I am back... and having problems after I have added three 3 position switches. I am going to label them as "SW1", "SW2", "SW3", and "SW4".

Turnigy 9XR PRO V1.10

Wiring Schematics

Sw1:

Middle pin-Spare ANG
outside pins- bridged with a 1K Ohm Resister with ground on one terminal

Sw2:
Top Pin- "J3-7" (blue wire from Elevator Switch)
Middle Pin- Ground
Bottom Pin- "J3-6"(Green Wire from RUD)

SW3:

Unused at the moment

SW4:
Top Pin- "J2-5" (Blue Wire from AIL)
Middle Pin- Ground
Bottom Pin- J2-2 (Spare Dig)

***All Grounds tie into J3-1

on the software side I am running ErSky9x V222c7

when I enter the hardware menu
I set ELE - ANA
THR- None
Rud - Ele
AIL - DAC1
Gear - None

I cant get the switches to show they are doing any thing...on the main screen, Thr has a black box around it, RU, EL and AI all have "-" next to them. Gear, Trn, and original 3 way switch work as they should. so my question is what did I do wrong. secondly I cant find a menu to change the switches to actual 3 position switches.

now onto another topic... As Mike and Joao suggested i am going to set up the original 2 position switches as pb 1-4 the question is... do the resistors have to be 4k7? just wondering because my local supplier doesn't have any so I have to order them.

thanks guys for your help thus far

I followed this videos:
https://youtu.be/w6aEq6qAXLs
https://youtu.be/Qwi01ZlkJOc

My hardware settings in the menu same as yours.
Did you soldered the r22 ?

I did the mod in my newest 9XR Pro and the resistor was fitted already, but my another 2 are probably older
( I bought them second hand) and those have no fitted that resistor.
From outside the visible difference between the new and two old radios the speaker grills. On the new all holes used and see the speaker. On the another two just few holes used and they just partly opened.

I think I have a resister on r22... I say think because I was looking at the resister last night and it looks like i might have accidentally touched my soldering iron down. I fallowed the same videos to do the hardware hacks...

are my software settings correct?

Wiring and settings look OK. Let's take the switches one at a time.
Your SW1 is replacing the ELE switch using the ANA input. Please go to the "DiagAna" menu (LONG LEFT then UP then MENU). Look at the value for A9 on the right. It should be stable, and show three clearly different values as you change the switch. If it is unstable, and/or doesn't change significantly when you change the switch, check you do have R22 in place (or a wire across where R22 goes).

Just spotted you have "***All Grounds tie into J3-1". J3-1 is analog 3.3V, not GND. You need to use J3-9 for ground.

oops, my bad Mike... I do have the switch grounds running to J3-9... the upper most pin on the left hand (right hand if facing from bottom)...

when I flip SW1, middle (off) I get 81, then flip switch either up or down and I get 82... going to try and bridge R22 and see what that does.

so bridged R22 and now get three different numbers for SW1 on the diagANA screen position A9.... still cant tell if the rest of the switches are doing anything or not

What are the three numbers?
Go to the "DiagSwtch" menu. Beside ID^ you should see '^', '-' and 'v' (up arrow, - and down arrow) as you change the switch.
You should also see the same arrows beside ELE you should see the same arrows, and they should change as you switch your SW1.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you on this Mike... My radio crashed and I took it all back a part to tidy every thing up. In the process of putting every thing back into the case.

Right before my radio crashed... I was getting some really weird numbers... SW1 ^ I was getting 72, - was 82, and v was 90 something, but when ever I flipped another switch (didn't matter Wich one) all values on SW1 went to 82. I never saw Ele switch position change on the main screen.

That seems to be a very old version of the firmware.. Ersky9x doesn't use "SW1" to name logical switch 1 since a few years :) It is "L1" now..
Perhaps it would be better if you update the firmware and bootloader on the radio.. :)

No João, it is his SW1 that he is adding we are talking about, not a logical switch.

Those values of 72, 82 and 90 something are not those I would expect.
Please try disconnecting the signal from the swith that goes to the "spare analog" input, then see what value you have on the diagana screen. it should be about 0400.

