Sky9x Rotary Encoder Option

erskyTx runs on many radios and upgrade boards
ersky9x was a port of er9x for use on the sky9x board.

Also the top right pad of the top switch. Yes, the encoder board design needs two jumpers (or a tweak to the etch resist) to be used with the Sky9X.

magnetus,
I will likely need a rotary encoder PCB, too. I just got another 9x that I'm about to mod...
Last time I got the PCB from jpparisy. It was back in 2013, so I'm not sure if he has any left...

Probably the easiest way now is to order the PCBs from oshpark, or from iteadstudio. I think I'm gonna place an order in the next few days. I will be happy to share, if the price of shipping between continents will not kill all the fun...

Iksbob shared the design of the board on the 2nd page of this thread. Here's that link again: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9882625/NavWheelAdapt2.zip
Just unzip it and feed the wheelBoard.brd file to oshpark.com . OSHpark offers boards in a multiple of 3. So the minimum batch you could order is 3 PCBs.
I just checked, and OSHpark says the 3 PCBs will cost slightly less than $15...

Oh, I just realized that design includes an outline for a larger board. That confuses OSHpark's online processing... Try this archive instead. I just removed the unnecessary larger board dimension lines in Eagle, so it should be good (although not tested!).

I'm sure there were other people sharing board designs (probably based on Iksbob's file as well) - you can search in this thread if you want some alternative solutions.

Note: if you wish to use the encoder wheel on a stock 9x board - you need to add some resistors as described in this thread. Last time I just cut some tracks on the PCB and soldered resistors in place. This time I wish to do it right - I plan to modify the PCB design in order to include SMD resistors. But I will likely need a few more days for that (I have some other priorities at the moment).

Guys, where can I buy the encoder here in Europe? Mouser wants a stupid amount of money only for postage. Nearly 4 times the price of the part..
Thanks

João,

It seems these encoders are going out of stock (or simply are not stocked in Europe for some reason)... I'm planning to order some in US and get them here with a friend of mine (to save on shipping).
I can share some with you later on - let me know if you're interested. It will likely take some time though...

Hi,
I still have the PCBs available. Not sure when PM will be enabled - I guess you need to have 2-3 forum posts for that.
I'll drop you a PM with the details now, and hopefully you'll be able to see it!

hi guys. i am from malaysia and try to resource on this encoder thing. i am trying to have the cheapest option possible. andrew has this pcb. but if possible i would want the pcb together with the encoder. i could probably save more if it is shipped in one order. andrew has them too, but sadly the price of the encoder in his country cost way high thus making the whole cost including shipping a bit out of my budget range. does any of u guys have them in a set. if yes, how much is the price including shipping?

Yes you need that PCB.

Start reading here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1525#p21724

Also see this video (it is quite long)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgD_VLkfgkY

And here is a picture of my installation on my radio with m2561. For the 9xtreme board you install the encoder as if it was for a 9x board. The encoder is connected to the 9x mainboard, not the 9xtreme.
Please note the 3K9 resistors that connect to the 3 wires on the left side. These are connected to the encoder.

João, for ARUni board this pcb would be only a mechanical part to assemble it?

I don't know what you mean.. The PCB was designed to install the encoder on a 9x radio. For the ArUni, you probably would have to design another PCB depending on where you are installing it.
But even this PCB could maybe be used in another radio. I think that for the encoder's directional keys, you would have to use wires instead of pins..

The first link doesn't work. The PCB will work with the 9x mainboard, Skyboard and Ar9x board.
It is installed the same way on all of them except that on the skyboard and Ar9x board some shunts have to be soldered for the buttons to work. But that is not difficult.

Yes, that is the video that explains how to install. Pay special attention to the part where he explains which side up and down. The board can only be soldered in the right position, and you gotta have that right. No second chance :)
