Unexpected RSSI alarm

Post by MikeB »

I was flying my electric glider on Tuesday and on several occasions I got a RSSI LOW warning. I had range checked before flying (of course!) and had over 50m. On one occasion it was only 267 feet high, and almost overhead.
Taranis with openTx r2647, D8R-II rx with aerials at right angles.
Next time I fly it I'll try to set up a log file, but I'm still trying to configure the Vario tones, I haven't read up how to do that yet.

Mike do you have carbon parts on the glider? I sometimes have the same.. the other day I had single beeps at 170m high and overhead.. people say that single beeps are normal.
check also what the values for the alarms are. I think opentx had the alarms a bit too high..
Antenna placement is very important in gliders..
I'm sure you know all this already.. but just in case..

Believe its a multiplex culularis? Foam glider?

The occasional low rssi value is not an issue - as long as it recovers!

I set my RSSI alarms for 40 to keep the alarms to a minimum. As a rule I never get lower than 51 for line of sight but in the past I actually flew with RSSI at 18 and never had a loss of control.
I understand less than 40 could cause loss of control according to a post I read.
So far in 2 years of my DJT and D8R combos I've had solid flights.
I'm using D8R II receivers with my Taranis and so far the RSSI levels are about the same, 51 lowest. I'll note the levels more next time I fly.

No carbon, it's an old 'plane not the Cularis yet. It has flown many times with a 9x/DJT/D8R-II with never a bleep from the DJT set to 45. So to get warnings from the Taranis was a surprise. It is a different D8R-II as I wanted to be able to swap the original back in and use the 9X if I needed to, without needing to re-bind.
The range check was slightly better than the 9X/DJT combination.

The RSSI info was filtered in openTx for the 9x, but filtering was disabled on the Taranis because we receive about 10x fewer values from the XJT than from a DJT. So it is possible that a fade leading to RSSI going below the threshold for a short period of time and was filtered out is now reported.

I was teaching myself how to bind my Taranis to the paddle version of the x8r last night. I tried D8 and D16.
I needed D16 to also get the new precision vario working. I found that when I had the X8R within a foot or so of the Taranis I'd get a lost telemetry announcement. Moving it away I got a telemetry back announcement. I could reproduce this often.
I'm assuming this is a overload condition? Anything I should be concerned about?

This is normal. the tx signal is swamping the signal. Keep 1 meter away and all will be OK :)

Thanks Rob. I hoped that was the answer from my testing.
It's good to read the facts however.
