I was able to acquire a Bridgeport Milling Machine,
which has a 3 phase 1HP motor.
I only have 1 phase (230v) power to use for this motor.
So in my research I found that everyone today is using a Variable Frequency Drive.
Was suggested to me that I purchase larger capacity VFD then what is needed.

So today I received the,
VEVOR VFD 7.5KW 220V 10HP, 1 or 3 Phase Input, 3 Phase Output Variable Frequency Drive,
AC 33A 0~1000HZ CNC Motor Inverter Converter for Motor Speed.

Looking over the 110 pages of the PDF Manual,
I am feeling somewhat lost with much of the setting options and what changes I may need to do.
Here is the PDF Manual download: https://d2v0huudrf11kh.cloudfront.net/v ... 589767.pdf

I know the first item to change is the 50Hz to 60Hz setting in the VFD.
This motor can run 50Hz or 60Hz and my input power is 60Hz, so I will change the setting parameter F005 to 60,
and setting parameter F004 to 60 and set parameter setting F003 to 60.

Here is the Bridgeport Milling Machine Motor info: 3phase, 60Hz, 1hp, 230V, 1730 rpm, 3.5A

I would appreciate any help getting the setting changes that need to be done to run this 3 phase 1HP motor. :)

Update: here are the Function Parameter Settings that I have made so far.
It is making more sense to me now.

I do not know what the F143 code should be yet, which is Number of Motor Poles of the 3phase, 230V, 1Hp, 60Hz,1730 RPM, 3.5 amp motor.
The VFD default is 04, which may be correct.

Found this, Number of Poles (AC Motor) Calculator
and I am not sure that this Calculator is yet and is it an OK thing ?
https://ncalculators.com/electrical/ind ... ulator.htm

So I entered 60 Hz and 1730 RPM and then clicked CALCULATE
results 4.16 poles which is close to 4 poles.

I am leaning toward 4 pole, which is the Function Parameter Default setting.
Also found this chart that seems to support 4 poles too, (1800 rpm and 60hz = 4 poles).

I am going with 4 poles.

The number poles is used to calculate the rpm on the display.

Important thing to set is max amps so you don't burn out the motor under load. The VFD will feed more amps to try to maintain set speed under load.

Start with a slow start and slow brake. The VFD will ramp up amps to try to start/stop as fast as you set those parameters. You can make it faster until the amps reach Max amp set point.

I converted three lathes to VFD to run on single phase 220V and it works great but it takes some testing to get things right. Lathes can have very high start up and brake currents if you have a heavy blank. A milling machine should be more forgiving.

Hi pmullen503,
Thank you for your info, as it is good and helpful info.

I believe 4 poles are correct for this function parameter: F143 “Number of Motor Poles”.

I have been studying the manual and it has about 110 pages with many setting options.
Also VEVOR is communist red china company, which they seem to continue to short-cut in doing a proper job writing manuals.
Anyways, the manual has two sections about the Function Parameters that makes a lot more pages then needed.
Pages 20 to 37 N0.5 Function List F000 to F199.
Then it has pages 38 to 95 N0.6 Detailed Function Descriptions F000 to F199,
which is the same as N0.5 pages, but with N0.6 a lot more info about each function parameter
and I suggest to start here page 38 to save on confusion and time.
With that said, it is best to read and look through the whole manual first and take some time to process the info after, if you need too.

With this VEVOR H100-7.5S2-C0 I did ask several questions at the VEVOR web page and VEVOR did reply with an email back to me by the next day.
Most of the VEVOR answers were helpful, but a few were the normal communist red china company playing-stupid to cause you to give up and not bother them anymore.
I always rewrite the question and ask them again until they respond with a proper answer, which normally has worked well for me.

So for an outline for making the Function Parameter changes, you may want to try this.
1 Set your input voltage and what your output voltage for the motor.
2 Set the input and output frequency.
3 Set the motor parameters
4 Then look at the feature parameter settings that you need to have.

VEVOR VFD model: H100-7.5S2-CO VFD
Bridgeport Milling Motor info: 3phase, 60Hz, 1hp, 220V, 1730 rpm, 3.5A

A Trouble:
When I press RUN the VFD begins ramping up power to the motor
and in about 1 second or less of time it goes into an overload fault E.oLL

This fault E.oLL is an overload fault which is tripping when the VFD, which seems to be outputting low current when starting the motor rotating.
So my thinking was it may be tripping before the motor had enough current and/or time to start the motor rotating.

