Sounds more like a usage issue, like they were 3.3V only modules and were powered with 5V.

Very common mistake, I would say

Looking at the screen while flying is not a good idea, obviously But set some alarms and listen to your telemetry instead. Like this you can keep your eyes on the model you're flying
With ErskyTx you can also listen to your favorite music album while you fly I do it all the time

Mike, with soft power this should never happen even if the switch goes bad? :o Remember I have designed a new Switch board for my 9x radios? This was the reason. My power switches can go bad any time they like, but unless they short to ground the radio will continue powered until the switch is moved...

I have built a few Tricopters and Quadcopters a few years ago. I still have to fix my Tricopter. Its first version had helicopter gyros on each arm. And it flew great

What about an ATtiny85? I know serial could be done via software serial, but would it work with the oXs code without modifying it??
