X4R & XD9 plus - expected altitude?

Post by randallpatrickc »

Just started flying a big floater e glider - getting to 130m altitude and "Low RSSI" warnings.
That's not very high - my old Futaba FM 8UA on same plane would speck out with no loss of control.
I have the Rx on one side of a 2" wide fuse with the last 2.5" of both antennas poking out the sides at 90deg to each other, in plastic straws, angled back 45deg to fuse.
What are peeps getting for typical sailplane altitudes?
(And, supplementary qu; when "Range" is selected, how far should the Rx be from the Tx to get a reading? What's a good reading at that range?)
Thanks for any assistance.

This is my worst antenna installation, shortened whisker antennas inside the fuselage of a carbon wing glider:

Your X9D is slightly (2-3 dB) better than my X9E and your antenna installation is better than mine. You should get better RSSI values. Maybe you have a faulty X4R? The elder X4R seem to be sensitive for electrostatic voltage on the antennatips, the newer ones are safe. My rangetests (TX in rangetestmode) usually show about RSSI 50 in 50 m distance (RX and TX at least 1m above ground, clear line of sight). If everything works as foreseen, you will get a range far beyond visibility of your plane.

There is also a small chance, that your TX is faulty. You want to test with another RX or TX to be sure, whether RX or TX cause the issue.

In your Log Image, the altitude is from the ground i guess, not the absolute altitude ?
From what sensor? gps or vario?

It is the relative altitude from ground, measured with an openXsensor (vario). Here you can see the part with the touchdown.
