Hi Smoke47,
If you are looking at new radio options, best to look for one that uses erSky9x firmware which is better then er9x.
I have the FrSky Taranis which I use erSky9x firmware in it and when connecting to your PC, you would use eepSkye instead of eepe.
The Taranis has good hardware and most of the upgrade are built in already.
The cheaper option is the 9XR-Pro which also uses erSky9x firmware.

João can walk you through finding what smoked and repairing your 9x radio.

If you would like (and feel comfortable with) trying to repair the radio, we could give it a try.. You will probably need to do some SMD desoldering/soldering.
A good start would be posting a good resolution picture of the mainboard, specially the area near the 2 voltage regulators..
Also, another picture from the switch board.

Normally when it smokes it won't turn on again..
Try flashing it again and see if the eeprom error goes. But do a read before you flash it.

If the radio turns ON, you might have blown a cap only. can you please post a good picture of the mainboard before you do anything else so we can check if there is some visible damage??

Funny that I have just built my own switch board for my radios to protect them exactly against reverse polarity.. :)

Spot on João! Attaching pics of main board....I fried a voltage regulator. Also a pic of the back PCB where battery plugs in. All looks OK there. Can I install a new voltage regulator? Good learning project as I ordered a new Taranis so this Turnigy will be for spare parts and soldering practice!

Are you really sure the regulator is also damaged? Did you measure the voltage there?
I am asking because you said that the radio turned ON afterwards?? Or did you use the programmer power to turn it ON?

I am sure I am out of my league....you all are way more advanced than me or my electronic skills. Is it possible to buy a new mainboard for my Turnigy 9X?

Wait there a second.. Why spending $15 on that if you can spend a bit more on this??

www.ar9x.net

You end up with a powerful radio with voice capability, fast processor, lots of memory, etc.. :o
With Ersky9x you can even costumize the radio with some more hardware, and even increase the number of switches for example..

Hi Smoke47,
I to, think to the AR9x upgrade board is a much better option.
You should consider this option, as it will makes your old broke 9x radio a lot more which you will like a lot better.
I can see in your photo that your 5v cap is smoked and maybe the only thing that needs to be replaced.
Do you know some one who has some understanding of electronics ? :?:

João, I am guessing that with going the AR9x upgrade board, there is no need to repair the 5V regulator ? :?:

OK, then no need to repair the 5v circuit.
If you do go for the AR9x, you may want to get with it, the Back-Light and the DS3231 Real-Time-Clock Module
(http://ar9x.net/index.php?route=product ... duct_id=50).

Just curious here ;) Are you going for a new 9x mainboard or for the Ar9x?

Ar9x
By the way João, how did you make your reverse polarity protection circuit? Sure would like to avoid that mistake again!

I believe the Ar9x is already protected against reverse polarity.
My reverse polarity protection circuit is also something else.
I had a power switch failure on my 9XR-PRO radio and the radio would try to turn OFF, and the power to the RF module would also be gone. So I've decided to build something that keep the radio ON if that happens. Then I also decided to add reverse polarity protection.
I have gone back to update this little project as someone wants to install it on the 9xtreme board that has a reverse polarity protection problem.
Here is the link to the project thread.

viewtopic.php?f=95&t=8210

I am also at this moment installing another Ar9x board on a 9x radio that I have been rebuilding. It was given to me as a piece of scrap :)
It is all fun. :)

Hi João,
This mod is only for the "reverse polarity protection": (viewtopic.php?f=126&t=7745).
With this mod "PPM protection resistor" is good to do also: (viewtopic.php?f=126&t=8778).
So your "reverse polarity protection" project mod also includes "protection against power switch & RF module power failure" ? :?:
I could then add this new mod to the "Optional 9Xtreme Radio Mods": (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=7182) ?

Those are the current essential mods for the 9xtreme radio, not Ar9x. The Ar9x does not need reverse polarity mod and also not PPM protection mod.
So your "reverse polarity protection" project mod also includes "protection against power switch & RF module power failure" ? :?:
My goal is to protect against power switch failure (MainBoard and RF module), and provide reverse polarity protection on both radio circuit and charge circuit.
I could then add this new mod to the "Optional 9Xtreme Radio Mods": (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=7182) ?
Good idea, but better wait until we find the best circuit.. I'm still messing about with it.. :)

I don't use linux myself, just run a copy in a virtual box to do the build. Since the development system is present, all dependencies are automatically satisfied.
I think you need a linux expert to answer this.

So libgt4-gui is either missing, not available in this release or version is not compatible. Check whether it is installed. If it is you may need to check which version of the release is required. If the version is wrong could be you are running a stable release and the software is beta.
