Frsky dht module in 9x wont go on

Post by NvdGoorbergh »

Hi All,
im currently having nightmares because of the 9x :S.
I have 9xtreme board and am running ersky9x because of it. I build in the frsky dht module the same way as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bm_OO5gexQ. When I connect everything up again and pust he button and power up the remote nothing happens.
Well the remote starts up but the led doesn't blink at all.
In the model set up I switched it to internal module and it is set to ppm.
Did I already fry the damn thing?

If you wired the DHT to the back of the 5-way header from the module bay, then it is still (logically) an external module. In this case, please try enabling the external module to test it. If that works, we'll sort where it needs to be wired to become an internal module.

Hmm ok.. I switched it to external but it didn't really matter. The led is still not doing anything.

You have it wired up incorrectly. That video is wrong.

Red and black are wrong.

Re-solder as pic below for use as 'EXTERNAL' module. I do not know how it would be wired for the 9XTreme as I do not posses one, but no doubt MikeB or someone will give you that info.

The simpleton asked "Hows about ErSky9X for Horus???". And the Genius from Dorset replied "Why not indeed? I shall get right onto it!" And then there was light on Horus! And it was good!

Unless you modified the back board, the pin you had the black wire on is also ground, so the module should be OK.
Is the toggle switch in the centre position?

I didn't modify the backboard but its a second (maybe third) hand remote. So who knows. The switch was in the middle position. The led never worked as far as I know. Thank you for your replies so far. Am off for bed know. Will look more into this tomorrow.

Am going to cut the heatshrink away to see if something is wrong with the wiring.

Can somebody explain to me how I should use the multimeter for checking the values? I am thinking that there is no 5v on that point bit im not shure.

The +ve voltage is the battery voltage, not 5V. It is switched separately form the power to the rest of the radio.
If this is a second hand radio, do you know if it was fully working when you got it?

Not sure. I got it without a module. The giy Ingot it from said it worked. But it took me a while before I got all the parts for my quadcopter so I couldnt check. I do use the remote for liftoff in combination with the trainer port and mini jack cable. Not sure if that is a sign that it would still work ;).

With the 9Xtreme, you can get the battery, but not a switched battery. For purely testing, you can use the battery, but this will be always connecting. The pin at the right of your picture is ground, the third pin is the battery connection.
If you want to try this, UNPLUG the battery at all times when working on it.

So you need a "switching battery" connection for that module? does that mean that when the 9x is off there is still power to that module If its not connected to a switching battery connection?
Is there somewhere else a place where I can get that from inside the 9x

edit: I connected it to the lower right pin for ground and third pin for battery connection and when I connected the battery the module sprang to life! I now understand what you mean by a switching connection :D. So the only thing that I need to do know is find that.. Thanks so far. am open for suggestions :D

Yes, on the 9Xtreme board. Have a look at the picture on this post: viewtopic.php?f=126&t=8443#p111755. Notice that pin 11 is marked "Battery Voltage". This is actually switched power, including the "soft power" switch. This voltage is then also switched to the internal and external modules by transistors controlled by the processor.

Thanks mike!

I found the pins. To make the wiring a bit easier I also took the ground from the 9xtremeboard. I did solder the ppm wire to the top pin on the back but is pin 9 on the 9xtreme board the same? (just in case the ppm pin on the back is also broken).

No, that pin is the "internal" signal, the one in the module bay is the "external" one.

Update! It bound to the receiver!
And it flew! well not exactly flying, more like exploding upward intop the ceiling and breaking three props and a small bit of the antenna and boucing trough the room uncontrolable and not responding to any input whatsoever but there was an reaction.
Lessons learned:
- set the failsafe!!!!
- check the channels (yaw was pitch  )
- Doucle check channels without props

Yep, you were lucky it didn't fly straight into your face :(
Electric models can be very dangerous as they don't warn you before they go crazy..