I found Function Parameter F011: “Lower Limit of Frequency” setting was set to 0 Hz and I changed it to 6 Hz
and this did allow the motor start rotating on startup to it's full speed of 1730 rpm (motor seems to be working properly).

I was also able to turn the Frequency Pot knob down lowering the motor RPM down.
When the frequency gets to about 5 Hz the E.oLL fault is activated in the VFD.
With the F011: “Lower Limit of Frequency” set to 6 Hz the VFD will keep the motor rotating at the 6Hz and with no E.oLL fault.

This seems to be a work-around to skip by the motor startup overload fault being tripped.

Also when using the VFD F/R (forward and reverse) button,
the motor ramps down to a stopped rotation and then should startup rotating in the reverse direction,
but when it reaches the lower frequency below 6 Hz is goes into the overload fault.

I can clear the E.oLL fault by pressing the RUN button and motor will startup in the reverse direction.
I have tried changing a few other Function Parameter settings, but I have not had any progress in correcting this trouble yet.

Milling Motor info: 3phase, 60Hz, 1hp, 220V, 1730 rpm, 3.5A
Still having trouble with low-frequency overload faulting at motor startup between 0 Hz and 6 Hz.
Maybe caused by Parameter Settings not being proper and I am not sure what all the Parameter Settings do.
I have been looking at these Parameter Settings as they may still have improper value settings for this motor.

F006: Intermediate Frequency = 10 Hz
F007: Starting Frequency = 15 Hz
F009: Intermediate Voltage = 14 v
F010: Booster Voltage of low-frequency Torque = 5 v
F011: Lower Limit of frequency: = 15 Hz

Update:
Studying the manual and adjusting function parameter settings, I was still getting the overload fault "E.oLL".
I was able to get a work-around from the fault being tripped by changing the function parameter setting F007 Lowest Hz: from .5 Hz to 6 Hz,
but the fault would still happen sometimes when the motor rpm (Hz) went below the 6 Hz.

Watching the amps go up when the motor rpm went low with the Hz going low also,
I could see the VFD current output (amps) going over the motor rated amps of 3.5A.
I found a youtube video talking about when a motor starts up
it uses more amps to get the motor turning and up to full speed.
I found several VFD function parameter settings that may address this trouble,
but they did little to no help in fixing this overload fault "E.oLL".

This model VEVOR VFD 7.5 is rated up to a 10 hp motor outputting up to 33 amps.
I then tried increasing the F142 parameter setting from 3.5 amps to 6.5 amps
and this did help to stop the VFD overload fault from tripping, some of the times.
I slowly increased the max amp setting higher up to 8.5 amps and this has stopped the fault from tripping.
Watching the VFD amps output when the motor starts up it will go for a very short instant up to about 10 amps
and quickly drop down to 2.4 amps at the 1730 rpm (60 Hz) motor speed.

With the parameter setting F142 "Rated Current of Motor" should be set to 3.5A.
But is causing a fault at motor starting, so by setting F142 higher to 8.0A,
the faulting is prevented and this VFD and motor are working properly together now.

But I am thinking there may be less protection for this old motor then what may be proper.
I did not find any parameter setting like “Boosting Motor Current at Starting ”,
though there seem to be something built into the VFD for this,
but it is not enough for this motor when F142 is set to 3.5A.

Mostly I will not be needing to be adjust the motor speed with the VFD and with that said,
I do need to be able to reverse the motor direction using the VFD.

I also decided to change F007 "Starting Frequency" to 15 Hz, which this helps with preventing the fault E.oLL a little.
F011 "Lower Limit of Frequency" to 14.5 Hz. which also helps a little.

And I found through testing with the keyboard button Forward/Reverse (VFD button F/R)
that the Parameter F142 "Motor Current" needed to be set to 8.0 amps so that the overload fault will not trigger.
8 amps is the lowest that the VFD would not fault when motor starts from 0 rpm.

These Parameter setting changes seem to be the best that I am able to figure out so far.

