FS-TH9X Module question?

I have 2 TH9X radios from Nitro Planes and have installed SmartieParts boards in both. loaded Er9x, works great. Did tutorials on YouTube and got models loaded and tested. Question is which Module and Rx should I get for best performance. My radio's have the original FS modules and are hard wired to the antenna in the case. Am I correct in assuming that if I remove the current modules, I can plug in one of the FrSky modules like XJT, DJT, DF from Hobby King that are JR compatable? If so, do I only need to change the protocol type in setup to PXX and bind to the Rx? Thanks

By the way, those Tutorials for Er9x on You Tube are Excellent!!!

The 'J' in XJT and DJT are for JR compatibility, the DFT is for Futaba.
Yes you may plug in a XJT or DJT. The DJT still uses PPM, but the XJT works best with PXX (I've renamed PXX to XJT in the latest release).

Yes, only JR type modules like the DJT or XJT

Yes, but be aware that to have telemetry you need to do the telemetry mod. Check the wiki.

If you decide to do this mod, I would choose the one using a level converter if I were you.. :)

Thanks guy's. The link to Mikes Telemetry mods doesn't appear to work, but the photo's on the wiki site show a different SmartiParts board than the one I have. I installed the 9eXtreme boards. Do I still need the same mods?

Then you do not need those mods. You should have said you have the 9xtreme as smartieparts sell more than one board for the 9x radio :) :)
When people say smartieparts and 9x we tend to think you have the other board to flash the stock 9x radio.

HK sells a kit they call "DF" with a JR module though, which commonly causes confusion.

OK. I purchased a XJT w/X8R receiver, and a DJT w/V8FR-II receiver. I cannot get either to bind. The Tx's appear to work per the instructions, But I get no led activity at all on the Rx's. Could I have missed a setup step somewhere to enable RF out? Did I miss a mod ? All of the eXtreme functions seem to work and I can transfer the eepsky files with no problem. Any ideas would be a leap forward at this point. Thanks

So, you have a 9x radio with a 9xtreme upgrade board.
Go to the "Model Setup/Protocol" menu, and make sure the external RF module is active and set to "PPM" for the DJT module and "XJT (PXX on earlier versions of Ersky9x)" for the XJT module.
If the external module's protocol is set to OFF, then the RF module will NOT be powered on.
Try to bind the receiver again.

Still nothing. Both internal and external are set to on. D16, Pxx, RxNum = 1, Ame, 1st chan = 1

PXX is only for the XJT module, the DJT needs the protocol set to PPM.

Let me ask you a question. Did you insert or remove the RF module while the radio was ON?
If you didn't, DON'T DO IT, as it can damage the 9xtreme board..

Something else, go to the main screen that shows the channel outputs as bars. To cycle through the different main screens just keep pressing up or down.
Do the bars move when you move the sticks?

No I know better than that. Yes the bars all move with the sticks and switches.

Also, the XJT has power and goes into bind mode (solid green, flashing red led's) but I can't get a response from the receivers.

Ok, but you understand I had to ask it.. there were some cases of damaged boards due to people inserting/removing modules with the radio ON.
Yes the bars all move with the sticks and switches.
That means the radio should be sending the channels to the RF module.

TomIngram1
How are you trying to bind the receiver to the module?
I don't have a XJT but I believe you should use the bind option in the protocol menu to put the module in bind mode.

I have tried it both ways. Turn on Tx while holding f/s button on module. When steady green and flashing red - hold f/s button on Rx and apply power to Rx. Should see led on Rx Flash indicating Bind.

does this also happen with the DJT and its receiver?
Is the XJT compatible with the X8R?
There is different firmware for different regions.
For example, a XJT bought in the US will not work with an X8R receiver bought in Europe..

In case you have not seen this 9Xtreme string, it maybe be a source of info: (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=7182).
Did you do the Module Bay Mod ? (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8741&p=114455#p114455).
Look at the Optional 9Xtreme Radio Mods:.
The external XJT module can be turned into a DJT module too.

