New sticks for the 9x

Post by bertrand35 »

Hi,
Did one of you replace the sticks of his 9x? If yes would it be possible to share some photos?
I am hesitating about trying these sticks:

To clarify...

the gimbals? or the stick ends?

The stick ends are easy... the gimbals.. not so easy!
Slope Soaring, FPV, and pretty much anything 'high tech'
...........if you think it should be in the wiki.. ask me for wiki access, then go add it!

No reason why they shouldn't work - electronically that is.
I'm not sure about the fit though.

I've read somewhere that you could order the gimbals from the Aurora 9. Those are good gimbals!

Thanks,
Yes, it's how they fit which I would like to know. Any photos from somebody who has already done the replacement?

If the don't or can't fit in the original I can always do a custom case ....They won't be wasted

Their three axis gymbal might be the way to build a single stick system, like the old Kraft.
I really liked that because flying was just like real aircraft, you just nudged in a little rudder as needed. Working all the switches might be difficult.

They're nice sticks, I have a pair here.
2 problems as I see it.
1: There doesn't seem to be enough depth in the TGY9x case to accomodate them
after you have fitted an adaptor plate?
The fixing centres are different.
2: The pots are 270 deg linear types, so the resolution might suffer?
Go on, try it someone!

actually now I have my beta board I may just get a pair ...actually I was also looking at the single-stick one ...May get both ....if the normal ones does not fit the 9x case I will make a custom one for myself. I always wanted a single stick ...need to know how it feels, might never look back (have always played CMR better on a keyboard with my right hand than with a steering and pedal setup) :D

Update: Just ordered a set ...feedback to follow

If you use them on the ersky9x board, I can do a tweak to the software, we have a 12 bit A2D instead of 10 bit so I can inmprove the resolution if they have 270 deg. pots.

Got them last night, sadly it is not a drop in replacement, but the good news is with a bit of work on the case they do fit. The fixing holes are off. I have not conected it to a 9x board yet so don't know there, but will come back. I may opt for making myself a custom case for the ersky9x using these, but first I want to make them fit on the old battered (spare) 9x case I have. Will post back here once I am done.
They are very nice sticks, have decent spring tension and overall looks and feels good.

My gimbals came in last night. I have a pretty good idea of what to do (sorry, no pictures yet):

1. Resize the opening in the front of the transmitter, so that the gimbal body fits correctly
2. Construct some mounting brackets (since the screw holes don't line up).

For the mounting bracket, I was thinking of using some thin aluminum stock. First cut to the right size, then drill and tap screw holes.

At the moment, I don't know how I'll go about resizing the opening in the front of the transmitter. I suppose I could use a dremel, but I'd make a mess of it. Any suggestions?

Hi!

about resizing:

i have found bottle from "Schwarzkopf developer lotion" from my wife's hair paints set, warped by doubleside tape and then sand paper - perfectly fits into hole and make this work very easy - 5min each

dremel works will be very hard to be accurate .... imho.

inserts/adapter i have done from garbage plastics from 5inch diskette case :-) 2-2,5mm thickness, shape not so simple but dremel can do this :-)

later i will find out pics from phone or take new one...

Max.

PS: brackets from aluminium i think much harder to develop because - i prefer plastic, holds very good....

in red circles - screws from face of t9x
DSC00254.jpg
left red circle - there are trim buttons pcb and mechanics very close and was need dremel works
right red circle - screw from face of t9x
bottom side not easy to get on picture but there is no additional material, only 2 sides left and righ, no inserts top/bottom, just 2 stripes
DSC00253.jpg
Bottle from paint developer lotion, reused for pure water for soldering
warp around with sand paper - i have used 200 or even 140, i think start with 200

yes please :-)

forget to say - better to reuse original wires from aurora sticks - there are very soft wires ...

PS: forget to say again! be very careful with dust there when dremelling! ball bearing is open!!!! i have disassemblied all to wash dust out!!!!

PPS: and another one addition, if springs for throttle in middle of case, then one of springs coming on PCB on back side/part (that one where radio module socket, big one) of transmitter case - was need to get 1-1,5mm from left side, be very careful because traces there on back(invisible) side...

Thanks for your pioneering work Max!
I will try to copy it to my ersky9x, when I have seen a photo,
One showing the finished result from the front of the case perhaps?
Then rely on Mike (as usual) to get the resolution back ;)

Thanks,

Clive

I'm done! Thanks for the help everyone.

For the sizing the holes, I used sandpaper wrapped around a rubber cement jar. Some of the wires didn't reach, so I had to solder some new ones on. My biggest problem was that the gimbal ratchet springs were hitting the pcb on the back of the transmitter. I had to dremel out a sizable amount of the pcb, and as a result had to solder in a bunch of rework wires (I cut through traces with the dremel). With all the wires, the inside of the case is pretty cramped - every time I open the case, I have to finagle the wires to close it back up.

I'm very happy to have my er9x running again! Thanks again!

well, the mechanical trim could always be locked in the middle.. but would be interesting at least what kind of pots it uses.. if compatible with the 9x pots would be perhaps a small price to pay..
