Okay, I want to put my name as pilot on the stock flash screen. How do I pull that from the hex fill to place in my editor?

What firmware? If you are running er9x, there is an option to enter your name; and an option to turn the name display on/off.
long press the left button to get to it!

Oshb5ems, MS Paint works okay. You just need to be able to save as a monochrome BMP file, 64 x 128 bits.
There are two different things being discussed here, pilot name, and splash screen. If you search for the splash screen discussion there is a whole thread devoted to how to do it.

Hy,
I take Irfanview
load splash, zoom it,
open draw equipment
change or modify a splash
save as BMP
ready
