Taranis Gimals in a 9X

Post by Rob Thomson »

So... the good news?

Yes. They fit.
Yes. They work well

I have successfully upgraded an old 9x/sky9x with Taranis Gimbals. They work very well :-)

1There are a few complexities when installing.

1. They fit one way, and only one way. If you dont do it right - the back case wont close! Just a case of inverting the gimbals till you find the right way.
2. You need a modified firmware to sort the directions of the inputs out. They are 'inverted' relative to the 9x, and swapping the left/right cables will not work as there is an op amp in the gimbal.

The good news?

1. Getting the direction right is easy.
2. Getting the software update will be done with Companion (at some point)

Does it really has better resolution/accuracy when installed in a 9X? and where do you get them?

Note. I have them on a sky9x board. No idea if they work on stock!

Resolution - well difficult to say. I just like how smooth they are.

Getting them... most taranis dealers should be able to sources them. I got mine by knowing the right people at frsky, and the uk dealer.

Lol.. not really. I consider myself lucky to have got a set.

Looking at the T9 sales page, you would think they will be on the open market sometime soon.

What I can say is - the 9X never felt so good with taranis sticks. Silly really. FlySky could have made a good 'upgrade' version just by changing the CPU, and the Sticks.

yes, if I were to 'upgrade' the gimbal, it would be on my sky9x Tx too. I have not found anything Taranis can out perform my DJT and DHT equipped sky9x. (I have no use for the side sliders) the only thing I am looking forward to is the L series rx with XJT which has longer range as promised. ;)

Anyone don't try modding the original 9X? if the Taranis gimbal have built in opamp, the resolution reduced when I'd like change the original gimbal with these?

The Taranis gimbals have amplifiers mounted on the pots. This means the wiring to them HAS to be the correct way round. The 5V MUST go to the correct end. If you wire them the wrong way round, the protection diodes of the amplifiers will short out the 5V supply.

I only changed my right gimbal, so should I expect my rudder to be reversed too when I switch my left gimbal? I do Mode 2.

Might be rudder, or might be throttle!
In the short term, you could use -100% as the weight on the mix input to reverse the stick movement. If more people are now likely to do this mod, I'll need to address reversing the stick input for er9x/ersky9x. Which firmware are you using?

Mike maybe you can add the option to reverse it, I dont know how difficult it can be to make this possible. On another note, would you recommend me getting the aurora gimbals instead?

The code to reverse the sense is very easy, deciding how to provide a menu item to allow the user to configure it takes a little longer.

Couldn't the throttle reverse be used similar to the center beep in model setup? (I only have the 9x so dont really know if it is also on Taranis):

one row with RETA123...

where you can activate any input(s), that are shown reverse (dark) when active?

I've put something in, but I just combined a few ideas so I'll change what I've done. On the RADIO SETUP we have the stick MODE setup. On the line above are 4 images of the sticks. I'll see if I can reverse video any stick that is reversed.

Being able to reverse the stick on those 4 images would be cool, maybe being able to select an image and if you click on it it does dark like ReSt says and its reversed.

In my case, I put my gimbal just how the old one used to be, I replaced the RIGHT gimbad which had aileron pot on the top and elevator facing the edge of the case and it worked out fine
