Vario works fine but no altimeter

Post by aduncan »

Turnigy 9XR Pro, Frsky DJT module with telemetry modification, Frsky D4R-11, OpenXVario.

The vetical speed is working fine, but I cannot get any values on altitude. I Know that the Frsky vario needs a digital and an analogue connection to work, but I think that the openXVario only needs digital.

The 9XR Pro is running OpenTX 2.0.17. The proto is set to Hub, and the vario source to Alt.

Any ideas?

Andrew

Hello Andrew.

Which version of oXs are you using? Did you use the oXs Configurator or did you manually edit the oXs_config file? Hardware, pro-mini, nano ...., sensor MS5611 ??

... but I think that the openXVario only needs digital.
correct!

You might attach your oXs_config file here.

As I am not familiar with the Turnigy 9XR Pro, you might also post a pic of your TX display here.

Had one of those "Ding!" moments! The 9XR Pro is better supported by ER9XSky, which is the software it comes with. So I flashed it, and tried again. Altitude now works as it should.
This means that the fault lies with OpenTX rather than the vario. Problem solved, now to learn how to program ER9XSky.

You could open an issue on openTx github.
So the developpers could look at it and fix it in a new release.

If you haven't read these manuals, you should find them useful.

ersky9x has had some major changes since the 9XR-PRO came out. Many of these changes are also in er9x and so you should also find this manual useful:

Thanks Mike. I used ER9X with my first 9X a long time ago. I'm amazed how how different the 2 firmwares are now. I had a Taranis (twice) but could not take to it, but I did get used to the programming. I have already found several things about ER9XSky which I like. It will take a little while before it all comes together.

Its obvious that the OpenTX developers have had to concentrate on the Taranis, it has probably outsold the 9XR Pro ten to one.

ersky9x does also run on the Taranis.

Max has gone, welcome Half and Full. Otherwise the basics seem similar. I have two minor problems. Firstly there is no Alt+ telemetry value, is there a simple way to get the max altitude value? Secondly I cannot get vario tones to work, I've probably looked at the setting umpteen times without realising what it was.

Max altitude is hard coded on the telemetry display with LAT and LONG showing. At present, this is the only way to see it.
If you turn logging on, you can, of course, look at the flight data afterwards and see what the max. altitude was!

With your current setup, are you seeing a value for Vspd? You may put it on to one of the custom telemetry screens. What revision of ersky9x are you using?

You need to configure the vario in the telemetry menu. Source should be vspd. Then select a switch.

Vers: V. 110-Mike
Date: 11.04.2015
Time: 22:43:42
SVN: ersky9x-r217
MOD: REVB-X

I had only just found the other telemetry screens before I posted. When I saw LAT and LONG I assumed all the values on that page were for a GPS unit. Max altitude does not change, even though Alt and Vspd show properly on the custom screen.

Just tried logging. Opened the.csv file in Excel, Vspd was shown, but no Alt.

Works with source set to ---- or Vspd. Switch is set to on. Tried Ail, no difference.

Alt should be in there as AltB (for Altitude Barometric), just after A2.

What do you have the sensitivity set to? When using Vspd, you probably only want it set to 1 or 2, a higher value is less sensitive.

What sort of values do you get for Vspd?

Alt is there, after A1= and A2= is RXXI and TSSI, there is no AltB in the pick list. Sensitivity was set at 5, now set it to 2.

This is an OpenXVario, which I have used before with Multiplex settings. Reflashed it for FrSky. The readings have only been lifting the vario, rx and battery up and down. Probably about 0.6 - 1.00 up, and about the same down. Alt values are also reasonable.
