3D PRINTING TURNIGY for RC Hobby (CR10 3D Printer)

Post by bob195558 »

HI Everyone,
I have ordered the Creality 3D CR-10 3D Desktop DIY Printer yesterday,
which is on sale for $359.99 at GearBest (https://www.gearbest.com/3d-printers-3d ... 41281.html).
Free shipping to United States. Manufacturing Company: (http://www.creality3donline.com/product ... duct_id=14).
The reviews for the Creality 3D CR-10 are good and with its low cost is said to be very good for beginners.
This is not a small 3D Printer, printing size: X: 300mm, Y: 300mm, Z: 400mm.
Creality 3D CR-10 3D Desktop DIY Printer
Creality 3D CR-10 3D Desktop DIY Printer
This is will be a new thing for me to learn and my hope is to be able to make (design)
a new 9x case which will move the display screen to the top of the 9x radio.
Anyway this is my hope and goal, that in time I will be able to reach. :)

My thinking is I will need to start out making small RC parts.

Youtube info about the "Creality 3D CR-10 Printer": (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbmdwBwm7BU).

To move the display screen to the top and move the speaker down to where the screen is.
Move the switches out to the sides some maybe.
Will need to move the 3 pots too, maybe.
Back case will maybe not need much changes, if any.
I do not want to turn the display screen around and will maybe need a longer cable for it.
Main board and battery stay at the bottom.
Power Switch maybe could moved down a little if needed
or cut the unneeded top part of the power switch board (using erSky9x firmware).

I have a spare 9x Display Screen and here I have it set just above the Taranis Gimbals.
May not need to move any switches and will need a longer display cable.
Anyone have a cad of the 9x radio case ? Would help to save a lot of time.

If I was doing it, or when I can afford a 3D printer, I want to move the LCD to the top as well. Pots (or sliders) will go on the bottom where I can reach them easily. LCD will be moved to the right, to allow only a couple of switches that I don't normally use in flight, like the switch I use for throttle cut. All the other switches will be moved to the left where I can reach them well with my throttle hand. The right hand side switches on all my radios are completely useless to me. :)
So, LCD on top, and to the right :) This will give an asymmetric look, I wonder how it would come out :) Need to make a sketch really :D ;D

Re: 3D PRINTING (3D Printer Slicing Softwares)

Post by bob195558 »

I am thinking to first create a Cad of the stock 9x case and then 3D Print it out properly, before making changes to 3D Print out a Custom 9x Cases.

Bend looking at some 3D Printer Slicing Softwares which some are free downloads.
1) Ultimaker Cura
2) Craftware (Craft Unique)
3) Solidworks
4) Simplify3d ($150.00) which looks very good, but I need to keep cost down.

Found here a list of 3D Printer Slicing Softwares: (https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1PR ... SeLmOZiAF4).

You're mixing things a bit.
Cura, Craftware and Simplify3D are slicers/machine control programs, i.e. programs that turn existing 3D models into toolpaths that your machine will execute then send those commands to the printer (should you connect to it through USB, or save the result to file for SD card printing, which is preferred). They do NOT allow you to create/design/model parts.
Solidworks is a 3D CAD program that you create parts with, but it cannot turn them into code your machine can execute.

Basically you need (at least) one of each software, one to create your parts and one to slice them (or some you've downloaded).

A common powerful and free for hobbyists CAD program is Fusion360. There's also Sketchup, FreeCAD and others... THIS is where the hard work is :)

Re: 3D PRINTING (RC Hobby for 3D Printers)

Thank you Kilrah for clarifying the difference.
Back in the 1990's I used for a short time, FeatureMill a slicers / machine control program, it was cool for back then,
as it had a 3D simulation before sending it to the CNC Mill, that back when programs were on floppies.

I do have an old legal version of 2D AutoCad (Win95) that is on floppies too.
But, maybe I should look at an old version (4) (2008) TurboCAD Deluxe 2D/3D for a MAC,
which I picked up on clearance at Staples long time ago and that is on a CD.

I did not know if the 3D CAD programs had been total integrated together with the slicers / machine control programs.
It's been a long time since I played with them I will have a look at these, thank you Kilrah again ! :)

Fusion360 (had typo'd the name) does merge CAD and CAM but only for CNC milling/turning, not 3D printing - so still need to use an external slicer for that.

