Aileron stick bug ?

Post by Oldtimer »

My question relates to a Taranis X9D Plus, Mode 1
Firmware OPENTX-X9dp-v2.0.9.2-eu
The normal output is -100% to +100% when a stick is moved to its full range.
(as it can be checked on the "Channel Monitor").
The problem is that my Aileron stick has an abnormal sensitivity : 100 % is obtained (on both sides) as soon as the stick reaches about half range.
Moving the stick further has no more effect. The channel "saturates" at 100 %.
In other terms, the useful range of the aileron stick is reduced.
The problem remains when programming a new model.
Could I have done a mistake ?
Before trying to update the firmware, I would like to hear if this this problem is known.
Thank you in advance.

I think you need to calibrate the sticks. I don't have a Taranis but stick calibration shoud be somewhere in General Settings..

+1 for the calibration!

Taranis stick calibration

Remember to do the knobs and sliders as well as the sticks!

Once done, you shouldn't need to touch it again unless you physically move or change any of the internal pots.

Thank you, Joao and Pete.
Yes the sticks and the knobs have been calibrated, according to the instructions. It plays with peanuts, in fact, compared with the "big" phenomenon I'm dealing with, since half of the aileron (= channel 2 for mode 1 Tx) travel is a dead zone.
I hope it will be fixed by an update, if no explaination.
All the best !

On the main screen are two square boxes with 'telltales' in showing the stick positions. When you move the aileron stick, does the aileron telltale follow the stick , only reaching the side when the stick does, or does it reach the side when the stick is half way?

This is precisely the kind of thing you would see if the sticks had not been calibrated. Calibration is not just a matter of "peanuts" but of "big" errors too. Don't dismiss it as though it were irrelevant.

Do the calibration again. Then if you still have the error it would seem you have a bad pot on the aileron stick.

I had the same happening to me on my 9x radio. They swapped 2 wires on one of the pots when they built the radio at the factory..

Also, please remember there are various processes that take place between the stick input and a channel output. For example, if the weight in the mixer is set to 200% you would see the effect you are describing. This is why I hae asked the question I posted above, to check the stick itself.

Easiest way would be to just create a new model and see if it still does the same problem..

Good point! I had to sort out a Taranis for a mate on Friday - he was only getting travel on one side of the stick. He had inadvertently set up a mix on one side only which subtracted the movement from itself! Don't ask me how he managed that, but clearing the mix solved the problem!

You are right, mates ! I was convinced that the calibration had been properly done. IT WAS NOT for channel 2 ! As quoted by Daedalus66, it produced a big error. I was wrongly induced to disregard it since the other channels were perfect. Thanks once more to all of you, Daedalus, Joao, Pete and Mike !

hi there,
I'm just wondering if you guys could give me a help with that.
I bought a taranis plus off Bangood as my first radio to play with a micro quad. The first thing I've done was the firmware upgrade, routine check and calibration so I could have my first fly, but then I notice that my aileron was acting bit weird and couldn't have a stable fly, my knowledge till that point with taranis was near 0, I've checked the inputs, mixer and outputs weight and offset and they were 100 and 0 respectively, then I checked the channels monitor and analog output and they were showing a minimal of -69.7 and a maximum of 100, (something wrong!!) calibrate the channels and nothing, created different models and didn't change, I assigned the aileron to a different channel (other than CH2) no change, I verified all outputs set to mid 1500, min and max -100 to 100 was ok, I checked the box to use "extended limits" didn't change, I even flash the firmware 2.1.6 (I'm using the 2.1.9) I thought it could be a firmware bug, but was the same, and now I'm running out of ideas (which are not many I'm sure) and I hope you could give your thoughts about... I post a video of the radio showing what happening if you may want to have a look, I will be really thankful

Looks like your stick simply isn't properly calibrated.

I've tried many times, watched different videos on YouTube showing how, tried even using different firmware and nothing, today I will try open and see if there is any loose cable inside
