DSM2 module for Taranis X7

Post by Raythegreat » Mon Mar 19, 2018 4:48 pm

Hi,

I have the Taranis X7 with the latest 2.2.1 Firmware.

Can you please recommend a module to insert in the taranis X7 back compartment to get the DSM2 modulation?

Thanks

I have both but use this one in my Qx7 and 9xr pro.
If you’re only going to use opentx or ersky9x this one has no knob or ppm mode.
Same RF 4in1 internal module.

Thank you ShowMaster.

What is the PPM mode on the first proposed transmitter?
PPM for me is a pulse position modulation for servos and it is always required to move the servos, right?

Thanks,

DSM2 module for Taranis X7

Post by Daedalus66 » Wed Mar 21, 2018 4:03 am

PPM (pulse position modulation) is the oldest and most basic protocol for communication between the encode portion of a transmitter and the RF part. It’s been in use for 50 years or more in one form or another. Most commonly it provides 8 channels. Most modules can use PPM input, but serial is becoming more common.
What you are thinking about is PWM (pulse width modulation). That’s the protocol a traditional receiver uses to send output data to a servo, after sorting out the channels. It too has been around forever.
This is a much oversimplified version of things, but gives the general idea.

Thanks Daedalus66

I don't think you understood my question.
I'm sorry I did not explain well.

Let's phrase it differently.

There are two versions of the iRangeX module proposed, one with the knob and the other one without the knob.

What is the knob for on the iRangex plus?
ShowMaster said there is no knob or PPM on the iRangeX?

I'm not talking about Pulse width modulation PWM but PPM (Pulse Position modulation) used to drive the servos.
I know what PPM is. What I want to know is what is the knob used for and what is ShowMaster when saying it will not have PPM or the knob?

Thanks
RTG.

Hi all,

OK I got it, the knob on the iRangeX is for the modulation selection, that's all.
Live youtube.

Thanks to all.

PPM or CPPM as some call it, is normally used between the radio and the RF module, and also between receivers and flight controllers. It carries the information of all channels in one stream of pulses.

The PWM is generated by the receiver itself, it carries the information of one of the channels, and it is normally used to control servos or ESCs connected to the receiver.

You will also see PPM or CPPM mentioned in connection with the link between certain receivers and flight controllers. In that case, the conversion to separate PWM signals is done by the FC.
The best way to understand the difference is to realize that PPM consists of a frame of pulses, one per channel, repeated about every 22ms, from which the receiver (or FC) derives a distinct PWM signal for each channel.
The servos never see PPM.

But for using iRange (either one) with OpenTx, you do not use PPM . You should use
"DIY MultiProtocol Module" with subtype DSM2 or DSMx.
I believe the knob one has to have the knob setup at zero, but I have only used the non-knob one.

No knob or knob set to zero uses the serial protocol from a tx using opentx or ersky9x. The multi mode firmware must be added to get the menu option that fw offers.
In my case I have a pcm10 JR touch screen tx I still use.
It has pcm and ppm (cppm) mode and a module bay for a multi mode module
I wanted to use the pcm10 to fly Spektrum bnf planes so I needed the plus version multimode model with the knob in ppm mode.
No way to flash new multimode fw into my pcm10 so I use the knob in ppm mode.
The orange HK module comes as a ppm mode but it’s fw has a flaw and doesn’t work with some stabilized bnf planes. It’s ch order is also wrong.

It would seem that the default ch order in these modules are set to the stock flysky 9x ch order AETR. Makes sense since it’s been the go to inexpensive tx for so many years.

I needed to have the ch order TAER and the 4in1 comes as AETR. I (with help MikeB) flashed pascals 4in1 fw into the module with the ch order set to TAER.

Now my pcm10 in ppm mode, my Spektrum receivers do decode ch 1-4 at TAER.
Being I actually own many module bay jr tx’s from the past that were ppm only, I’m able to move this module around to them.
All my other tx’s have module bays and can use multimode fw so I may only need one 4in1 with a knob.