Studying through the 3D Slicer Software tools for 3D Printers,
I think I will begin with the Cura 3.1.0 (Ultimaker):
(https://ultimaker.com/en/products/ultim ... a-software).

I am still looking at different 3D CAD programs.

Fusion 360 (AUTODESK) for a 3D CAD program.
You will need to create a new account (register) with Fusion 360 (AUTODESK).
You then can use Fusion 360 for free as an "Enthusiast" (Hobbyist) by first downloading
and installing the "Full use of Fusion 360 free for 30-days"
(https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusio ... e=google&u)
Then after the installation find,
How to activate Start-up, Student or Educational licensing for Fusion 360
(https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/ ... n-360.html)

1) Select "Trial Counter" in the upper toolbar of Fusion 360.
2) In the next dialog box, select "Register for Free Use".
3) 3 Sign up as Enthusiast (Free).
4) 3 Select the "I accept Terms and Conditions" Checkbox and click Submit.

You then may need to re-register ones a year to continue using Fusion 360 (AUTODESK) for free.

Re: 3D PRINTING (Creality 3D CR-10 3D Desktop DIY Printer)

Post by bob195558 »

HI Everyone,
Received my Creality 3D CR-10 3D Desktop DIY Printer yesterday (Jan. 02, 2018)
and have been assembling it. :)
There is a lot of info already about setting up the CR-10 3D Printer,
(similar to what we do with our 9x radios, Mods and Upgrades),
so I will post some info that maybe something that I think may have been missed.

Something interesting, I have not powered up the CR-10 yet and when moving the Y axis back and forth the display on the control box lights up.
Looks like the Y axis Step Motor is generating power back to the Control Box.
Could this be a problem ? :?:

Update: Bed Glass Not Flat :( ,
The bed glass that comes with the CR-10 3D printer is sometimes not flat enough.
This is a common thing with the CR-10 and one way to correct the problem is to purchase the
LOTS Mirrors 12" x 12" ($8.99/4 pack) from ikea: (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/39151700/).
I am having trouble finding, as there is no ikea stores near me
and Ikea says I can not order the Mirrors online from them too.
So I am/will search locally for 12" x 12" (LOTS) Mirrors.

Did find locally at "Home Depot" Glacier Bay 6-piece frameless 12" x 12" (Glass) Square Mirrors for $9.99.
The 12 x12 mirror is flatter, but not perfect, so I leveled the center area of the Heated Print Bed so to be
able to start printing.

For my first 3D Print I chose to make is an upgrade-mod part called "CR-10_Ultimate_Leveling_knob_attachment" (Leveling Wheel) which is download from thingiverse.
See youtube: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMrd-6tNh9Y&t=14s).
From Amazon I purchased esun 3D filament PLD+ (Blue) and then need to make some setting changes in
the Cura slicer program like in "Material", Printing Temperature: 210 degrees C
and Build Plate Temperature: 65 degrees C.
Then save as gcode to desktop and place into Micro SD-Card, power down 3D Printer to insert Micro SD-Card
and power back up, select the new 3D printing file.

Then the first thing that happens is the Heated Print Bed heats up to the
"Build Plate Temperature": 65 degrees C
and the second thing the Printing Head heats up to the
"Printing Temperature": 210 degrees C.
Then the Z, X, and Y axis's start moving and applying the PLD+ material to the Heated Print Bed.
Should take about 4.5 hours to complete the printing.

Finished first 3D printed part:

Leveling_knob_Jan062018_K.jpg
It stuck to the Heated Printing Bed really hard, very difficult to remove it.

Leveling_knob_Jan062018_o.jpg
I made some print setting changes in "Cura" for the next one and so not sure why there is a gap on the outer rim.
It is very strong so will work very well. :D

Here is a tip to cut down on bad prints,
take some foam and put some Cooking Oil (like canola) on it
and fold it around the Filament before it enters the filament feeder.
Foam with Cooking Oil around Filament.jpg
This will clean and add a little oil to the surface of the filament which gives a little oil lube,
