well, prepare yourself for some continuity tests with the multimeter. Check that the pins that go to those buttons are well soldered and no shorts. I don't remember which pins but I think you have the schematic, right? each of those pins is normally connected to a resistor. with the tx OFF. put one probe of the multimeter on top of the pin without applying to much force, and the other probe on the resistor.. see if it measures zero ohms. Maybe Mike has better ideas..

It is possible to get the buttons not working if you don't get them lined up correctly when putting it all back together. Since the LEFT (+) button is working, you should be able to get to the DIAG screen LONG LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT. You can check what the switches and buttons and trims are doing there.

Here's an interesting possibility on that screen. Press and hold one of the trims, keep it pressed. Now, if you press any of the 6 main buttons, it should show up as a 0 changing to a (reverse video) 1, BUT the button operation will be blocked as the trim is overriding it. This means you won't exit the menu while checking.
Don't forget to put the trim setting back to the centre when you have finished.

what about to exit the DIAG screen you should have to press a combination of 2 buttons? Like menu and exit for example..

Re: BAD Press Button Switches / Replace 5V regulator

Post by bob195558 »

Hi Mike and João,

I opened up the 9x Radio, removed the SP Board and removed the screws from the 9x '2561 Mainboard and lifted it up so I could press the Button Switches directly.

I got all the plugs and other connection hocked up and power the 9x '2561 Radio up.

All the Button Switches worked, :D ...... but there is still an intermitting problem with some of them. :(
I believe these are dirty Switches!

Operating the switches this way works a lot better, ..... But still not 100%.

1) The MENU button worked about 95% of the time. Seems mostly normal.
2) The Exit button worked about 50% of the time. This Switch seems to have something wrong with it.
3) The Minus button worked about 80% of the time. This Switch had stuff coming out of the side of it.

Some Options to fix this problem:
I could try the cleaning them with CRC QD Electronic Cleaner.
or
I could replace them from the 12 volt fried stock 9x Mainboard.

Bob :)

You could also measure them with the multimeter and find out if they measure near zero ohm when depressed.. Then you will know if they're good or not.

Hi João,

With 9x '2561 Mainboard reinstalled:

Down Switch: shorted when pressed, 0 ohms (GOOD) :)
Up Switch: shorted when pressed, 0 ohms (GOOD) :)
- switch: open- before and after switch pressed (bad) The ohms reading keep changing when pressed, not consistence, keeps changing. (BAD)
+ switch: shorted when pressed, 0 ohms (GOOD) :)
Menu switch: shorted when pressed, 0 ohms (GOOD) seems to be working now. :o :)

Exit switch: open- before and after switch pressed (bad) is not working at all now.

All soldered points in pretty good shape?

Some time ago I had an issue with a bad soldering point.
When the board was in place there where contact problems.
Outside enclosure, the board worked great.

The cause:
when the board was screwed in place it was slightly bent,
what led to contact problems on one leg of an integrated circuit.

So a strong magnifying glass is always good to have...

(just in case the exchange of switches does not solve your problem)

:D Hi Mike, João and everyone,

I first tried the CRC QD Electronic Cleaner and it did help to fix one switch.

The other two switches, I had to replace.
I used Chip Quik to help with removing these Switches, it was a big help. :D

Then reinstalled 9x '2561 Mainboard and all the switches are working well now. :D

I did the 5V Regulator and it is working like it should. :D

Later today I will add a new SmartieParts 9x TelemetrEZ Board. :)

Its looking well.

Bob :D :D

Re: Replace 5V regulator

:( Hi,

An old problem came back after I installed a New 9x TelemetrEZ Board into this FlySky 9x '2561 Radio.
(viewtopic.php?f=95&t=3819&start=90#p73987)

The back left Throttle Switch and the right side Aileron Switch, are activated all the time.
Makes no difference, when switching these switches forward and/or backwards again.

To review: When I moved this 9x TelemetrEZ Board, that was in the 9x Radio which I had the Wrong 5V Regulator Upgrade Mod Mishap to a Turnigy 9x Radio
and when powering these two together, I had this problem of the Throttle Switch and the Aileron Switch, being activated all the time.
When I moved a known working 9x TelemetrEZ Board from my 9x Radio to this Turnigy 9x Radio, it was OK. (No Problem).
So my thinking was, the burned 9x TelemetrEZ Board was a bad and I would not see this problem again.

So today when I installed a New 9x TelemetrEZ Board into this repaired, upgraded
FlySky 9x '2561 Radio, this old Problem has returned.

