GPS taking 10mins to fix location

Post by Weds »

I've recently received a frsky GPS module, whilst it works well being able to output the log file straight to Google earth via a KMZ file i'm finding it can take over 10 mins to fix its location..

The GPS PDF file says it should fix in 30secs.. Is it normal for such a long time or do i have a dodgy one..

Cheers

I've tried hanging it outside the model on the ground waiting for a fix and inside the model, doesn't appear to make much difference..

Try on top of the model, and raise the model a foot or two off the ground.

What equipment do you have on your model? Any FPV stuff?

The GPS shoud be as far away as possible from any other electronics, including the receiver.

It usually sits above the receiver but I now take it out and rest it on top of the wing whilst it's on the ground..

This might sound stupid but isn't the GPS upside down? :D

well, maybe it's worth to test with the "up" sticker to the other side? you never know. The guys that glued the sticker are nearly upside down ;) :)

Just done a test outside in the garden..

With GPS module outside the plane with the 'UP' label downwards I gave up after 25 minutes without getting a lock. Switched off..
Tried with 'UP' label upwards and it took just on 5 mins to lock, when switched off and tried again without moving the GPS module it still took another 5 mins to lock on.

I've just bought the GPS module indoors and it still appears to be locked on OK..

As much as I would like to add the FrSky GPS receiver to my quadcopter to provide telemetry data to the Taranis Plus, every time I come across a post about it, the results are typical of what the OP posted. I wish FrSky could put a simple GPS receiver together. Others are doing it for the same price....I have a $35 GPS receiver on my quad, sitting just 25 centimeters directly above the FC board and it will lock from a warm start in 10 seconds.

Thanks for the confirmation that FrSky hasn't got the bugs out of their GPS receiver yet. :(

Just been messing about again with the GPS, I have it daisy chained with a vario to an X8R receiver with the vario first in line, I have now swapped them over with the GPS first in line. Resting the nose of the model by the window sill inside the house the GPS locked on within a minute or so... and the vario still appears to function. Don't know why I didn't try that before..

It shouldn't make any difference on the smart port, but it obviously does, at least in your situation. Hmmm.....I'm on the fence trying to figure out if I want to spend the money or not. It is the easiest solution for my getting GPS data to display on my Taranis. I fly a APM board which has a GPS receiver plugged into it...that works great but getting that GPS data into the X8R's data link isn't nearly as easy as plugging in a FrSky GPS module.

Maybe I will.....not sure yet.
