Buddy box / trainer settings

Post by rcgyuk »

Have started setting up models so I can use a buddy box with my Taranis, and really pleased with the ease of use.

However I ran into something I can't figure out.

I have 2 spare TX's, one is mode 1, one is mode 2. I fly mode 2, throttle on left stick.

Is there a way I can switch between my 2 slave transmitters, without having to manually change the channel assignment on the trainer page in the Taranis every time.

That way I can buddy some one up on my model, whichever mode they fly in.

Something like trainer profile 1, and trainer profile 2, and you could select one or other with a simple check box, but not both at the same time.

What are you using as the budy box?

You could change the channel assignments on the buddy box to make things consistent?

well, I think that equal radios in different modes still send the channels in the same order??

Depends on what channels are mapped to which stick/output.

E.g. tear, raet etc..

yes but if both tx's have the same channel assignment I think the stick mode shouldn't matter.
Normally you change the stick mode but the tx should keep the same channel order..

True. But if the buddy boxes are different makes / channel orders?

Guess that needs to be clarified. :)

the two buddy boxes are JR X3810 and JR 388S.

The JR 388S is the mode 1 one. I don't mind setting up a default model in that one if I have to, but thought I could do all the settings in Taranis

Trainer settings in opentx are 'global' and not profile driven. So not at this time :)

but don't all JR radios have the same channel order?
I think the only thing is that the calibration will have to be done everytime you change radios..
Maybe profiles for different radios on trainer port would be a nice cool idea ;)

Agreed, but I am asking if I can have 2 global versions, and switch between them easily.

If not, then I have to find if I can alter the channels the raw stick output from the 388S output to.

The X3810 throttle stick on the left for example outputs on channel 1, and in taranis, trainer setup, throttle expects channel 1 as the input.

If I swop buddy boxes, I have to get the 388S to output right hand up and down stick movement to channel 1, or I have to change the taranis to expect throttle on channel 3.

But if they are 2 JR radios they should already both output throttle on CH1. Check the 388S' mode setting in the software, it may well be badly configured.

On the Taranis there's no way to store 2 profiles, BUT you can ignore the trainer settings altogether and assign the channels directly in the mixer with the PPM1-8 inputs.

At the moment, they are both mode 2, I want to convert the 388s to mode 1, so I have one of each, should have mentioned that earlier

Ahhh, and on that one can't you change the mode also in software? isn't there an option for it?

A quick search reveals that the radio indeed does have a mode setting.
So swap the springs, AND change the mode setting. Channel numbers will then be the same on both radios.

Just to confirm: Any properly set up JR (or Spektrum) radio uses the TAER channel order, regardless of stick mode.

One thing to watch out for is that 100% throw on JR/Spektrum corresponds to 80% throw on OpenTX. You may find that you need to increase throw on the slave transmitters to 125% to get similar control action.
