A Custom Tray For The 9x

Post by jhsa »

Something I'd like to share.. I have a friend in Portugal from my former club that designed a really nice tray for the 9x radio.. actually he designed it first for his JR Radio but he had a prototype made for the 9x and I asked him to make me one..
Here are some photos..
It was laser cut and is made of acrylic. It has a little compartment where you can put a bigger battery or store stuff like cables. Can also use it for putting a receiver and battery for an wireless buddy system..
as you can see on the pictures the tx is held in place by the handle using a locking system. the only thing that is missing at this point is a rest for the arms if you fly with the fingers, but he is working on a removable one.. I do fly with my thumbs on the sticks, so for me it is not required at this moment. I didn't fly with it yet but it feels quite good. I think it will make it easier to launch the airplanes also as I can take both my hands off the radio and it doesn't move.. Will upload a video of my tray being cut as soon as i can fix the internet on my main computer. it's funny that when I left everything worked and come back to a broken UPS and internet.. Life I guess

Here is another photo as the maximum file number alowed per post seems to be 5..
Forgot to say that you can use this tray to work with the radio when working on the bench programming it. It has a retractable foot that keeps the tx at an angle when on the bench. It was one of the main reasons why I got it actually.
Also when you are outside, you can avoid the sun on the display by turning the tray upside down. It will then balance on the arms for the strap.. It's always good to cover the tx with some cloth anyway..

Joäo,
Thanks for the intro to this tray. Have you had much time to try it out yet?.
Very interested in getting one, freight is a bit of a killer to this part of the world NZ,(half cost of the unit).
Want to satisfy myself before committing. I really need one as i find hand launching my powered glider
rather cumbersome and need something rigid and this looked the part.
Thanks
Les
P.S is it supplied built up or in flat pack form?.

I think that normally is supplied assembled.. But I can ask my friend if he can send it as a kit if people wish..

I?ve been flying with it for a little while now. On the first day it felt strange but I found out it was because I was using it a bit too high. Lowered it a bit and it feels good now.. It is very handy to hand launch. before I had to hold the radio with one hand on it's side to keep my thumb on the stick and advance the throttle with my mouth.. that is gone now..

Wanted to make a video of me using it today but I was alone at the field :(
Will make one as soon as I find a cameraman ;) :D

No, advancing the throttle stick with the mouth is not a blowing job, as you can do it with your mouth closed.. or use the nose for example..

Anyway we were talking about this tray, and that as with any other tray, is much easier to launch the models..

Hi Les, just spoke to my friend and he can also send it as a kit.. It will be a little cheaper of course..
Also I think he found cheaper postage. He will mail you shortly..

He also found cheaper postage to the UK. I hope that the postage to Germany is also cheaper because I want another one for my other radio.. this time in black

Hi João,
Thanks for asking. I was hoping a flat pack version may have lowered the cost a little. Will look forward to his reply.
I like the idea of the tray enclosed, very handy.

Here is a video of me using my tx tray to fly my modded Pico Cub.. The video is boring. It's just me flying, so if you want just watch the beginning and the end. that's where it shows the tray and some audio funcionallity on the 9x..
Didn't have anyone at the field to film so I had to leave my phone in the car. :D

what is the trick of lacuching these push motor plane? I still have problem launching My AXN. It just dip down (flat down not diving - head down) after I throw it out then climb up. I see yours just fly straight out even. most of the time mine AXN belly is almost touching the ground before it climbs up.

Sounds like you either have the motors thrust line out of wack.. kr the cog is wrong.

One option is a launch mode switch that adds up elevator for launch.

the easystar, well at least the old version also has that problem.. I guess I'm just used to it.. but the tray does make it easier to launch.. before it was difficult to launch and hold the radio.. No, Kaos, I'm not going to describe it again
But yeah I think the easystar has a wrong motor angle as well..

this is as good as I can launch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQyXi0nKS9o

most of the time it is like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53GEkDJWAhg

the CG seems to be good not head heavy or tail heavy, just during the launching the whole pane likes to drop as a whole.

edit : wrong link on 2nd vid

yeah, the easystar tends to do the same.. I think I just automatically pull on the elevator when I launch it.. In normal flight, when I push forward on the throttle wants to dive a little..
