X9D+ No more telemetry of any kind after 2.2.0 upgrade...

Post by T3chDad »

I did two things in one day a couple of weeks ago.

1) My ENT button had started behaving strangely. I took apart my Tx and carefully removed the LCD board. The little plastic buttons that push down on the micro switches on the board had come disconnected at the bottom near the ENT button. Simple fix...a little CA to hold the button back in place as original. Nothing was done to the electronics. I took pictures of the inside prior to doing anything, so that I could get everything back exactly as it was when I started. ENT button works great now.

2) I immediately upgraded to OpenTX 2.2.0 after that. Previous version was 2.1.9. I thoroughly researched the process and didn't have any issues with anything. Sound packs, models, custom sounds, custom images are all working great. Bootloader, firmware, and EPROM all match.

However...I quickly noticed after the upgrade that telemetry wasn't working. No RSSI or anything. At this point, I've reverted to 2.1.9, tried factory resets, re-upgrade to 2.2.0, re-binding existing receivers, creating new models and binding previously-unused receivers...nothing has had any affect on telemetry not working. "Discover sensors" does nothing, there is no RSSI strength bar next to the battery bar on the main display page. All receiver/aircraft functions are working fine. I have a mix of Rxs...X8R, X6R, X4R, S6R...nothing from any of them. Edit: Range checks are fine with all models and their bound receivers.

I would love get some objective input. I've been looking at this off and on for a couple of weeks now and would greatly appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Thanks!

Does the TX report SWR?

I imagine you had to separate both halves of the radio to work on it, it's likely a connection hasn't been reseated properly.

Also, did you make sure to disconnect the battery before working on the radio? Manipulating the ribbon cables if power is present can/will permanently damage the radio.

I'm not sure what you mean. All telemetry worked flawlessly prior to firmware upgrade.

First thing I do is remove the battery when I'm going into the radio. I opened it up again this morning, compared it to the original photos, checked all connections and appears to be good. I would have guessed that a hardware problem would manifest itself with more severe symptoms than JUST telemetry not working... ??

If you upgraded from 2.0.x, you may not realize that the sensors must be discovered for each model.
Tx and Rx powered and sensors connected, then on telemetry page scroll down to "Discover Sensors' and enter.

I came from 2.1.9. Yes, as I stated in my original post, "Discovering" yields nothing.

Additional information is that range checks on all models and Rxs is fine.

SWR reports the quality of the signal coming from the radio antenna itself..
If the radio is not reporting it, then you might have a communication problem between the RF module and the radio..
I don't use OpenTX but I guess you have a telemetry field called SWR??
Please check what is its value..

I get "NO DATA" trying to view any telemetry data whatsoever. I found some guides that demonstrate how to check SWR, but a telemetry Rx has to be bound and active. Even so since telemetry doesn't appear to be working, I can't check the SWR value.

I believe you don't even need a receiver to be ON for the radio to report SWR.. it has nothing to do with telemetry. That reports the quality of the Transmitter antenna..

On 2.2.0 my RAS value is 0 on the analog test screen. That's supposed to be the new SWR value.

Ok, then if it shows "zero" that means that unless you have a perfect antenna match to the RF module, you are not getting any information back from the RF module into the radio..

Please follow Kilrah's advice and check for connectors that aren't well seated.. It could be as simple as that.. Let's hope :(

All connection check-out just fine. I've seen numerous threads and YT vids that people have a value of 0 for RAS/SWR when functioning normally.

Thanks for the help. I may just have to send this off to Aloft for repair. I may just get a QX7 in the mean time.