Yes, it happens with both Tx/Rx sets. I bought them as bundled combo's from Hobby King. Since both are behaving the same, I began suspecting that I have done something wrong in the conversion sequence of my FS-TH9X - Smartieparts eXtreme - Er9x.

Yes I did the Module Bay Mod. It fits well and clicks in place.

Ok, we will have to check that module bay mod. Pictures?
What value resistor did you use? 100 ohm?
If all checks ok with your mod we will have to check if your 9xtreme is outputting a signal to the module. Do you have an oscilloscope?
If not, there is another way of checking it. But I will explain how to tomorrow. Very late here now, gotta sleep. :(

Mike, could you please let us know where is that version of ersky9x that checks the PPM pin on the 9xtreme board? I should have saved it to my computer :( keep forgetting :(
Thanks

With a XJT module in the back and the the protocol set to "XJT" (PXX), then selecting BIND in the menu causes the red LED on the XJT to start flashing. If this works, then the PPM/PXX pin is connecting and working correctly.

Just to review: If your XJT is in Bind mode (flashing Red LED on XJT),
then hold the bind button down on your X8R receiver and connect the 5V battery power (Bind mode 5).
After several seconds have pasted release X8R receiver's Bind Button and disconnect the 5V battery power.
Turn OFF and back ON your 9x radio and re-power (5V) your X8R receiver.
Test using a servo that you have Bind (connection between XJT and 8XR).
X8R Receiver Manual (click on picture to zoom in)
X8R Receiver Manual (click on picture to zoom in)
It is difficult to hold the X8R Bind button and connect the 5V battery power at the same time.
So if the X8R Bind button becomes released before the Bind can complete when trying with one hand
to make the 5V battery power connection, there will be no Bind.
Having some one to help (another pair of hands) is one way and because I am, most of the time alone,
I use a switch (http://alofthobbies.com/receiver-power- ... -port.html) to make the X8R receiver's
power connection, this makes the Bind process much easier to do.

There is the possibility the firmware between the XJT and the X8R are not compatible with each other.

Hi Guy's. Mike's comment about the Bind select in protocol works as he say's. The red LED flashes with a Green steady. Holding the f/s button on the Rx while connecting the Batt never results in a bind though. Also no LED flash on the Rx. If I change to the DJT module w/ V8FR-II Rx I get the same exact indications. Tx module goes into bind mode (flashing red, steady green) but no bind at the Rx.

Yes, I tried that method. This method is if you want full telemetry. Method 2 - switch 1 off, switch 2 on - is if you want NO telemetry. I tried both. No bind on either.

Well, this is getting a bit weird now.. So it looks like your XJT is receiving a signal from the radio on pin 1 (PPM Pin) of the mode bay, otherwise, according to Mike, it wouldn't enter Binding mode. But it doesn't bind. That could be explained by the module and receiver not being compatible, one with US firmware, and the other with Europe firmware, even if you bought both at the same place. Not saying this is the case, just thinking loud.
But the DJT also not bindind is very strange.
If there is a valid signal on pin number one of the module bay and power to the module, then the receiver not binding should have nothing to do with the radio :o
I think there might be more than one problem here.
Please check AGAIN that when you have the XJT inserted in the radio, PXX (XJT in new versions of ersky9x) is selected in protocol, and when you have the DJT installed in the radio, PPM is selected in protocol.

I don't know how old your 9x radio is but recent radios have a bit of plastic surrounding the pins in the module bay that could prevent the frsky modules from being fully inserted, resulting in one or more pins not being properly connected. If that is the case, it has to be removed..

Maybe you could post your radio's eeprom here, as well as a picture from the module bay.

Thanks

João

Your radio doesn't have the plastic around the pins. It looks like it was already removed..
I can't understand why it is not working.. :(
Will think about it better..
Do you have another radio you could try the modules? Maybe a friend"s radio?

Yes. I have asked to borrow it tomorrow. When doing a bind does eR9x send a data string through the Tx module to the Rx. Could I have the RF but not the data? I noticed with the pxx protocol you need to give the Rx a address or unit number. just grabbing straws here. Thanks
