Taranis Display LCD contrast

Post by jonlowe »

This question was asked over on the RCG forums, but I thought we might get a quicker answer here. How do you change the contrast of the LCD display on the Taranis? Nobody can find anything in the settings menu. Is there a button combination on the transmitter itself you push to change the contrast? Or is this an oversight in the firmware?

As far as we have been told there was no need for a contrast adjustment on the Taranis' LCD. The FrSky-supplied LCD driver had no function to set contrast either.

Maybe need to reevaluate that...

Hmm is the left side really different from the right one? Could be a photo trick, mine does the same when photographed.
The right part looks normal.

I don't know. I'm not the original poster on that forum. I think it is probably just a camera issue from left to right, but I don't know for sure.

I would love to tweak mine slightly. It is close - but not quite :)

Guess something to hassle Frsky for on the driver front.

As I see it, if Frsky didn't leave us something to modify or complain about the forum could stop dead in its tracks.
It's very creation was founded on modifying and upgrading our radios.
Without some issues we would be reduced to discussing model programming and our irons, meters, scopes, and solder wick would become relics on a shelf with our AM transmitters.
I hope mine will ship this week before everyone else find all the flaws.
Save something for the rest of us.
Posted in jest of course!
The fact that it's finally being sold is great news and I'm sure it's many features will shake up the RC community and these minor flaws will be corrected. I was disappointed the haptic feature was omitted but a good friend pointed out that I should be patient because I'll start shaking on my own soon enough. Ugh, something to look forward to.

Well, showmaster just to rub one in. My radio also has a silent electric humm.
Switching noise or RF interference.

Tilman, I get a low level hum from my Tx speaker, is this what you're talking about? I wonder if they all do it.

Try turning the volume level down? Is it getting through the amp input or on the power buss? If you rotate the antenna horz or vert or wrap your hand around the antenna end does it change? The idea here is it on the dc buss, getting in on the amp input lines and could it be a RFI issue from the tx output? Each one could/should have a fix as soon as it's isolated to a source of the noise.
Audio circuits and digital and RF don't always play together well. Aldo switching regulators, if the Taranis uses one, can put noise on the dc buss.
Looks like my scope is going to get a workout next week.

I got mine the other day and the first thing I went for was the contrast setting. My display is exactly the same as the pictures linked to on RCGroups but pictures don't do it justice though. It really is pretty bad. The problem is the more pixels that are on in any given column, and the darker they are, the more it darkens the shade of other pixels in the same column. Classic LCD with the contrast too high. The grey horizontal bar across the main screen (the one with battery voltage) shows it well, it's stripy and none uniform. I think a contrast setting would cure it.

My speaker also makes a little noise while doing nothing, but I really do have to have my ear up to it to hear, and I only noticed it after reading this !

I find the viewing angle helps the contrast - but it needs to be improved.

I solution will be sorted :)

Wow Romolo, that took you an entire day! You must be getting tired. Seriously, thanks again for your amazing response to resolve the issue.

Please tell us what the problem was and what we will see different. Will there be a new contrast adjustment option, or display format change, or ???

Ted

edit - Oops, I just went to the openTx site and see where you added a contrast adjustment feature. Well done!

Can the patch be downloaded and applied in any way, or do we have to wait for the next firmware version?

Hi Ted,
sorry for taking time, but normally, as probably you know, I do not work in firmware but much more in c9x
So before committing something I normally ask for Bertrand approval, as he has a much wider vision of possible issues than I have.

Romolo, that's perfect. I've turned the contrast down to 10, and now the text and graphics on the top line are perfect. Many thanks for your prompt actions!

Of nothing, just for reference which is the temperature at your location ? I got an idea about the problem.
(here with 10 i get very little contrast, but on slope I'm still at 12°C)

I've just been out for a quick test flight, and the temperature is 14°C. Today it has been up to 22°C, and over 30°C in my workshop. Temperature seems to make no difference to it. I am very pleased with the screen in sunlight, still very easy to read.

You have to update, using C9x, to the very latest firmware (r2604) released just a couple of days ago to get the contrast adjustment. It's on the Radio Setup screen.
