Taranis (1st version) Problem with Checklist 2.0.15

Post by JohnB »

I am not sure if this is the proper place to post, If not hopefully someone will point me in the proper direction.

I have the very first version of the Taranis hardware and I just update to 2.0.15 firmware.

I made a checklist file for one of my models and enabled the checklist. When the TX powers on an attempt is made to display my check list which has multiple lines some with as many as 32 characters, some blank lines and some lines that start with spaces. Only a single line is displayed and it contains many junk characters - Photo attached.

I have looked at my text file with a binary editor to make sure it did not contain any strange characters and it does not.

I built a new text file that only contains the word Hello and nothing displays for that file.

I have opened the saved file on the SD card via the USB interface to the Taranis and the PC displays the file contents correctly.

I then sent my file to a friend with a Taranis running 2.0.13 and the file displays properly. I never tried to use a Checklist file on this Taranis before so I don't know if they worked properly with previous firmware versions. I either have a Taranis problem or 2.0.15 does not work properly with Checklists.

Hopefully I am posting in the correct forum and not wasting peoples time.

Do you experience any other display problems? Upload your text file somewhere and post link here. First thing I recommend is to re-download OpenTX firmware and flash your Taranis again.

Thank you, failing file is at this link:

Failing Text file inside of the Zip

I am going to reload the firmware now.

I case it makes any difference I use the option to display servo position in microseconds and not percentage. I have not noticed any other display problems with 2.0.15 but I have not used if much either. Just did the update yesterday and the first thing I did was try to add the Checklist File.

Hello John.

Loaded your text file from rcgroups and unpacked it.

Put it on my linux machine and displayed it with midnight commander.

Then I took one of my text files from my Taranis and here you can see it

That is not a problem. Most Windows editors use CRLF (^M^J) at the end of a line and UNIX (Linux) usually use only LF (^J). The Taranis I believe works with both.

I have since located the cause but I am not sure I understand why it caused a problem.

I mentioned that I had verified the file on the SD card by loading it into my Windows Editor (via the USB interface to the TX) so I knew the file on the SD card was correct.

It latter occurred to me that about a month ago I changed my Taranis SD Card. I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro (Windows 8.1) that I can carry in my flight box. It only had a 16G SD Card in it and I upgraded it to a 64G SD Card.

I did not have any use for the removed 16G card so I put it in my Taranis to replace the factory supplied Toshiba 2G SD Card (no speed rating printed on this card).

This morning I copied the entire contents of the 16G card from the Taranis to a directory on my PC hard drive, deleted everything from the old 2G Taranis SD card and then copied the directory from my PC hard drive to the old 2G SD Card. Installed the old SD card into the Taranis, powered on and my Checklist file displayed properly.

The SD card that does not work is a G.SKILL 16G Micro SD HC class 10. Must be the Taranis hardware does not like this card, maybe because it is HC.

I don't really need a 16G SD card in the Taranis, I only used it because I had it. Everything else seemed to work fine except for the Checklist display.

I will leave the 2G SD card installed.

I did a quick search and could not locate the Taranis SD card requirements.

Thanks to everyone that helped with this one.

John, my mistake, you are right.

^M is NOT the reason.

Put your unaltered txt file here in the sim.

It's OK so ... sorry. Was guessing and did not do that test before.

Besides, we have a German Taranis manual and it says

SD card 1 - 2 GB. (Mine came with a 1 GB card and I have a spare 2 GB.)

No problem, thank you for taking the time to help.

I just looked at my English manual and I could not find any size references for the SD card but it sure looks like the 2G limit in your manual is accurate.

The strange thing is that everything else I have tried worked, it was only the display of Checklist files that caused a problem. I don't know it there would have been any problems with flight, it has been too cold here for me to even think about that.

I will stick with the 2G card, 16G is far more than I will ever need.

Thanks again,
John

John, might be a good idea to use the sd formatter.

I used the sd-formatter on the 16G card, restored all of the data from my PC copy and installed in the TX. This card does not support full erase so I had to use the "overwrite" option and that took a while.

My Checklist now works with the 16G SD card.

I may still put the 2G card back until I can verify that the Taranis supports the 16G card.

The only reason I used the 16G card is because I already had it and I have logging turned on. I was concerned the card might become full if I forget to delete old logs. I seem to forget to do things as I age

Thank you,
John

The Taranis works fine with any card size as long as the filesystem is FAT16/32.

Same here John ...

Got my spare SD card from ebay. Those "small" SD cards are not around anymore.

br from Germany - KH

PS. About SD card size. Found that

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1913902 -> posting #11

and http://www.frsky-rc.com/BBS/viewtopic.php?t=484&p=833

So it's not clear. I stick to the small ones ...
