M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
Hi again, I just got my new M64 and new cristals, installed them, checked every little thing and tried to program my 9x.
I get this warning: avrdude.exe: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for USBASP firmware update
my old 9x programs, reads/writes no prob at all. this new one does not boot.
I got a perfect 16Mhz sine ware on the crystal output, I've got all voltages correct. I've removed the reset line capacitor (for testing at least) I've been wondering around the board and could not get to a solution. any thoughts? I've tried to reduce the programmer speed, no luck either

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
I get the same warning everytime but everything works fine. If shouldn't affect anything, it's just a question of the firmware on the usbasp.
Did you set the fuses with eepe/companion?
If there is an error, it should be somewhere else in the avrdude messages, please post the entire result.

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
I removed mi M64 with 4 big blobs of some heavy temp solder. heated all 4 sides alternating from end to end and pulled the M64 out.
re-soldering is easy as pie. I did drag soldering but that could be hard for newbies. the best solution is to use some no-clean solder flux or solder paste.
hope you don't have the same problem cos' mine does not work yet.

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
I did not replace a processor (yet). Next week if I receive my m128s by then
I was saying that the "warning: avrdude.exe: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for USBASP firmware update" is common, I have it everytime I flash my 9xs, and it should not cause trouble.
Doesn't that post belong in another thread by any chance?

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
that post was on the right thread. you were just to quick
I've checked the fuses. I write them anyway. I checked the voltages... I've been checking it all... I just can't find the problem...

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
plus, It also oscillates at 16Mhz with a 'perfect' sine wave (low distortion)
Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
Hmm... Are you sure you don't have a short somewhere between pins?
Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
on the pins no. I've checked that with a lens and a meter (did 1 year SMD soldering for prototypes and another year soldering and reworking on a factory... I got a 400€ soldering station and lots of patience... I have a problem... but it is 'away' from the M64...
I don't know were to look.
I don't get any single glitch on any output of the M64. it simply does not start... My old radio does the same warning but programs/works perfectly...

Have you programmed the fuse bits at all? The default for a new processor is to use the internal oscillator at 1MHz. Because of this, the fuses need to be programmed with quite a slow SCK on the programmer.

I could try again with an external clock but... when I read the fuses over AVRdude (win AVR version) they are correct... I will try tonight and get back to this... that board will work. (part from that, no one stepped in to sell a new or old board... )
Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
well... noting for trying with the external oscillator... I must take of the crystal in order to get the controller to "stop" and listen to my external clock...
will post again upon results.

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
read/write fuses on external osc: check.
flash firmware on external 1Mhz clock: check.
do all the same with onboard 16Mhz clock: check. (oscilating stable)
but got no boot... I can't get the problem... don't even know what to search now. I'm about to forget the stock PCB and try to buy other stock PCB.

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
on external 1Mhz clock I could clearly see data flowing to the LCD data lines
on 16Mhz I can't see... but could be a measuring problem.

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
on 16Mhz external clock I can clearly see data flowing into the LCD. still no signal of life. the LCD is "OK" (its a test-only LCD since it has broken/dead lines)
I'm checking the ppm lines ans schematic... I suspect I have a problem on the external LCD capacitors...

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
ppm signal out check (seems OK)
one LCD data line not OK, seems to be the problem... gonna try to solve... will report back soon.

Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
broken resistors: check. finding spares... ongoing (I actually like talking/typing to myself) (ignoring timezone issues of course)
Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
3*10K resistors. one on the top side and 2 stacked on the down side. LDC with image. board fixed! to bad I did not find this before. I guess I needed some time sleeping and resting! now I do feel I'm on vacation. let the mods begin' no! let the mod continue
Re: M64 removal - Refitting & putting it to work.
Great, good that you fixed it..
