9XR-PRO Hacks and Fixes

Post by jhsa »

Here is a thread where we can discuss and share mods we do to our radio, as well as problems we may encounter and how we've fixed them.
Please keep it friendly as we are all good people
Thank you..

I have created the same also at RCG

DHT DYI mod, easy soldering?

Post by fburden »

Putting the DHT dyi in there, would that be really easy soldering, onto big soldering points(?), I would try it, but if it's that really fine soldering, forget it (for me).

My biggest problem would be to find space for it inside the radio :D

Probably for the PPM signal and power we would have to solder to the pins like we did to the 9x. But maybe Brent could give a better option?
For the telemetry I think you could just disconnect the connector (on the main board) that goes to the Futaba trainer port for the telemetry cable used with the DJT, make a cable with one servo connector on each side, and plug one end to the serial port in the DHT and the other to the main board where the other connector was.. Of course we would have to check for the right connections.
If there was a better connection for power and PPM, it would really be a piece of cake..

Not widely advertised (yet), but on the RF board in the back of the 'PRO, you will find a 3-pin connector labelled PPM2. This has power, ground and a second PPM output. This PPM output is in addition to the PPM on the main 5-pin module connector. The firmware allows you to select which channels are sent to this.
If you connect the DHT to this, then you can still use the module bay.
Alternatively, you can pick up the power and ground from this, and find the main PPM signal on the main board labelled TP18.

Mike, those are good news.. that means we could even have 16 channels sent using 2 modules, right?
Now if we found a way of switching the power to one module off by software, it would be the icing on top of the cake..
But anyway, if using the PPM 2 connector we don't need any soldering to the boards to install a DHT in the radio.. As I said, the biggest problem is really finding space for the module inside the radio :(

Space for the DHT in the battery bay?

Post by fburden »

I've noticed that when using a smaller form factor battery, I have lots of spare space in the battery bay.
(I have a 2 cell Trustfire Lion.)

With a little hack to the battery bay, and with a smaller battery, would that be an option?

******************************************************************************************************************
Side point: since the DHT is the least expensive of the Frsky Tx's. You could get the total cost, with Rx, down to around $140.
That would be beneficial for some guys...

Confirmation needed: João, are you saying, NO SOLDERING NEEDED???!!!

if doing as Mike say and use the PPM 2, there is a connector. of course you need to solder a connector to the module wires.. and then make a cable to connect the serial port from the RF module (for telemetry) to the pins where COM 2 ( I think ) is.. A servo connector will do I think.. Not sure which connector on PPM 2 though.

João

EDIT: What would we do with the antenna? we can't use the internal antenna. maybe reemove the plastic protection of the frsky antenna and place it in the handle? removing the original, of course? that would prevent using some module that would use the internal antenna..

Connections to the PPM2 connector are:
1. PPM2
2. Power
3. Gnd

Pin 1 is denoted by a square solder pad on the board, and is at the bottom (closest to the main board).

SkyNorth is sorting a wiring diagram to help with all this.

On the model setup menu, you have options for PPM2 to set the start channel number and the number of channels. At present, the frame length and short pulse length are the same as the main PPM, but I've just realised that since I have the EEPROM set up to allow for the Taranis external module I could use these parameters to allow better control of PPM2.

16 Channel Radio for $140 !!!!

Post by fburden »

João,
Alternatively, put two DHT's together in the module bay.

Now, you have a 16 channel radio for only $140.

Wow!

The DHT is really just a DJT with heatshrink rather than a case and some wiring/remote switches/LED. Fitting one inside a 9XR defeated me more than a year ago. I managed to get one into the module bay, but with its aerial, ppm/power,bind/led, and in my case telemetry, connections it was a tight squeeze.

The DHT aerial is connected using the same type of plug as is used on D series FRSKY receivers so I removed the standard aerial and replaced it with a receiver aerial extension (sold by FRSKY as a spare part) situated in the handle. I couldn't find a place for the 3 way switch so I left it off. The LED/Bind button is in the speaker grill because I like to be able to see the led.

So if I have a DHT-U that has the 3 wires with separate connectors, I should be able to easily hook that up?

DHT-U? That is the one with a display, right? That one has it's own telemetry display and it's not possible to display the telemetry on the pro. The only connections are PPM, +V and Ground.

We are talking about the DHT which is a diy module that we want to install inside the tx and can access it's serial ports to display the telemetry on the pro's display..

I have both DHT and DHT-U (lcd and module in one). I'd try the DHT and put the telemetry through the PRO display, but really don't want to solder anything (eyes and steady hand).

For the DHT as we were saying before You might just have to solder a couple connectors if you use PPM2..
I think finding a place for the module inside the tx and placing the antenna in the handle might be the most difficult ;)

The SD card included in the current release of the 9XR Pro includes voice files which do not match the firmware. Until the present stock of 9XR Pro's is all sold the file included on the link below will need to be be installed on the SD card which comes with the radio.

