Numeric servo output jitter on Turnigy 9x with 9xtreme board and frsky dht

Post by NvdGoorbergh »

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a secondhand turnigy 9x because I wanted to start with the hobby and this thing was priced really well.
I didn't have a battery at the time so i couldn't check if it was working as intended. Because i really (really, really) wanted my turnigy to talk I bought myself an smartieparts 9xtremeboard and build that in. Next step was that I build in the frsky dht module inside. Even then I had no battery to check if it was working. :?

When I finally got a battery and plugged in it it booted up and immidiatly gave me a throttle warning. Even though the throttle was down.
I played with it for a bit and was really statisfied at that moment. Dind't really understand al that was going on but it worked!
After a few days playing with it and hooking it up to freeplayer and liftoff i noticed some jerkey movement. At first I thought it was as if the game had implemented wind or something. I decided to look better into the transmitter and found an info screen for Numeric Servo Output. On this screen you see the numbers of the gimbals I suppose? The thing is that these numbers are jittering. they ar not stable on one certain value. They change.

Is there a problem with the pots on the gimbals? Did I make a mistake with connecting the frsky module? Or do I need another er9x version for that? I saw a frsky version somewhere on the webs.. Im sorry if i'm asking stupid questions but it's not feeling right.

PLease let me know!
With kind regards,
Nick van de Goorbergh

Please try going to the Hardware menu and set filter to OSMP. See if that helps.

To enable the hardware menu just turn the radio ON while holding the left horizontal trim to the left for a second or so.

And for the very first, calibrate (radio setup menu) the sticks, if you didn't it already

It is less now I switched to OSMP. The jittering is 0.2. sometimes 0.3. I am not sure if this is normal because I don't have any reference material.

Since you have a possibly old Tx (bought second hand!), this amount of jitter is not unusual. 0.3 represents only a 1.5uS change in the servo pulse width. Most servos won't move for that amount of change.
If you don't like this jitter around the centre, you will also find options in the hardware menu to set a "deadband" for the centre of the sticks. Setting these to a value of around 5 may well remove the jitter seen on the main display.

Numeric servo output jitter on Turnigy 9x with 9xtreme board and frsky dht

Post by Daedalus66 »

Just to confirm that that is about what I see. I set deadband of 3 to 5 under Hardware (access by holding rudder trim to the left while turning on the transmitter). That pretty much eliminated the jitter. The amounts involved are much less than the resolution of my servos.

The thing is I don't use the transmitter (yet) on a real quad, only on simulators and games like liftoff.
When I switched to OSMP and had set de deadband to 5 the jittering was mostly gone but then the game was unplayable.
Which was weird. When I did a straight take off it felt like the quad was pulled to the left by a few gusts of wind.
So then I reverted al my changes, the jittering on screen of the 9x came back but then the quad in game was super controlable. No more sudden gusts of wind. Im not sure. I think I'll just have to build myself a real quad and be certain that it works :D ..

Yes you have it. But can you access it? :)

Maybe you can, but that would mean you have an older version of the firmware installed..

ow really? Yes I can acces it. I was planning on checking the firmware tonight because yesterday I couldnt find a mini usb cable :S.
I was kind of lost in al the firmware options.
I think I need the frsky one right? because of the dht module?

If you have done the frsky telemetry mod yes. If you only have the DHT connected without doing the telemetry mod, then no.

I have just realized you have a turnigy 9x.
On recent versions of er9x the hardware menu is hidden. To enable it you must turn the radio ON while holding both horizontal trims away from the center. Do it only for a second or so after you turned the power switch ON.
The hardware menu will now show up in Radio Setup.

maybe a stupid question but what adds the telemetry mod? I thought that the dht module was able to send information about the quad to the remote.
There is also a cable running from the 9xtreme board which says frsky. I thought that cable was for the module and was needed to get telemetry?

But it turns out I need to do more?

Oh, you have a 9xtreme board? Ok then you don't need any telemetry mod.

And to enable the hardware menu hold left horizontal trim to the left for about a second or two while turning the radio ON. I think you got me confused here :)

You should update to the latest. ;)
Get it here:

www.er9x.com

You want ersky9x for 9xtreme. I think you might also have to update the bootloader..

That's not quite the latest, it's one of the test versions. To avoid confusion in future test versions put a 'p' in front of the ervision number. I did the official release of r218 in early January this year (2016).

Turn the radio ON while holding both horizontal trims away from each other to enter maintenance mode.. then select update bootloader. Select the latest r218 release version of the firmware that you already have on the sd card. Press menu long and confirm to update the bootloader. Wait till is finished. Press exit long.

Re: Numeric servo output jitter on Turnigy 9x with 9xtreme board and frsky dht

It has nothing to do with the opening post so not sure if I can continue or not.

But what happens is as follows. I started the transmitter in the firmware setting, then connected the usb to the 9xtreme board and then I could see the files on the sd card. So i clicked to the WELCOME.wav file and replaced it with my own file.
The I disconected and started up again. The splash screen animation now was stuttering, the audio was not there and even though my switches where not in the default position it skipped that as well. The screen was just switching between an on and off state every 3 or four seconds.
If I tried to put the transmitter to off it just stood on the exit screen with sometimes a message about eeprom being busy? (not sure what the exact message was). So I disconnected the battery and put the old WELCOME file back and then it started like it supposed to do.

I tried multiple settings. mono, stereo, 2200khz 1600 khz but al gave the same responce..
Maybe I am not supposed to change the audio via that way?
But Im not keen on opening the remote everytime I want a different voice :P.

Your file needs to be 16Khz 16 bit.
But still, the radio shouldn't do what it did.. :o
