9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
Hello my fellow 9x'rs...
I have been experiencing some problems and would like a sanity check if possible if someone could go over the setup here.
I have been following this image...
and came up with this...
Clean
The only thing I did different from my knowledge is add the 470ohms resistors as I have seen you require these for protection to the module when programming?
In order to get Telemetry working with FrSky XJT, I assume I need the Rx connected to the front of the XJT Module on the Signal Pin for SPort, right?
Do I require FrSky-Lite Converter
Thanks for your help...

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
You do need to invert the SPort signal. A FrSky Lite will do the job. The XJT SPort signal is already connected to pin 5 of the module connector. This means you may connect internally from that pin to the FrSky Lite. You only need the one signal, unlike the DJT.
After inverting, the SPort signal goes to pin 3 of the processor.

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
Thanks Mike, regarding the one cable... if this radio were to be used with Mavlink or Ardupiolot, would the same be true?
Would I require inverter or straight through is right?
Say I setup the XJT in D Mode. Then I would use the Tx/Rx side (rs232?)

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
With the XJT you always use pin 5 regardless of mode, and need the inverter.
For ardupilot that of course depends on the radio modules you're going to use.

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
Thanks Kilrah/Mike, appreciate the information.
I guess then, If I want Telemetry, which I do... and really all I want is my 9x to utilize all the wonderful information from APM/ArduPilot.
I am running er9x(mavlink flavour) or openTx(mavlink).
The problem is that I can't any flavour of something working on my 9x with Mavlink.
If I use ULRS that is just PPM with pass-thru of Mavlink for Telemetry (tried and tried and can't get the 9x to display Mavlink)
If I use XJT and X8R then that is FrSky with FrSky_Coverter (tried and tried, there are SPort solutions out there to get Telemetry) but the radio with Converter has MegaSound9x_Serial and that version of er9x doesn't support Mavlink or the data (yet).
At this point.. I have been trying to get direct connection involved of just bypassing the Tx/Rx and connected APM/ArduPilot to the Radio directly... I have not been able to get any flavour working.
I guess I am wondering if my setup is okay... with the 220ohms which I need for re-routing the Pin2/Pin3 --> Pin41/42.
and the 470ohms resistors to protect the Pin2/Pin3 as well.
Bottom line, if I use FrSky at all.. need the converter regardless.
I would feel much more comfortable if I can get direct connection working with some version of firmware that can read Mavlink. I have yet to be successful on that front.

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
Happy to report some progress....
I couldn't wait on getting a FrSky Lite Converter from HK or other so I found an diagram on the WWW for SPort/XJT Signal Inverter.
Credit to....
After building it...
I used a NPN 2N2222A instead of the BC337-40 ( I read somewhere they were equivalent )
With Power/GND/SPort(Pin5)
I was able to get Telemetry....after connecting the Pin2/MOSI --> Mosi Line on the Signal Converter
Nothing crazy, just reassuring that Telemetry works on this radio... so the setup is fine, with signal inverter and previous setup.
Tomorrow... back to testing firmwares with Mavlink Support over SPort.

Just to confirm, do you get telemetry with the 9xtreme moded 9X through the pin 5, or one must connected the tx wire to sport?MikeB wrote:You do need to invert the SPort signal. Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
Yes, the 9Xtreme not only handles the SPort telemetry from pin 5 (it is the XJT that connects to pin 5), it also has a full SPort interface on the telemetry signal so can send data out on the telemetry pin. This means that "maintenance mode" works and allows you to update the XJT firmware and 'X' receivers and SPort sensors firmware.

Sorry, forgot to mention, yes its the XJT module.MikeB wrote:...(it is the XJT that connects to pin 5)...

So, no need to solder the tx wire to the pin5 from the inside?
Thx

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
You do need to connect the black wire from the 9Xtreme to pin 5 on the back board. You may, as shown a few posts above with the orange wire, solder to the large square pad that was the original FM antenna connector.

Re: 9X Telemetry Mod (Sanity Check)
Thanks.... its all sorted out and sold now... 1 radio less... 3 of which I want to get rid of one more and then buy the Horus or similar.
