No welcome voice. SOVLED :-)

Post by furnibird »

I have installed my 9xtreme board with success and updated 2.18 firmware. I also formated a 16gig sd card and placed the voice folder on it. But i am not getting a welcome voice or any voice working. Could anyone help me here please. Have been out of the RC loop for a year or so but i believe i have done the install correct. I am getting a slight hiss from speaker. No uhf module installed yet.
Thanks Darren

Do you get any 'beeps' when you press the buttons?
Also, check in the "Audio/Haptic" menu the volume is not 0 and the beeper is set to "Norm"

If those are the files you used then you probably didn't install them correctly. Just backup your existing voice folder, or just rename it to something else, then unzip the voice pack file you downloaded to the root directory of the SD Card. You should now see a "voice" folder with 3 other folders inside. "System, user and modelNames".
Leave the system folder alone. You can put your own files in the user folder and voice files for the model names in the modelNames folder, obviously ;)
I am assuming that you downloaded the voice pack recently. I have removed the old pack as people were getting confused because of it.

If you start the radio in bootloader mode, then connect the USB cable, do you see the SD card as one of the two drives on the computer, and can read it?
If that is OK, from the main screen press and hold MENU, to get the popup, then select "Model Setup". From the menu index select "Voice". Go down "File Type" and select "Name".
Go down one line to "Voice File", and press MENU LONG. This should call up a list of available user voice files.
Since you have beeps, the processor DAC output and the audio amplifier are working, so we are looking at a problem between files on the SD card and the DAC output from the processor.

The name of the voice file on your 9Xtreme SD card needs to be "voice" .
Just want to add this info so to be sure you have your voice file named properly.

Ok in Maintenance mode the drives do not show up. but in firmware mode they do. And going into the voice file name area doesnt show a list on long press.

In maintenance mode the drives aren't supposed to show up.

I still suspect that you don't have the voice files correctly installed.

Starrt the radio in Bootloader mode, connect the USB, wiat for the drives to show up, and open the SD Card.
You must have a folder named "voice".
Inside the "voice" folder there are 3 folders. "system", "user",and "modelNames". No other files or names inside the "voice" folder.
Inside the system folder there are the system files. The welcome message is one of them.
Inside the user folder there are some files you can select from the voice menu. Here is where you add your own files.
In the modelNames folder you place the voice files you made so the radio can say the active model name at startup or when loading a new model..

I don't know if it makes a difference, maybe not, but you could try to change the name of the folder from "Voice" to "voice"

Please try the following:
Go to the "Model Select" menu, press MENU, to get the popup window, then select "BACKUP".
This should create a sub-directory called "MODELS" on the SD card, and then save the model as a file in that directory.
Now move to an empty model slot, press MENU again and select "RESTORE". Do you see the file that was saved listed?

Are all the SD cards you have tried 16Gb?
Having got a "Create Error" when trying to backup a model, it should have, at least, created a sub-directory "MODELS" on the root of the SD card. Do you have such a directory on the SD card now?

The largest capacity card I've got is only 8Gb, so I can't test a 16Gb card, but the 8Gb card works fine.

I'm sure we can locate the cause of your problem.

Look at my signature under my post. There is a link to a video playlist. There are videos explaining how to configure voice. Please note that they were made a few versions (of the firmware) ago so there are differences. For example, before we had only numbered voice files and today we have named voice files. But the way to program the voice events is basically the same.

There is also a manual that I will link when I get to a PC if someone doesn't do it before.

About the SD Card, I wonder if the problem is not so much their capacity, but the cards being class 10?? :o

I'll see about getting a 16Gb card (class 10) and investigating it.
Since 1Gb is more than large enough for most purposes on the radio, going to something larger than 8Gb isn't something I have bothered with. Over time, for testing purposes, I seem to have accquired 13 transmitters! So I have tended to go for the smaller (and class 4) SD cards. A single 16Gb card can be swapped between the radios for testing though.
