Simple Mods for Taranis

Post by Rob Thomson »

So.. I thought I would start a thread on some of the mods I have made on my Taranis.

1. Speaker Upgrade
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 4395296881

This is a slighly larger speaker than stock. Replacing it allows you to simply get a better base response - with an overall less tinny sounding TX!

2. Secraft Transmitter Stick Ends
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261252517633? ... 1439.l2649

I normally use a tray when flying. These 'long' stick ends are superb when flying in 'pinch mode'

3. Safe Throttle Cut / Latching Switch
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/produ ... ku=SW03162

I have replaced my 'throttle cut switch (back left) with one of these. The switch is a latching switch. You have to pull it out to move it. IMHO this is a whole lot safer!

4. Latching+Momentary On-Off-(On)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120791882785? ... 1439.l2649

I have replaced 2 of my switches with these units. They are quite clever.
Essentially, you get a 3POS switch, but one side is MOMENTARY/SPRING LOADED like the trainer.

I like this for triggering alerts. So..

OFF
ON1 -> VARIO ON
ON2 MOMENTARY -> PLAY CURRENT ALTITUDE

Like the stick ends. :) They are screaming out to have a push button or switch to be added to the end. Sorry 'thumbies' this space sure has better uses, other than some spikey bit for your thumbs.

I've been seeing thumb stick ends getting bigger and bigger at the field. At this rate there may be room for a big button inset in them? One nice think about always being a pinch flyer is I'm not used to having my thumb on the stick ends or at least not using much pressure. So yes, a switch on the end or in the stick shaft would work great for me.
I passed around a Kraft singlestick modified for 2.4g and everyone trying it used their thumb on the big stick end and asked me where rudder control was. I just laughed and said ask the pinch flyers in the room as they were older flyers and knew.
That and adjusting rudder trim!

I'm a pinch hold flyer and I always use a tray (or the tray adaptor with my Mux 3030). I haven't used my Taranis in anger yet (though I have been angry with it :) See my self inflicted H/W problem) but it might be easier if the so-called slider controls on each side had the lever part pointing upwards. Has anyone tried that? I will be using an MRM tray I used to use with my Futaba transmitter.

I don't like these solutions for the sliders from any of the transmitter brands what I have tried (and there is a lots of them ;) ). I'd prefer more like a disc or a wheel on the side of the radio but as far as I know, there is no manufacturer which has done this. I mean similar wheel like in a normal radio which has that analog wheel for tuning the station. Like pic. behind the link below.

That would be the best solution. For me atleast. :) I have been thinking, could I re-invent the wheel and mod something like that for Taranis. The Taranis sliders are the worst of the worstest... not happy with them.

The only problem with simple knobs instead of sliders is that you don't know where they're set. The ones on the Mux 3030/4040 are prefect for me. You can tell be feel exactly how much flap or whatever you've applied and there's a handy stop you can set for known intermediate positions.

The Taranis ones at least have an indication by feel of their position.

After opening up my Taranis 2 times, first time to have a look and second time for a switch mod, the 2 top posts where the case screws go into cracked already, so I used the 9X upgraded screw pack sold by Smartieparts. The posts are nice and wide, so no problems drilling. There will be more mods in the future, so also the need for opening it up a few more times ;-)

Carefully you don't over tighten!

To avoid cracking posts, insert scree, then turn in reverse to allow the screw to find its old cuts... Then slowly righten up, without over tightening.

I have not broken a post since using this technique.

Rob, indeed this is the only way to go ... I failed to do that and cracked them, so I decided to change all 6 case screws. I you are careful or never open the Taranis up, just use the stock screws.

Lucky I was thought that technique when I first bought my radios.. never damaged a post till now and you know how many times I open my radios ;) :D

I think the most important is to not overtighten the screws.. What I do is to just screw them until they stop rotating free, and then just turn a a little more. Something like half a turn. just until the screw offers some resistence..

Unfortunately the damage was already done with mine ... One moment of weakness, unattention and it broke, no major deal though
