I found out that I don't need any special set up, it works as it is, I was misinterpreting the small gains in AS3X mode. Safe select and AS3X work as per the HH PItts manual.

How to set up 9XR with eflite Pitts S-1S 850mm BNF Basic with AS3X and SAFE Select
Hi can some one help me how to program my 9XR radio to be used with eflite Pitts S-1S 850mm BNF Basic with AS3X and SAFE Select? thanks. I'm able to activate safe, but not AS3X, I have a 3 position switch in channel 5, and GEAR switch w/ 2 positions in channel 6.
