Turnigy 9XR push buttons

Post by jeffstu »

I have placed an order for Turnigy 9xr transmitters 2 off and have read a lot about the programming buttons not
working correctly and intermittent.
somebody has posted on some forum about a modification to solder in some min button but cant find anything.
i am wondering if anybody on this forum knows anything about this, and what button switches could be used.
regards Jeff

Sure, I made a video tutorial.
You find it in the tutorial section on 9xforums
http://forum.turnigy9xr.com/video-tutor ... -t387.html
I used tactile micro switches 4x4x1.5 mm buttons. I don't think wider buttons would work. A bit smaller would not hurt.

I just found out that the switches I installed are actually 5x5x1.5. The seller delivered something else than he specified. The 5x5x1.5 buttons are just a tad to large to be perfect.
This means that your 4x4x1.5 buttons should be perfect for the job.

I used a switch from digikey, SW1020CT-ND. Size is 2X4X1.5mm. Get some good glasses and small tip iron, SMT pads. Also have a 100 of the above reference switches if anyone needs a few.

The Ebay version of the switch have their bodies secured by two metal tags that tuck under the underside. When I soldered the first switch to the board I found that these tags shorted out the contacts meaning that the switch was permanently on. There doesn't seem to be a way to position the switch to avoid this. One option is to remove part of the board contact surface to avoid the shorting but I haven't read of anybody who says that they have had to do that and I want to avoid eliminating any chance of me returning to the stock switch arrangement by modifying the board. How have you all got around this?

I used a file and scratches away the existing surface. Pretty much a one way mod!
Slope Soaring, FPV, and pretty much anything 'high tech'
...........if you think it should be in the wiki.. ask me for wiki access, then go add it!

The switches I used from digikey have one tab per end, not same design as ones from eBay, I have both. The digikey switch is smaller to work with but IMO are a better choice for design and purpose. Later today ill try to post a single pic of one switch, so small it's hard to focus. The only problem I have is on the cross side I have to be exact when pressing a direction or the cross will press two instead of one. I read somewhere about that problem and the solution was to build up the cross. Can't find the post now.

Here is pic from iPad. Note the two solder pads on each end they are .5MmX2mm, like I said surface mount technology.

Having a few thoughts about these buttons. I could add some code so that on detecting one of the 4 buttons pressed, the other 3 are ignored until the first one is released.

Edit: Would cost 62 bytes of flash!

isn't there a function with the buttons that when you press 2 of them (right and left? ) inverts the value? for example -100 becomes +100?

That's on openTx, but it's disabled on the 9XR version as it's not mechanically possible (or at least not reliably, it happens when you don't want but never does when you'd want).

Not sure Mike's idea is worth it, because half of the time it will pick the button you didn't want to press as being the "right" one!

With a tweak of the code, I can allow both LEFT and RIGHT, while blocking UP and DOWN if either LEFT or RIGHT is pressed first, saves 4 bytes of flash as well.

That's true, I just loaded the code onto my 9X with the encoder. It's cured the problem I sometimes get with DOWN happening when I press RIGHT, AND I can press RIGHT and LEFT together to negate a value without UP or DOWN happening.

I'll commit this change.if only for the encoder.
