My Taranis x9d Plus stopped working after FW update

Post by PBoh »

Hi,
Signed up for this forum with hope of getting some help to bring my Tx back to life. Have had the Tx for about a year and have a few times successfully updated to more recent OpenTx FW version using Companion. Until quite recently. When wanting to update to version 2.0.20 things went wrong; I may very well have made a mistake somewhere without knowing it. In any case it came up with the OpenTx window and the usual Throttle Warning; by pushing any button to continue it just starts all over again (stuck in a loop). Sometimes when switching OFF I have to remove the battery to switch the Tx off.

After studying the various web forums (like OpenTx University, RCforums and this forum) I have tried several of the suggestions and methods to recover without success. After the last attempt with flashing FW with the TX OFF, using Companion and the Zadig SW, the result is the same. Have also been careful about selecting the correct TX in the SETTING drop-down in Companion (having same version as the FW). When hitting the Write-button I see that the FW is first read from the Tx (no warnings about FW compatibility); then the write-process starts and goes on nice and slowly and ends at 100% without any message; neither error message nor success message. Still no success.

Have also tried the Tx bootloader (Taranis bootloader 2.0.20) method ("three finger start")after adding the FW to the FIRMWARES folder in the Tx; same result.

I have tried both Linux-based OS (UBUNTU 14.04), Windows XP and Windows 10 PCs with the same lack of success.

I see myself as no wizard with PCs and have the nasty feeling that I have made a blunder somewhere that is TOO obvious but has slipped by me. Please, can anyone put me in the right direction.

I disconnect the battery and connect a usb cable between Taranis and my computer (Linux)
That is, what I see here.

Please do the same and post result.

So that looks good. USB connection OK. Sees the STM device.

We have to use Mode 1 like written here https://github.com/opentx/opentx/wiki/T ... ootloaders

Can you verify dfu-util on your Linux machine in companion?
I am not familiar with the Buntus, Debian has it, PCLinuxOS not ...

Can do this in a terminal.

Code: Select all

[kalle@nostromo ~]$ dfu-util -l
dfu-util 0.8

Don't ask me for details, but [0483:df11] is my Taranis

After you verified dfu-util, I would suggest, you look here and step in with part2.

Good luck ;)

Hi KH,

I can confirm that I get same Companion screen as you showed when clicking DFU-UTIL configuration.

When running dfu-util in terminal widow I see almost the same as you:

per@per-HP-dx5150-MT:~$ dfu-util -l
dfu-util 0.7

Copyright 2005-2008 Weston Schmidt, Harald Welte and OpenMoko Inc.
Copyright 2010-2012 Tormod Volden and Stefan Schmidt

Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=0, name="UNDEFINED"
Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=1, name="UNDEFINED"
Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=2, name="UNDEFINED"
Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=3, name="UNDEFINED"

In doing as you suggest by opening the link you provide, I recognise the web page. However, when following (once more) the procedure described in part2 I still get the same result as already described.

When trying to write back to the radio the FW that came with it when I bought it (more that 1,5 years ago) I still get the same result with one small detail being different. The welcome screen and the Throttle/Switch warning screen have a white backlight (it was blue before) but after that it 'loops' after these two screens.

I have twisted my brain over this and tried no less than four different PCs (two running UBUNTU14.04 LTS, the third running Windows XP and the last with Windows 10). All of them result in the same things happening.

Was hoping that I perhaps others had experienced the same. Has something unexpected happened to my Taranis since the problem does not seem to be PC related? Can something (very) unexpected have happened deep inside the TX?
Thanks for your efforts; I learn something new every time.

Hi PBoh.

THIS here
Bildschirmfoto92.jpeg
is NOT OK!

Have a look here viewtopic.php?t=6196 ,
viewtopic.php?t=6879 ,
and here https://my.st.com/public/STe2ecommuniti ... views=1017

And this here !!!! https://hoxtonowl.com/forums/topic/upda ... r-problem/

I am not a specialist for those problems ;) , I would try to run "dfu-util -l" as root and when this works, also run companion as root.
But that is just guessing.

Have run dfu-util as root (sudo) with the following:

Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=0, name="@Internal Flash /0x08000000/04*016Kg,01*064Kg,07*128Kg"
Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=1, name="@Option Bytes /0x1FFFC000/01*016 e"
Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=2, name="@OTP Memory /0x1FFF7800/01*512 e,01*016 e"
Found DFU: [0483:df11] devnum=0, cfg=1, intf=0, alt=3, name="@Device Feature/0xFFFF0000/01*004 e"

it is far beyond me to verify if the 'name data' is OK or not. One detail I can understand is that your listing shows a device serial number and my listing above does not

After that Companion will see the Taranis when trying to flash (FW is first read from the radio and the selected FW written back to the radio with report of success) but final results are not OK. I do not know at the moment how to run Companion in root.

Now "dfu-util -l" looks better ;)

Open a terminal.
Type at the prompt "comp" and hit the TAB key
In terminal you will now see possible commands like this here
Bildschirmfoto93.jpeg
I have companion21 and companion22 to choose.
What do you have?
Then do in that terminal just a "sudo companionxx" and we are in business ....

Good luck

I don't care. You are running ver. 0.7 and I have ver. 0.8. You are on some Buntu, I am on PCLinuxOS at the moment. Could switch over to DEBIAN for a test, to see, what shows up there. In the threads, I posted, I don't see this serial thing neither. So, don't worry

This is what I see in Terminal window:

companion compgen complete composite
compare compiz compopt composite.im6
compare.im6 compiz-decorator compose

Have successfully started Companion in terminal and executed the read/write FW procedure that runs and terminated without errors or warnings. The Taranis is regretfully behaving just as described before. The FW file I have downloaded directly from the OpenTx website.

So dfu-util see the STM as root under linux.
Started companion as root and performed those steps in PART2 from here http://open-txu.org/home/special-intere ... d-taranis/

Then

Code: Select all

In any case it came up with the OpenTx window and the usual Throttle Warning; by pushing any button to continue it just starts all over again (stuck in a loop). Sometimes when switching OFF I have to remove the battery to switch the Tx off.

I would open the Taranis and check all cables and connections. At the moment, I have no other idea. Sorry!

Does this video come close to your situation? https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=2519125

Hi,

Have bumped the radio rather brutally but can't reproduce the behaviour of being sensitive to shakes and bumps triggering a reboot. Will open the Taranis and see if I can find any explanations.

Anyway I am grateful for your efforts in helping me solving this. Will be back when I have something to report.

Hi,
My Taranis x9d Plus is now once more in working order ! :D

What I have done is the following: upon opening the radio I visually and mechanically checked all connectors; then unlocked the two flexible and wide (pcb) cables from their connectors and carefully wiped the cable ends with an electro contact cleaning fluid, re-connected the flat cables and re-assembled the radio. Finally flashed a 'freshly' downloaded FW (v2.0.20) from the Companion in the Radio OFF mode after confirming that in Terminal window my PC (UBUNTU 14.04) see the Taranis+ (running as root). SUCCESS!! :D :D Many thanks.

A warning regarding removing and re-plugging the flexible connectors in a Taranis X9D PLUS. ALWAYS remove the battery before doing this. One of them carries the battery voltage and, if plugged in slightly out of alignment, this can be connected to the 3.3V power signal destroying the processor (don't ask!).

They could have designed it a bit better I guess. At least they could have improved it in later batches of the radio.. :(
