Turnigy 9XR PRO + FrSky Module + Receiver how to setup telemetry

Post by biomecanoid »

Hi,

I have bought the Turnigy 9XR Pro, the FrSky DJT Combo and the cable to connect the Turnigy with the module.

I have been flying without telemetry for a while now because the cable that connects the Tx with the module was late in the mail.

Now that i received the cable its time to setup the telemetry, but i don't have a clue how. I have bind the module to the plane with the 2 dip switches on the off position and in the manual it says thats the correct setup for telemetry.

Now what else is left to do. Sorry for the naive question but never done anything similar before.

Best Regards

As I thought :( You have the combo with the non telemetry receiver. :( Sorry to give you the bad news :(

You needed this one

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... le_RX.html

The DJT module you have is a telemtry one, but the receiver you have is a V8FR-II, which has no telemtry..
For telemetry you need the D8R-II Plus or the D4R-II
I don't know why the heck HK sells the combo with a non telemetry receiver. Many people buy it by mistake :(

That's the one..

If you want telemetry, and depending on what you want, and on your model(s), you might need some sensors..
what kind of model you will use this setup'
How good are you with a soldering iron?~

I can solder for "land" use if i can use that expression but i would not trust my skills to go airborne, big NO NO.

As for telemetry data i can live with 2 values Signal strength and Battery voltage.

I have been posting my setup on 5 different forums and discussing with lots of people for a period of about a year trying to be cautious on what to buy and no-one noticed module receiver mistake :(

Thanks for helping and pointing that out

If that is OK i will post some pics of my setup

Nice little plane. :)

Ok, you need a voltage sensor for reading the Lipo battery. DO NOT CONNECT THE BATTERY DIRECTLY TO THE A1 OR A2 PORTS OF THE RECEIVER. Or you will fry it.
Maybe a voltage sensor like this one..

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... e%20sensor

with some soldring (a couple resistors) you could make it yourself..

Also have a look at this project..

You can also follow it on this forum.

OK so to sum up and make sure i don't make another mistake, i need these 2:

The receiver module:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-4G-FrSky-D8 ... OSwbdpWVYN~

and the voltage sensor
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... e%20sensor

if i understand thing correctly the voltage sensor will connect to the balance plug of the batter and just needs a plug

If you are ordering the sensor from HobbyKing, you might just as well order the receiver from there as well.. Cheaper :)

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... etery.html

This one work with your module too

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... CPPM_.html

I thought the 6 channel one was discontinued but they still sell it :)

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... el_RX.html

And a 4 channel receiver..

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... etry_.html

All these support telemetry. Some have a few more features than the others.. Have fun :)

I guess the FrSky D8R-II PLUS is the best of the lot.

Which one would you suggest ?

No, that is a X series receiver for the new XJT module.. You want the D series receiver.
Like D8R-II plus, D6FR, D4R-II, D8R-XP..

So if i change the Rx on the plane that means that i should trim the moving surfaces all over again ?

I don't think so.. I believe all will work as before as the radio is still sending the same values

Thanks for you quick and on point answers.

Apart from signal strength and voltage sensors the next sensors that i may need are air-speed and altitude.

Didn't find any on hobbyking:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... metry.html

are there any ?

For altitude check the openXsensor link I posted above. I'm not sure the frsky vario works with the D Series receivers. A vario will give you vertical speed and altitude.
Airspeed is a bit more complicated. I think frsky has a sensor (not sure) but it might work only with theX series system..

I just looked at the FrSky Vario on T9's site. The picture shows it still has the connections to support the 'D' series receivers and it has a cable suitable for such a connection.
I'm still using one with a 'D' receiver.

Hi biomecanoid,
Here is some D-Series Sensors also: (https://alofthobbies.com/radio-gear/frs ... nsors.html).
FrSky Sensor Hub - FSH-01 and FrSky High Precision Vario (FVAS-02H).
There was a lot of different D-Series Sensors and maybe still if you can find them somewhere.
I do no know where to find FrSky D-Series air-speed sensors.

Thanks Bob,

Is there GPS for the D-series ?
I am thinking that as an easy solution for speed and altitude readings as opposed to air-speed sensor and vario.

For the 'D' series you need a "hub" and the appropriate sensors. T9 in the UK have them, see: http://www.t9hobbysport.com/rc-gear/frs ... -telemetry.
The SPort vario is a special case is it also may be plugged in to a 'D' series receiver directly (without hub).

Lol HK messed me up good with their combo deal.

Can you please recommend an X series module and receiver and their relevant sensors.

I guess that's the proper way to go now since the D-Series is obsolete

FrSky XJT - JR/Graupner Type 16ch Duplex Transmitter Telemetry Module
XJT can work as a DJT module also. A lot of people still use D-series that uses A1, A2 telemetry connections.
FrSky (I believe) is shooting themselves in the foot by not making D-series sensors anymore.

FrSky X8R - 8/16 Channel Receiver with S.Port telemetry connection.
or
FrSky X6R - 6/16 Channel Receiver (S.Port) with Sbus (This also has the A2 telemetry connection).
There are other X-series receivers too.

Some of the X-Series sensors which use S.Port telemetry connection: (https://alofthobbies.com/radio-gear/frs ... nsors.html).

Si i guess i will be buying these:

Tx-Rx

https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-xjt-jr-g ... odule.html

https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-x8r-8-16 ... eiver.html

Sensors

https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-sp-flvs- ... ensor.html

https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-airspeed ... rated.html

https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-sp-gps-s ... ps-v2.html

https://alofthobbies.com/n2-minihub-for-frsky-702.html

From what i understand sensors are connected to the hub and then to the RX.

Are there any sensors that are connected directly to the Rx without the use of a hub and if so how many can i have installed without a hub ( only one ? ). The minimum sensors that i need is voltage sensor and GPS.

Can you see anything wrong with the above ?

Thanks
