Protocol PPM ????

Post by Coolthing »

Can someone give me some clue about the PROTOCOL menu meaning EXTERNAL / INTERNAL ? :?:
How and what to choose for ?
I had to activate it to work with my FrSky V8R7SP receiver if I want to use it in PPM mode.

All 9x and 9XR-PRO radios with Ersky9x installed can have an RF module installed internally. This is the INTERNAL option.
If you didn't install a module internally, and use the normal RF module bay on the back of the radio, use the EXTERNAL option..

When you program a new model, you have to activate the correct option for the radio to start sending a signal to the correct module. :)

I wish to install a second (internal) module; where I can wire it ? I can see an encoder connector on the main board ? and what about the power connection ? will it be switched by the internal/external menu ?

Thanks Joao to help me

What firmware do you have installed? Ersky9x?
I think only Ersky9x supports the internal module. Please note that the PRO has very little space inside the case. If you don't mind telling us, what module do you want to install inside the radio. I still haven't done it to my PRO, that's why I am asking :)

have a look for the Encoder:

For telemetry connection use COM2, shown on the first picture.

Sorry, forgot it: Ersky9x; I want to install a Jeti box Profi on the top of the box, very easy since there is no antenna and I get telemetry on the Jeti box.
I'm confused about the purpose of the menu: internal/external ? what it does ? switching PPM signal ? or is it possible to switch power ?

well, it separates the settings from both modules, and make it easy to know what is what, and yes, it can be used to switch the power to the modules. The 9xtreme and taranis radios already have this circuitry, but for the PRO, skyboard and Ar9x boards you can build a simple circuit with an attiny45 or 85 and a couple mosfet transistors to control both modules power. The circuit detects when a signal is being received by the module and turn it ON, if you turn the module OFF in the protocol menu, the modules won't receive any signal, and the circuit will turn it OFF.

You can find the project here. I have been using it for a couple years with no issues at all.

Mike recently implemented turning the Bluetooth power on and off via software, perhaps the same principle could be applied to this? It uses less components and no programming required.. Mike?? :)

Thanks Joao; amazing to see how much work to do to replace a toggle switch...

I think the same principle I've used for the bluetooth power switching will work for module power, although it will need a longer time constant (larger value capacitor). I'll give it some thought/testing when I get some time.

Thanks Mike. my Pro still doesn't have it, so I guess I could test it. If it works it will need a smaller PCB, so good for the pro. Perhaps I could include the circuitry for the Bluetooth as well, and a spare one in case WIFI is implemented ;) :) But i guess that WIFI would make BT redundant, as it is faster, and a greater amount of data could be sent?
The downside is the Higher current consumption I guess.. :( Also, would it interfere with the module RF signal?? questions, questions :)
