Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Here is the log 2014_08_30_V2 with "//#define SMOOTH_DTE" in the second part of the log, i did not delete the first log, so both versions are in this one. Look at the timestamp. Stratos_E-2014-08-30.zip It is similar to prior versions with low resolution and "jumpy" sound, so the...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Here is the first flight with 2014_08_30_V2 (unchanged) Stratos_E-2014-08-30.zip It is a realy good one, maybe the best i ever flew. So threating you with my approach worked :-). The conditions were rather rough, one thermal spit me out, as i never experienced before. This one has to be tried in cal...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Stratos_E-2014-08-30.zip Here is the V1 log, i can confirm a reaction-time of 10s :-) To my approach: dTE is not time critical, the calculation can be done, when the data is ready to transmit, in the interval of transmitting. I did my calculations over the total energy: E = m * g * h + 1/2 m * v². ...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Thank you for the changes, i will test today. Looking over the logs, i think again about a simpler approach: The airspeed is reliable, also the vspeed. Correcting the vspeed with a moving average over the delta airspeed could do it already. Airspeed change is slow, maximum 9.81m/s² as long as you hi...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

I changed COMPENSATIONMILLIS 500 to COMPENSATIONMILLIS 100 to see what happens, and the effect was a very noisy dTE. Here i magnified 15 sec. of the log with TEK and with dTE, and you can see, that the airspeed is calm, vspeed is calm, dTE is jumping. P1_TEK.png P2_dTE.png What you see, when you loo...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Hello Michel, the oscilations are plane specific. I tried moving cg back, far behind recommended place, until i nearly lost the plane. Changed also angle of attack, but the oscillations did not reduce. The performance is really good, so i accepted it. The main problem for me is not a noisy dTE, but ...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Hello Michel, here is my afterworkflight with 2014_08_27V1: Stratos_E-2014-08-28.zip I decided to land after a few minutes to record the vario-sound, because it is difficult to describe. The dte sound has a worse resolition, the TEK sound is more sliding. Here is a 4 min excerpt with some switching ...

Re: New beta version of openXsensor (=openXvario)

Hello Michel, thank you for this one, here is a logfile with a flight from this afternoon with a lot of thermals (surprisingly), i used the version from yesterday, you sent me with pm. The vario compensation with airspeed works, but the resulution is worse then the TEK with great jumps. Centering th...

Re: TEK Probe and pressure connection

Yes, you use a V-tail glider with airscrew. In that case you positioned TEK-probe close to airscrew as possible. Try it with a little bit longer brass tube. Beware of fuselage and wing flow field especially in case of high angle of attack respectively in case of low speed in thermals. The length is...

Re: Open source speed sensor?

Yes, in openxsensor.ino you defined it. I dont know, if the code allows to change it on the fly. Also only the starting sensor is zeroed, so it possibly does not make sense, you wuld switch the altitude sensor too. #ifdef VARIO #ifdef DEBUG OXS_MS5611 oxs_MS5611(I2CAdd - 1,Serial); #else OXS_MS5611 ...

Re: Open source speed sensor?

Meanwhile i changed the sensor-IDs in the arduino sketch and mounted a TEK-Probe to fly with dTE. The result was not as expected, when i flew loops and downturns. Only for a short period i noticed the influence of the TEK, then the vario behaved as usual. After the landing i checked the sensor: the ...

Hi Michael,
the weatherforecast was right, so here is a flight with a speed-probe on a second MS5611, logged as T1. GPS was on board for
comparison purposes.

Re: Open source speed sensor?

Hi Michael, i can do that, when the weather will be better, maybe thursday (only 50% rain forecast, tomorrow 90%). Nevertheless it would be more fun to see (hear) the calculated airspeed. Maybe you find time to add the airspeed-calculation ( i thought in my rashness, this is peanuts, against adding ...

Re: Open source speed sensor?

@ mstrens: To stay on topic :-) i will start with a pitot tube (and speed-probe sounds sexier than TEK). In opentx there is an "airspeed" telemetrie field, can openxsensor adress this field? To calculate the airspeed you subtract Alt (Vario) from Alt (pitot) = delta Alt. Speed ist then sqr...

Re: Open source speed sensor?

That would be perfect! So i can try both variants: 1. TEK probe, have dTE, measure 2 altitudes (pressures), calculate speed 2. Pressure probe (pitot), measure 2 altitudes (pressures), calculate speed and dTE When the weather permits, i can make some tests this week (vacation), logging also gps, to h...

Re: Open source speed sensor?

Hi Michael - that was fast! - if the two ms5611 drift in the same direction - the fault will compensate. mounting them together (same temperature) will help - i "stole" an idea, sticking an preformed heatschrink tube on one side to the sensor, on the other side to the tube. So the small bo...

Re: Open source speed sensor?

Both ms5611 have to be resetted before flight - then you have one ms5611 to calculathe the altitude as usual and the second one to measure the dynamic pressure to calculate the speed.

Re: Open source speed sensor?

In openxsensor we have routines for measuring altitude with 0,1 m resolution. Why not use this routines with a second ms5611 sensor (two i2c adresses are possible) that is connected to a probe? The speed can be calculated with the delta altitude: V=sqrt(2gh). The energy of 10 m/s correspond to a del...

Re: S.Port GPS V2 doesn't work properly.

No problem, you can interpret your observation also like this: After 1 to 3 minutes you have the GPS-fix and the LED flashes slower. But the old X8R firmware cannot communicate with the GPS, so step 3 is never reached. Taranis shows only trash, firmware does not know, that there is a GPS-V2. I am co...

Please share your solution here.
edit: Without an established S-Port Communication you will never see the slow blinking of the led, even if you have a fix - you can see this in the manual, where the LED-Signals are described.
