moxieman3864: Try leaving the radio off and plugging in the USB cable. The radio should then start in STM DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode and you should hear the tones on your PC indicating a new USB device has been found. This was used to flash the firmware, so should be tested and working.
If you don't get the tones, then please check the cable is a 'real' USB cable, not a 'charging' cable with not data wires.
If you do get tones, we'll take it from there.

Hi moxieman3864,
To help answer some of your other questions you have.
moxieman3864 wrote:first off when i go into radio set up it says for ver mod 9xt verv.1946-mike date 26.08.2015 ersky9x r218 is that correct ?
Yes that is correct.
moxieman3864 wrote:is there a step by step how to manual for when your done installing the 9xtreme board ?
You can use the new er9x manual found here: (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6473)
and to find other info see here: (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=7182) and (viewforum.php?f=126).
moxieman3864 wrote:i can't figure out the voice thing either
You need to down-load "Voice Pack for Ersky9x_16Khz" then unzip and place folder named "voice" on to your 9Xtreme SD-card, (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7715).
To setup voices go to your: Model Setup / Voice / Voice Alarms to add your voices .

To get the two drives appearing on the computer you need to start the radio in "bootloader" mode. You may have been doing this, but the method is to hold both horizontal trims towards the centre, then power the radio on.
The radio should then start and show "Boot Loader V1.7Ready", and maybe "No Firmware" underneath.

Now plug the USB cable in to the computer, the two drives should now appear.

Is this what you have been doing?

Mike

For step by step guidance on flashing and upgrading firmware etc on the 9Xtreme, can we follow exactly the instructions in the 9XR PRO document titled 'Communicating with Computer' (attached) ?

Yes, if you want to use eepskye, you need to be in bootloader mode.

I'm just wondering how to get the message "No Firmware" to go away when you go into boot-loader mode.
What is the name of the file and where do you put it? :?

Download the latest 9XT firmware file, create a folder called "firmware" on your SD Card root directory if it's not already there, and copy the firmware file to the folder.

When you run the bootloader it lists all the .bin files found in the "FIRMWARE" (no 'S'') directory. If there are no files, then it displays "No Firmware".

If you put a .bin file (or several) in the "FIRMWARE" directory, then its (their) name(s) will be displayed rather than "No Firmware".

Mike, maybe "No Firmware" should be renamed as it is causing confusion? Maybe no firmware on the SD Card, or maybe No Backup Firmware, or something similar.

Hi Mike
I'm just trying out the firmware update process at the moment -

I checked the version of the firmware on the 9Xtreme - it was V1946 26/8/15 r218

I downloaded the ersky9x9XT_rom.bin file from the homepage on to the SD card using the USB connection and then flashed it to the TX using bootloader

Everything worked ok and it said flash complete

I checked the version again on the TX - it was the same version, ie V1946 26/8/15 r218 !

Is this correct or is the flash process not working properly ?

I understood from prevoius posts that there is a new firmware version dated 21 Oct ?

any thoughts

It's here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4676#p65894 in ersky9xProvR218g.zip.

I haven't done a formal release (yet).

There is a later version also there from 1-Nov-2015 called ersky9x9XT_romFixEXTn.zip.
This fixes the problems with the EXT signal selection for fitting more 3-position switches.

Mike
Thanks for the link to the firmware test versions - I will keep track on that

I have now successfully updated the firmware using version dated 21 October that you posted earlier - so that proves that its all working as expected

Just one other question - when in bootloader mode, it sometimes can take a minute or so before the text comes on to the screen - is this normal?

Ok, I can't find a 2.3mm drill bit anywhere.. ideas? ;) Would a 2mm drill also do it? I don't want to damage the plastic, but I also don't want to open the holes to much with a thicker drill bit :(

No, you should see "9XTREME" in the centre almost immediately (this comes from the original mainboard, followed by the "Boot Loader" screen within a second or so.

I live in Canada, where we're supposed to be metric but all our construction tools, materials, etc are 'American'. So I wouldn't be able to find it either. I don't know how common M2.3 is, but it certainly is available online so I didn't think it was abnormal. I used a 3/32". I don't think it is THAT critical. The screws are M2.5 so make sure the drill is smaller than that. If M2.3 isn't available, is M2.4? 2.2?

No. I could only find 2mm locally..
Will have to try a 2mm and try to open the hole a bit more. Fingers crossed. :( if it goes wrong I can always remove the pins and solder wires and plugs..

Well, when I first realized they screwed up with the screws... as a test I cranked the screws into mine without boring the hole out at all. Yes it damaged the posts... no, it didn't matter at all. It holds perfectly well. You can even take the screws out and put in the original smaller ones and it still grips. Plastic is flexible.

I will see if I have some longer thinner screws here. Maybe some from micro servos, I don't know.

I will solder headers to all the numbered pads also. That will make it easier to connect stuff I guess.

Drill bit. I just pressed my screws against my drill bit kit and picked one that was larger that the screw body but smaller diameter than the threads. Just undersized. I live in a SAE measurement world so I apply the calibrated eyeball tool.
I also used a finger chuck and wiggled it a little. In the past if I made a hole too large, I'd fill it with ca and re drill it.
When I have split a post I have several fixes.
One is to see if a brass tubing sleeve can be put over it. Sometimes I luck out with the diameter. Then fill with CA and re drill.
Another is to wrap thread or thin string around the split post the total length. Then apply CA to the string. It reinforces the post for use again.
I've even gathered up the shattered pieces to reconstruct the post with ca before wrapping and re drilling it.
Use a toothpick to apply CA or kicker. It's easier to control the amount and where the liquid goes in tight places.
Time and wine on my side I guess[emoji3][emoji485]

Strip the hole with the original screw, that should give enough room for the new screws.

Hi Mike
The bootloader screen seems to take time to settle in - it flashes a couple of times before becoming permanently on and then works fine.

Also I dont get the '9XTREME' message

Will this jeopardise the transfer process at some point and do I need to take any action to prempt a problem?

Hi João,
For the Thread Tap size: M2.5 x 0.45, use Tap Drill Size: 2.00 mm.
See chart: (http://www.industrialhardware.com/skin1 ... Sizes.html)
(http://www.banggood.com/10Pcs-Micro-HSS ... 24567.html)

It is risky and I should not do it, but I just pushed very hard on the black screws and cranked them in.
I do not recommend it however.