Re: Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) setting up

On this VEVOR VFD 7.5 Model: H100-7.5S2-C0 there is on the VFD keyboard a F/R button which will reverse the motor direction.
I was having trouble to activate this function when I did a short press of the F/R button.
I found out how to properly activate this function by pressing and holding the F/R button for about 1 to 2 seconds until the red LED light comes on.
The motor will then decelerate down to a stop and then start up in the reverse direction back to the set rpm (Hz).

I have the Bridgeport Mill moved to its new location.
I am planing to enclose the VFD in a box at the back of the machine
and have the VFD keyboard in another box closer to the front of the Mill.

Watch the temperature in that box for a while, VFD will generate heat, not really meant to be fully enclosed with no airflow...

Hi Kilrah, Thank you for advising to keep an eye on the box temperature.
I did mod the bottom of the box by adding a screen and a deflector to help with air flow in and out of the box.
This VFD has a fan with a strong cooling air flow out of the bottom
and I believe the back of the VFD being metal, works like a heat-sink too.

The motor uses about 2.4 amps when free running and is rated at 3.5 amps (60Hz) at continuous full working load.
The VFD instructions said to set the amps of the motor to the motor label 3.5 amps,
but that gave me a fault.
The VFD when starts ramping up slowly from 0 to 60Hz over about 15 seconds of time.
To get the motor to start turning I changed the default setting to start the motor at a higher frequency,
but that was not allowing the reversing of the motor direction with the VFD.
With this VFD, it will show the amps being used and it showed that it was using about 10 amps at the start of motor rotation
for very short instant of time.

I did contact VEVOR and they said this VFD would work with this motor
and when I reported the fault at startup I got the normal China reply
“you have a fault”, which means you are on your own, we are no help for you.

Anyways, I increased the 3.5 amps up and when I got up to 8 amps the VFD stopped going into fault when reversing the motor.
My understanding is that today’s motors use 125% amps over the working amps.
And I have not found any info for what this motor about what the starting amps are needed,
which I believe this motor may use a higher starting amps percentage.
I was not able to find in the VFD settings where the motor starting amps could be changed to a higher percentage.
And I do not like that I needed to change the 3.5 amps up to 8 amps as this setting sets the motor protections to be a lot higher.
I do not see a way around it and so it may be what it is.

Re: Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) setting up

I have not given up on trying to find a Function Parameter Setting that will allow more power to the motor
when starting and reversing the motor from a stopped position.
I have been asking VEVOR for some help and whoever may be answering (seems to be from several different persons) may be helpful.
I receive sometime a very good answer and other times a very poor answer.

Anyways, the art of asking a question properly is also a challenge
as when one does not have a proper understanding of what each Function Parameter Setting does.
When asking a questions one is only allowed up to 500 characters (or spaces) in each question,
which some times has not been large enough to give a good back ground to what has been tried and/or not tried
and to what the trouble is.

Here is one of my questions, with the VEVOR answer.

QUESTION:
VEROR said this VFD will work with this motor.
Bridgeport Mill Motor = 60Hz, 1hp, 220V, 3.5A, 3phase, 1730rpm
Is there a setting which I can increase the motor start up power so that it will not go into fault when revering the motor direction ?

Answer from Vevor September 6, 2023:
Please confirm whether the motor is completely stationary before giving the reverse signal when it is running in the reverse direction,
or whether it is giving the reverse signal directly when it is running forward.
You can set parameter F009 to a higher point, but it is best not to exceed 18.

So I did make the Function Parameter Setting F009 from 14 to 18
and it did not make any change to the VFD faulting.

I have submitted another question today and so maybe will receive a better answer this time.

Review the Trouble: The trouble is when revering the motor direction F/R, the VFD goes into overload fault E.oLL
and to stop this fault from happening I have set F142 to 8.2 amps, but it should be set to 3.5 amps for proper protection.

Update: I replied back to Vevor's questions and also again asked my question again.
Received this email answer back:

Answer from Vevor September 8, 2023:
Please change F009 to 8
The resistance of the grinder motor may be relatively small.
Changing it to a larger value may not work.
Try changing it to a smaller value.

Results: F009 set to 10.0v did help in being to be able to lower the F142 from 8.2 amps to 7.2 amps.

So I was not able to enter 8 and found that the the VFD firmware does not allow the F009 setting to be set any lower then 10.0v.
Anyways, this results is in the right direction :)