Note: This problem has happened with two different 9x Radios and with two different 9x TelemetrEZ Boards.
The 9x TelemetrEZ Board that was involved with the 5V Regulator Mishap did work correctly before the 5V Regulator Mishap.
This second time,.... seeing this problem is with a new 9x TelemetrEZ Board.

1) Is there something, ..... that I may have done,...... to cause this problem when installing the 9x TelemetrEZ Boards?

2) ......? Not sure where to start at this time.

Any suggestions to where I should start to troubleshoot for this problem?

I have another new 9x TelemetrEZ Boards and I planed to use this one to replace the 9x TelemetrEZ Board from my 9x Radio
that I installed into one of our RC Group Member's Turnigy 9x Radio.

With the original '64 processor you had to choose to flash either the standard er9x, or, if you had done the telemetry mod (or fitted the TeZ board) you had to flash er9x-frsky. The '128 and '2561 versions have all the code, but you need to tell them where to find the switches.
In the RADIO SETUP menu there is an option:
FRSKY MOD DONE
Set this to ON, and your switches should be back working.

Thank you Mike.

It corrected the problem. :D

I was just thinking before I saw your fix to this problem, that the PC Computers, most of the time the hardware is needed to be installed before the software is installed.
In this way the software is able to find where the hardware is as the software is installing.

I re-tried the Burned 9x TelemetrEZ Board, in my Turnigy 9x Radio with er9x-FrSky firmware and it still had the same symptoms of Throttle Switch and Aileron Switch are activated all the time.
I would speculate, that the symptoms are the same, because the 9x TelemetrEZ Board with the burned chip, is the same as turning the TelemetrEZ Board off.

All the 9x Radios in our small RC Group are upgraded and working again ! :D

Thanks again Mike!

I thought about auto-detecting the TeZ board, but decided it could cause more problems that it solves.

Hi to all and thanks for all the informations on this forum !
I've just replaced the M64A with atmega2561 on my 9x, but when trying to set the fuses :

=================================================================================
AVRDUDE démarré
C:/Program Files/eePe/avrdude.exe -c stk500 -p m2561 -B 1000 -P com3 -u -U lfuse:w:0xDE:m -U hfuse:w:0xD1:m -U efuse:w:0xFC:m
=================================================================================

avrdude.exe: stk500v2_command(): command failed
avrdude.exe: stk500_2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude.exe: stk500v2_program_enable(): bad STK600 connection status: Unknown (0x64)
avrdude.exe: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude.exe done. Thank you.

=================================================================================
AVRDUDE terminé - code de sortie 1

It's the same if i have no chip connected.
I have the "mysmartusb light" to flash, and everything seems to be soldered correctly...
The same thing happens with -B 100 and no -B.
Seems i won't be flying this week-end...

Any idea ?

Check the connections to the chip. How are you powering the chip? with the programmer or the radio itself?

The chip is powered by the programmer at 5V, it was OK with M64 before changing it.
I'm afraid the 2561 is bad or burnt at mounting it.
Should there be activity on the 16MHz crystal when the board is powered ? I have 0V on oscilloscope.

The default fuse settings use the internal oscillator, so until you get the fuses set the won't be any oscillation on the crystal.

Thanks Mike for the information.
Kilrah : the programmer is working, I finally found that the 47µF capacitor on the RST line had a problem (bringing RST from 5v to 1,5V)
After replacing it I could set the fuses : it's OK.
But when I try to flash :

Try adding "-B 10" to the avrdude command line. Slowing it down might be just the trick to make it work.

It's the same with "-B 10", and the transmitter turns off when pressing long menu...
I did the sound9x and frsky mods, but I'm not lucky with this mod, perhaps I damaged the card.
It won't be safe to fly with it, think I'll buy the 9XR pro. Will my eepe model files be compatible ?

Does it reboot? Also does it go off when you keep pressing the trims very fast? You might have to put a 1k resistor in line with the trims and the buttons.

You might have a bad version of avrdude, I remember of one not supporting the 2560 correctly. The error occurs at a boundary, which is quite typical of such problems. Or maybe it was the programmer firmware.

I would give version 5.x a try if you use version 6.x

No, I was using version 5.11.
But you're right with avrdude : I've just tried version 6.0.1 & 6.1, flashing is OK, no error at all, but the transmitter doesn't boot at all !
I don't have trim problems, I did the mod described here (analog/dig ground mod), but the transmitter shuts down with no reboot when "long menu".

Same thing with "long right" : it shuts down when trying to access model setup.
"long left" and other keys OK.
