Convert M9's to 5v hall sensors

Post by interestingfellow »

I have to go back to my stock board in my 9x and currently have M9 gimbals installed.

I can't use them with the stock board because it's 5v. I want to put 5v hall sensors in the M9s so I can keep using them. Even if the resolution isn't actually going to be better (8bit adc in the oem 9x board), they are better build quality and ball bearing.

I am novice, but from what I can find, I need a 5v tolerant linear hall effect sensor. I don't know what I'm looking for exactly, but I found these as well as several others.

Thoughts?

You'd be better off adding a 3V regulator to power the gimbals as they are.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that...
Wouldn't that decrease resolution more than the 5v hall sensors would?

It would, but changing the sensors would likely bring a load more problems.
Those that are in place are said to be calibrated after installation to ensure linearity.

Upgrade to the AR9x Upgrade Board would solve your troubles.
The AR9x Upgrade Board powers the Gimbals with the proper M9 needed voltage.
Find for the 9X, AR9x Upgrade Board here: (http://www.ar9x.net/).
This will move you from using er9x firmware to erSky9x firmware making your Radio a lot more powerful.

YES! That's a great idea, except that I already have one but it has an issue and I can't trust it to fly dangerous or expensive planes/helis.
Since there are no more AR9x's available (I've contacted Jetflyer already) I am going to go back to the stock board.

I can either sell the M9s, or make them work with stock board.

I think I'm going to roll the dice and try to install 5v hall effect sensors. I know kilrah had mentioned that they were calibrated at the factory, but from the conversions I have seen the hard part is usually aligning the magnet correctly. Since I'm just swapping the sensor, the magnet should be aligned within an acceptable variation.

Input is still welcome

They will only be calibrated with the new sensors if the sensors have exactly the same specs (mV/G) as the original but for 5V, they must be placed exactly in the same spot and height as the original ones, and obviously they must be pin compatible..

I did replace the pots on one of my 9x radios with hall sensors. It wasn't an easy task.

I think I'm going to make new PCBs and set the original boards off to the side, just in case I need to go back (Like if my conversion fails miserably, or I get the AR9x working reliably)
