so the compiler gets the information about the target board from the IDE and sets the right timer load values based on compile time switches set somewhere in the code?

I see that it is possible to set the Vcc voltage in the configurator. When an ATMEGA328 runs at less than 5v one has to derate the oscillator speed. Most 3.3v arduino boards have a 8MHz clock rather than a 16MHz which is common for 5v operation. Does the configurator tool make any timing adjustments...

Ok here is the file I just read from the tx. Notice how the calculated vspd source is --- but I had set in on the radio as A2. Same thing happens if I set it to A2 in companion and then go check it on the tx. Am I missing something here?

The openXvario is wired to average the PWM output and is compiled as vavg=vspd so it is putting out a voltage proportional to vertical speed. I checked Auto offset. When I reset telemetry on the Taranis it does go to zero. But when the vspd goes to something like 0.5m/s the altitude climbs into the thousands in one second. How do I scale the value for A2?

I can't give any answer about the power question as I don't have that type of rx but if you can supply regulated 5v why not? On the other question you will also need a ground pin so the serial device has a ground reference. The power can come from the rx though.
