Probs flashing a new 9x board

Post by stotty1111 »

Hi all,
Just rebuilt a 9x with a new board, installed a smartieparts piece to facilitate the flashing, the rebuiltnunit works a standard 9x without probs.
Connected up to flash, using win 10, device manager indicates usb connection is there and connected, when I try to burn to the board get the following message

avrdude.exe: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer. 1
avrdude.exe: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude.exe done. Thank you.

I remember a similar thread some time ago, can anyone point me at said thread or assist now - my pc skillare average, so a little tlc please! :-)

Make sure the smartieparts board's pogo pins are aligned with the pads on the 9x mainboard..
Also, make sure there is no solder on the pads. If there is, remove it with desoldering braid (solder wick).
Try cleaning the pads with alcohol.
Is your radio a so called "V2"? The " V1" version has the SCK pad in the wrong place. Could you please post a good resolution picture of the mainboard? We would also like to see what processor is on it.. How old is your radio?

For testing DO NOT try to write the firmware. Do an eeprom read. That shouldn't mess your radio's fuses up if something is wrong.
By the way, NEVER, BUT NEVER use the -F option as suggested by avrdude. That can brick the processor..

Yes!
You mention using a new board. Recent spare boards and radios appear to have a processor that is NOT made by Atmel on them. This appears to be not fully compatible and doesn't run er9x or openTx.

ndeed the board appears to be a mk 1 the sck pad aligns with resistor 6, and the chips is an atmel, I have another board with a Green chip, the pad on that aligns with resistor 5 - I assume this board cannot be flashed with eepe? is there a work round solution?

Well, it won't be solderless anymore.. You need to solder a wire from the SCK on the smartieparts board to the resistor that connects to the right SCK pin of the atmega chip, which is pin 11..

so, if I remove the sprung sck pin pin and solder a wire from the hole to the sck pad on the mainboard that should work?
the green chipped board is not flashable with eepe?

You can perhaps try to solder a wire without removing the pogo pin? Just make sure it doesn't touch the other pad..
Don't try immediately to write the firmware.. Use eepe to try to READ the eeprom.. If successful, then you can try to flash it.

I don't really know about the green chip, but it will not work correctly with any open source firmware.. There are differences..

It looks like the PC can't find your UsbAsp programmer. Did you install the drivers for it?
Also try connecting the programmer to an USB 2 port, if you have one..

Not sure, the fact is that avrdude couldn't find the UsbAsp programmer.. Did you try a USB 2 port?
What OS are you running on your PC? Windows? which version?

Once again, thanks all for the help!!
