Taranis Q X7 Right Gimbal Not Straight

Post by dahai8 »

The right gimbal leans to the right about 5º when centered. The springs are set to max tension and the software registers it as 'centered', but it off to the right slightly.
I don't see any adjustment screws inside to correct this.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

You may need to recalibrate your sticks and pots, look for the Calibrate screen.

The gimbal itself is not straight, as the title of the topic says.. Nothing to do with calibration..

If the gimbal's fit to the front case is improper then correct the fit by wedging it over or remove some material.
5º over a short distance is very small, maybe it is not a problem that needs to be fixed ?

Well, if I buy a new radio, I wouldn't like it to come with such a problem, even if it is "only" 5º :)

Hi heliphil,
Without being able to take it part and seeing what is causing the 5º tilt, I can not guess.
If it is a problem for you (if new under warranty return it for a replacement),
take it apart to see if you can spot the 5º tilt cause.
You could then take pictures and post them here.
Could maybe be as simple as a piece of debris (dirt) between front case and the Gimbal.

Negative Sir, I don't like any of the taranis, specially the first one and the plus. No encoder, terrible button placement among others :) ;)

The only Taranis that could eventually appeal to me is the QX7. But why would I want a radio that is worse than the ones I already own? ;) :)
I find my radios way superior than the Taranis Plus, apart from the bigger screen (my opinion of course). Not a biggie for me :)

Here's some pics:

You can see the mounting in the frame is straight and flush, but the gimbal post itself leans to the right.

Here's the guts. It looks like there are two posts that rest on the tension bar and that determines vertical-ness. But I don't see any way to adjust this. Maybe I'm missing something.

It's annoying because the gimbal protectors don't sit right and I thought it'd be an easy fix.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Hi dahai8,

Yes, I have never see an adjustment for what you want to do, on any Gimbals.

Here are some possible causes and fixes:
1. The Gimbal Stick Shaft maybe bend 5º.
a) Replace Gimbal
b) Bend Gimbal Stick Shaft back to 0º.

2. Piece of debris (dirt) between front case and the Gimbal causing 5º tilt.
a) Remove Gimbal from front radio case, inspect surface between Gimbal to Front Radio Case and clean and/or adjust to make proper fit.

3. Defective Qx7 Front Radio Case and/or defective Gimbal.
a) Warranty (return for replacement ?)
c) Not a big deal, just use it the way it is.

Without being able to look it over myself I am not able to think of something more right now.
Please let us know what you find or do.

In my opinion the basis of the gimbal where the aluminium is screwed on is correct but the aluminium - part of the gimbal doesn't fit correctly. So it is possible the aluminium is bored incorrect.

To me it appears that the base of the gimbal post is not horizontal with the gimbal assembly itself. So, yeah, could be a bad bore.
If what I think I'm seeing is correct, and there are no hidden adjustments, then the only way I see to correct this is to glue or tape a shim between the post and the tension bar inside the assembly. That's probably a bad idea as I can just imagine the mayhem that would ensue if it ever came off inside while flying my drone.
So, I think I'll just try to suppress my OCD and live with it.
Thanks again for everyone's input!!!
