I don't think there's a way unless you find a seller who agrees to take gimbals apart one by one from his stock to see what they are.
People have been reporting non amplified ones since a couple of months, yet I received a pair from FrSky last week and they were amplified.

why they have to take the gimbals apart? can't you see the PCB if you just look at the back of the gimbal?

Wouldn't measuring with an Ohm meter show it?
With pot only, you should see the total and partial resistance, but not with an amplified pot.

I saw several reports that sticks from t9hobbysport.com come without amplifiers.
I also got my sticks from there, and they are the ones without amps.

P.S. BTW, I still didn't get time to install my sticks and I don't really mind against 'amped' sticks. So if someone wants a guaranteed unamplified version - I can ship mine, and order another pair for myself. :) Not sure about shipping rates though, might be a bit more expensive than shipping it from a UK / US online store.

Suggestion - maybe could ask Aloft Hobbies (http://www.alofthobbies.com/contact) USA

and/or (http://www.t9hobbysport.com/contact-t9hobbysport) England.

Maybe they have the Replacement Taranis non-amplified Potentiometer in stock.

Just for my understanding: Do the amplified sticks not work in the 9X, while the unamplified do?

I think they both work the same. But easier to reverse them by just swapping the wires on the one with only the pots. I guess er9x has an option to do it by software too. But ny biggest concern is that the amplified gimbals might put some load on the already overloaded 9x voltage regulator.

I would agree that it could be a problem with the amplified versions. Could someone read off the number on the operational amplifier on the back of the pot, so we could get some idea of the current consumption on the unit or failing that measure the current that it takes?

Changing the regulator to the standard 7805 (as I have already done on both of my 9X's) is fairly easy to do. You could go mad and use a small switch mode PSU for the +5 Volt rail if you really want to. :)

3mA / pot at 5V, so 2mA more than the usual 5k pot.

Hi Flats 30,

My Amplified Angular Rotation Sensors or Potentiometer has: muRata A01316 Pboard Rev 0.2

Dose this help?

Upgrading the regulator sounds like a must do!, to help remove other possibilities for other components failures to happen.

Is there a documented Mod posted how-to upgrade the 9x power regulator?

I do not know how to do this upgrade.

Thanks Bob. The picture shows the way the 7805 regulator is fitted. Don't forget to lift the left hand leg of the old 78L05 regulator or cut the track as shown by the purple line. The picture was taken before the flux residues were removed.

I have another plan.. The voice module regulator can handle 800mA so, my plan is to remove the original 9x reg and feed the 5V from the module to the main board.

Re: Taranis Gimbals in a 9X

Post by preisedj »

I just installed the Taranis Gimbals in my Turnigy 9x running ER9x. I'm operate Mode 2. I changed the orientation of the left gimbal (throttle/rudder) by 180 degrees with the very minor trim as recommended on the forum to avoid an obstruction. The right gimbal was installed in the same orientation as the original 9x gimbal.
With this configuration, I had to reversed the operation in the ER9x software for rudder and aileron. All is well, except that now my trim direction for rudder and aileron is reversed. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks!

Hi Flaps 30, jhsa and every one,

It looks like l may need to purchase some 7805 regulator, I looked at some on line and there are to many
to choose from with different Maximum Output currents (Amperage's).

I think I would like to have a DC/DC, 5V / 5A 7805 regulator.

What do I really need, so to make sure there is good power to everything?

It looks like the Stock 9x Mainboard Regulator maybe a: CJ 78L05 5V / 100mA (or 0.1 amps)
9x Stock Mainboard CJ 78L05 Voltage Regulator <br />Maybe: 5v / 100mA
9x Stock Mainboard CJ 78L05 Voltage Regulator
Maybe: 5v / 100mA
:) Taranis Amplified 5K Pot: uses 3mA at 5V (is 2mA more than the usual 5k pot).
Taranis un-amplified 5K Pot: uses 1mA at 5V for the normal 5k Potentiometer.

jhsa » João have you made the changes to use your voice module regulator with 800mA, 5V Regulator to power your 9x mainboard?
If you have, could you post a photo of where you connected the + 5 Volts wire and the Ground wire to you 9x mainboard?
Stock 9x mainboard v2
Stock 9x mainboard v2
Is there any reason to why I could not use a BEC to power the 9x mainboard?

I am thinking of using a BEC the same way João plans to use his voice module regulator to power his 9x mainboard.

Hi preisedj,

Could you have accidentally Checked the Cross Trims in the General Edit of the Eeprom Model List?

I did not have this as a problem, not sure why it has changed for you.
I used the erSky9x firmware.

Have you updated to the newest er9x firmware?

How did you reverse the operation in er9x?
I'm asking as I don't understand why the trims are wrong.

Mike,
I got it figured out. It helps to download your latest test firmware that allows for stick reversal. Everything works perfectly.
My problem was that I just reversed the rudder and aileron setting.
Thanks for doing the firmware mods.

I need to check... My guess is around $20, but that's not proven by anything.
I have colleagues traveling from / to States from time to time (mostly to NJ). This way it will be a free delivery to US, and then a shipment within US shall be much cheaper (or maybe you could even meet somewhere f2f, if you happen to be nearby). But currently I cannot say when the next trip will be - we have a new 'cost reduction' program in the company...

Better contact me via PM - I may miss recent posts in this thread, but I should definitely see a PM!

I wonder why you decided to get it from US rather than from UK... They both start with a 'U', but the latter one is closer... :)

Simple. They weren't in stock and I wanted them yesterday ;)
Also I think shipping might be cheaper.
I also looked at it in Belgium but they dont accept PayPal. Only bank transfer I think. And that is a turn off for me. Anyway from aloft turned out to be even cheaper. Go figure.

Hugh! Why such a hurry? Do you have a plane up in the sky and a stick is failing, so you want to swap it and land safely? :)
jhsa wrote:Also I think shipping might be cheaper.
Yeah, that's a good point. Shipping rates in UK are quite high. Though, the pricing difference of shipping to my location either from UK or from US is not that big. :)
