My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Hi all,
First of all I want to thank everybody on this forum for the fabulous support and guides you provide for our new toy.
Got my Taranis yesterday. Love it, works great. Display looks great, Smooth sticks.
I created some voice files an loaded them to the memory card SOUNDS/en/. They show up in the list and I can select them but they do not play.
I created them using my Macintosh running the latest OS X version. I converted the file to a WAV mono U-LAW with Audacity and also tried Switch. I did exactly as in Scott's video. Only difference as I see it is I'm on a Mac.
The custom switches I programmed (to trigger my voices) are ok I selected a original voice file and that plays fine.
I included a zip file of the voices, may somebody can look at them and tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Feel free to use them. (They are flight modes for the APM board.)
Thanks
Juerg

Hi,
Your files are 44kHz, they need to be 32kHz

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Hmm... We need an FAQ and a revised video mentioning the sample rate(s) needed

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Thanks Kilrah for the quick answer.
Unfortunately does the sample rate change the pitch and the voices I created are no longer usable, except you like a deep mans voice:)
However, I know now what to look for and can create new ones.

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Any decent sound processing software should be able to change sampling rate without altering the sound (usually Resample). You probably just used the wrong option
Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
With Audacity the sample rate/project rate setting is on the bottom left. Set it to 32000

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Oki Doki,
Managed to get it working. Again! Thanks to the super support I get from the OpenTX / Taranis community!
OK, here is how I did it on my Mac OS X
1. http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php to create the voice file.
2. Switch http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html to convert the ATT voice files from 16kHz to 32kHz. (when I did the 16 kHz to 32kHz conversion in Audacity it changes the voice….) Conversion settings - Custom, 32000 Sample Rate
These converted files would still not play in the Taranis….
3. Now I loaded the voices in Audacity and simple exported them with the format Scott uses in his video. WAV(Microsoft), U-Law
Sounds complicated but it worked.
I included the APM Mode voice files I'm using. Feel free to use them.
And for fun. I created some different Taranis Welcome voices. They go into SOUNDS/en/system and replace the tada.wav
To much fun playing with my Taranis

I put a banner on the Audacity video and explanation of the changes in the description.

Where/how did you create that voice. What program do you use to make the file?

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Were you able to save the voice file from the demo site or did you record it with a microphone?
Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
you can configure audacity to record internally. then start recording and after start the voice..

Darn it! I've spent an hour trying every possible configuration of audio host and input device but am not getting any input to Audacity from Windows. System volumes and Audacity record volume are ~80%. I start recording and then the voice but nada. Any suggestions?

AFAIK not all PCs/sound cards support recording their own output...

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
You can use 32kHz, 16kHz, or 8kHz in the Taranis. The ATT voices now work directly as generated/downloaded because Ulaw or Alaw is no longer necessary - you can now use PCM wav - which is what ATT saves as.WantToPlay wrote: 2. Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
I get the best quality voice recording by putting a mic in my digital video camera and recording with it. I then toss the video and use the audio track.G550Ted wrote:Darn it! Ted, see if the option Stereo Mix shows up as in my picture..
If it does select it..
If it still doesn't work you will have to enable it in your sound card config..

Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
OK. Three more hours of mostly ridding my 'puter of some unwanted junk created by a pgm I loaded as a possible workaround to record some sounds, then some more fiddling with my audio panel and I now have it working!
Thanx to everyone and especially João for the help.

Audacity & Acapela, so easy many thanks
Re: My own voices won't be played by Taranis
Hi all.
I recorded some voice notifications myself with Audacity, and on uploading them to my Taranis yesterday.......I found some weren't listed in the sound file on the Tx screen, when trying to apply them to my model's setups.
It then dawned on my that the "names" I'd given some of them were and might be too long !!!.
On shortening the names, that sorted the issue.....and all work OK now.

Recording on the Mac
The Mac command tools include a very nifty "say" program. I've tried using it like this:
say -o ~/loiter.wav --data-format=ulaw@32000 --channels=1 -v Victoria "Changed to Loiter Mode."
It's great because with a command line you can create many wav files very quickly using any voice on your Mac saying anything you want. The problem is it doesn't work. I've compared the files created here which don't work to those from Audacity which do work and I can't tell the difference. I've examined them with several different tools and all of the header and codec info seems the same - WAV, MU-LAW, mono, 32000hz and 8 bit.
Attached is a sample file I created. Can anyone tell me why it won't play? I'd be grateful.

That would be a pretty amazing way to quickly create all sounds with a simple script. Considering that Apple has some nifty voices from Nuance (you can download them in System Preferences -> Dictation and Speech -> System Voice -> Customize). Samantha (Siri) and Serena are pretty decent high quality voices. Hope you can solve the issues.

I agree. I think this will be the best way yet to create audio clips. Just gotta figure out why my files won't play.jams wrote:That would be a pretty amazing way to quickly create all sounds with a simple script. Could someone kindly let me know the name and path of the Startup sound?
Also FYI.... do not use more than 10 characters or else it will not show up in the OS.
cheers:)