Of course Mike, I do apologize, I thought we were in another thread. This "SW1" thing always confused me anyway..
I should have re-read the posts above the one I answered.. :(

Sorry abiout that.. :(

So I got all the guts back into the radio, turned it on and all I get is a dim blue backlight on the screen and the blue power led... After a few seconds the haptic starts buzzing and the screen turns off but the led status on... The processer gets very hot in a matter of a few minutes... I have no clue what's going on... Scared to plug the battery in any more.

P.s. I unhooked SW1 sensing wire with out any change. I can use a MM just not sure what i need to test. Also going back to stock has no change in the current blue screen and overheating.

If.the processor gets hot you might have something shorted and it is taking too much current from the processor's pins.
Or... measure the 3.3V rail. If a regulator fails and let the input voltage pass to the output it could warm things up.

What is the worst that could happen if I plugged the transmitter into my computer to make sure that my settings are correct on the software side? I'm scared to turn the transmitter on right now to test voltages since the screen backlight turns off on its own (not sure if the screen itself is turning off our not since I can't see any readings... The welcome to ersky9x doesn't sound when I turn on the transmitter, nor do the switch warnings on startup...

I have checked everything I have done... I don't see a short any where... I tested for shorts to ground with my multimeter. I have 0.00 ohms of resistance on the 3 volt rail to ground. Where this is coming from I have no clue. I have 2.4kΩ on R22. Battery connector is OL (power switch off) , and power switch on is flashing 1.65kΩ and OL. Where else do I test for shorts...

I take it that you have measured the resistance with the power turned off?
:)
Sorry about the stupid question but at this point there aren't any stupid questions.. All matters and we can't see what you have in front of you, and can't take our own measurements.. :)

Yes all measurements were taken with batteries disconnected and power off... Even turning on the main radio on to test for back feeding to the main battery connection was taken with the battery disconnected.

Please check your switch installation again. See if you shorted the 3.3V to ground in there.. Please disconnect the mods you've done and measure the resistance on the 3.3V line again..

All mods disconnected, all switches disconnected i still get 0.00Ω between 3.3v and ground and if you're saying between pin 2 and r22 that is 2.2Ω or 0.00Ω depending on Wich side of the resistor I measure.

I noticed that the ground wire for the switches got real hot and melted the insulation in a few spots... But I all switches are OL when off or 0.00Ω when on (except for the 3 pos switch that has the 1kΩ resistor it measures 1kΩ

Are sure that the wire you talking about is really ground? :o
It is difficult to help when we can't see what you've got there. Perhaps some good resolution pictures would help.

I am assuming the black wire that goes from J3-9 to all the switches is ground according to the wiring diagram

Difficult to see, but it looks to me you have a lot of solder around your R22 addition. Possibly worth removing R22 and cleaning that area of the board.
I note you have some wires soldered to the expansion connector. Since the soldering is on the "other" side of the board, I suggest removing the board and double checking there is no short on those connections.
Then, I suggest, unplug J2, J3, J4 and J5, which will disconnect all the switches, trims and pots from the main board, then power it up, briefly, and see if the display works.

Thanks Mike... I have been thinking of desoldering R22... On the expansion bus, I have my multimeter set to Ω, black lead to GRND, then red lead to the following:
3.3v - 2.29Ω
D2 - 7.88 MΩ
D6 - 7.80MΩ
D7 - 7.77MΩ
Edit: results of removing the J connectors Mike B mentioned.

With J2, J3, J4, and J5 disconnected, the blue led screen backlight turns on, I still can't see any graphics on the screen. The processor is still getting to hot to touch. After a minute or so the screen backlight turns off but the power LED stays lit.

I'm waiting for my iron to heat up so I can clean up R22.

Please inspect the processor pins with a magnifying glass and search for blobs of solder shorting its pins.
You can also make a good close picture of the processor and make it bigger on your computer screen..
I hope that it isn't the processor that is shorted. :(

You could also carfully unsolder and lift the regulator's output pin from the board and measure the board to see if there is still a short.

You need to find out what is shorted :(

What are my options here

Post by slimvulcanrider »

Lifted the 3.3v regulator, still have short between J3-2 and J3-9... No visual signs of a short on the processor.

So my options appear to me at this point in time:
1) buy a new transmitter
2) find a replacement 9xrpro to rob a main board from
3) an alternative replacement board...
