Linux version of Companion 21-2.1.7 (solved)

I have downloaded the 32 bit Linux version of companion as above but cannot read the file.
Is there further information somewhere about what program to open it with?
Can someone assist please?
Also, if there is anyone who has used Linux for installing this and Open tx. using Linux Mint 17.1, I would like some general guidance.

That's exactly what I want to do. Perhaps I did not ask the right question.
I want to know how to do it please?
When I extract the files from the download, a "Untrusted application launcher" notification comes up. launch at own risk etc.
What do I do with this?

Used PCLinuxOS (*.rpm packages) for some time and changed over to DEBIAN (*.deb packages) a year ago and never had any issue having companion on my desktop.

1. So, which packages did you download from here? http://downloads-21.open-tx.org/companion/?C=M;O=D

2. Open a terminal on your Mint Linux.
3. Go to the folder, where the package has been downloaded.
4. Inside that terminal change to root
5. As "root" type in at the command prompt rpm -i *.rpm
6. Copy the result and post it here

You don't have to say sorry.

Normally on a Linux system your are a simple user and as a simple user you are only allowed to do "normal" task like ....

But normally as simple user you are NOT allowed to make changes on your Linux system. And installing and deleting programs are part of those system changes. So get "root" or use sudo command to be receive privileges!

I think, we can not make a very basic training on Linux here. Best is, get a book and start reading.

I feel I do as I have been using Linux Mint successfully for over two years now with over a page of threads asking questions on the linux forums. During alll that time, I have never read the above term "change to root". I've obviously missed something.
Still, I learn daily more about computer jargon; this is no exception.

And I don't wish to appear as though I'm taking umbrage. However, the question in my mind, is just where is the beginning, as you put it? Until reading your replies, I thought I had a working knowledge of Linux operating systems. Your appraisal and advice has smashed that assumption and the confidence that comes with it.

On Ubuntu I use a program called ALIEN. It will change .rpm to .deb
then back to dkpg.

Since I don't know Mint I can't be sure. but just using sudo preceding the commands takes care of not going to root for me in Ubuntu.

P.S. Don't get your panties in a bunch, some people answer in a sever way...maybe they just had a bad night with their significant other last night.

The *.deb package is available in 32 and 64 bit!!

You really missing something. But there is a tendency with those "modern" distros, to keep a lot "behind curtains" and give the user a more windows like system.

And if you do a search in google for "linux root sudo" it will give ~ 1.7 Million hits

Google has been very helpful to me as far as linux is concerned.
Linux got much more user friendly in the last few years. I still didn't discard windows completely as there is some specific software that I need which is not available for linux... yet.

Linux is much faster and doesn't leave c**p behind as windows does. My PC runs much faster as soon as I boot it with ubuntu studio. But this has a little price. It is a bit more difficult to do some tasks, as you must write specific commands on terminal to achieve what you want. I do prefer the click and check box thingy, and I believe with me most of the non developer/non code programmer kind of people. But it is getting better and I believe that soon will be as easy as windows to work with.
I remember I needed about a day to calibrate a joystick on ubuntu I had to edit a piece of code and insert the joystick values manually. Woow, such a simple task in windows and you need to be a rocket scientist to do it on linux there were some programs that run on terminal but they were either very difficult to work with, or they didn't work at all. It was an absolute nightmare.

Wow ... with my .deb files I simply click on them and let GDebi do the install ... worse comes to worse, I right-click and do a "Open with ..."

Give it my password and off it goes.

You can install it with a ton of other built-in installers ... you can go manual from the terminal ... why make life complicated.