This are my next mods too (when the parts arrive ... ) :

Replace one ot the pots by a Taranis slider and mount this somehow to left side of TX
and then fit the encoder to the remaining hole of the obsolete pot.

If the Taranis slider doesn't fit well I will take a try with a linear slider (fader) pot.

the problem of doing that is that you would end up with a big circular hole..

I also got a couple taranis sliders.. I think I will start today as the weather is bad here and I can't fly..

Hi,

Just wondering if any of you guys could help me with a telemetry issue, which just wont work.

So i bought a jr servo to futaba wire with the 9xr pro, because the stock wire is back ordered for a while already. I soldered the connections just like on the wiring diagram from the 9xr-pro hk files-tab. I've quadruple checked, but still can't get anything. I've also changed the com channel to 2, but won't help.

Please, any ideas on what to do?

Here's pics on my connections:

Yeah the problem got fixed by the time this message was approved. So sorry to cause you work.

I got it to work by flipping the connector on the module side. Just some random soldering by HK.

Taranis slider meets 9XR-pro

jhsa wrote:the problem of doing that is that you would end up with a big circular hole..,
(Very) short explanation: (The pictures speak better than me I think :) )
  • Taranis slider was a bit bulky for complete implementation :o . So I decided to use only parts of it.
  • Removed the pot from the carrier and fitted it the usual way (with a nut out of my spare parts box).
  • Then I sawed off the "ring" of the carrier with a jigsaw for later use.
  • Two M2 screws are used to stop the slider at the electrical endpoints.
Unfortunately the holes are not drilled exactly :( . Therefore I bent 'em a little  .
(May look better with carbon rods, but you can't bend 'em)
Not worth a beauty contest  but close-fitting and functional ...

Here now the pics:
IMG_1844 (Groß).JPG
IMG_1845 (Groß).JPG
above you can see the usage of the sawed off "ring" (it hides the nut)
IMG_1847 (Groß).JPG
I use the TX in tray style, mode 2 (thats why the slider is on the left side of TX) , therefore the slider pin is mounted upright.
But the other way around also should be no problem...

This slider replaces the pitch trim pot, which I removed to fit a rotary encoder.
But that's another construction site ...

Mike, Brent -

I have finally had a chance to get into my new 9XR Pro... as expected, a few issues that needed to be resolved, like the same old power plug too close to the battery cover, and the bleeping antenna rattling around loose in the handle, just like my 9XR.

There is also an issue with the multi-port, which I had to modify so that it actually unplugs straight up from the board as intended. The way it is made now, the plastic molding traps the assembly under the power jack, and blocks access to one of the screw holes underneath. In the case of my TX, they omitted said screw in manufacture. I do not feel that 3 screws is adequate to retain the mainboard properly; the [EXIT] button is not firm as a result.
9XR Pro Multi-Port Housing Mod
9XR Pro Multi-Port Housing Mod
However... the BIG thing... is the LCD. This TX appears to use the same poor transmissivity, poor contrast LCD as the original 9X... it is HORRIBLE in comparison to the 9XR; side by side, even with the Brightness on the Pro at 100%, and Contrast adjusted to Optimal readablility, the 9XR is easily twice as bright and crisp.

I've taken the mainboard out, and the LCD has the same BLEEPING BLEEPITY BLEEP! semi-opaque silvery backing as my 9X LCDs. Is there ANY WAY to mod the 9XR LCD into this TX?

I have to say... I've gotten used to the gorgeous clarity of the 9XR LCD, and it's a deal-breaker for me. I'll sell this thing and never look back if I have to put up with this LCD.

Please tell me there's a way to fix this... I really want to like this TX, but every time I look at that display I feel like I've gone back to my 9x.

Commiserations. I did not have either of these problems with my prototype 9XR Pro but a few others which were fixed for production.
You are right about the low brightness of the production) 9XR Pro LCD screen. My prototype 9XR Pro LCD, probably a regular production 9XR screen, is brighter and much better legibility at the same brightness setting in the firmware (100). The Pro screen is very blue compared to the 9XR as you say.
I looked for a spare LCD screen in the HK Parts & Accessories listing but there isn't one available.
I am one who missed this when I inspected the production 9XR Pro. I offer my apology.

The problem for me is I don't have one of these screens to look at. We were sent what were, I believe, production 9XRs that had a new main board.
If HK have changed the LCD for production, we need to see one of them.
But it does mean that the LCD from a 9XR should be able to swap with the one in the 'PRO. This would be useful to make sure it is the LCD and not something happening with the 'PRO firmware.

I'll investigate what I can.
