EU model Vs non EU model

Is there a physical hardware difference between the EU/non EU versions or is it purely based on the firmware used.
There is an option in setup to select EU, America or Japan what does this do and is it linked to above?
Appreciate advise.

its only a software difference afaik

RF module firmware is different.
