9x Directory List (layout) for Micro SD Card
(https://openrcforums.com/forum/viewtopi ... 34#p116984).

Some more info here: (https://openrcforums.com/forum/viewtopi ... 10#p141744).

Also here is some more info about erSky9x on Taranis:

I can confirm that - didn't run more than one boot up on OpenTX but went straight to erSky9X with my new X9D+. The one boot up I did do to OpenTX I couldn't navigate around like I do with erSky9x so it was a no brainer for me. Also handy that all my models are imported too so just re-binding to do :)

No problems once I'd got the SD card formatted correctly anyway! Once I'd re-formatted the card and copied the files back over from the 9XR card it was plain sailing :)

Do you mean capacity of the sdcard?
I had a spare 8gb so used that formatted to fat32.
