Internal connection to DJT

Post by Scott Page » Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:18 am

I wanted to keep the connection to the DJT internal - so I examined the TX board and found I could cut it and cut into the side of the module to allow for the wires to remain unexposed for the telemetry hook-up. Not elegant -- but effective.

I still think mikes mod to send the signal down the unused pins is the best option :)

But good for all options available to be seen!

Same, the pins method isn't much more complicated, and still allows using several modules!

There's only one problem with modding the module to use the 2 pins.. The module is not certified anymore..
I did it that way but now I would have done it differently, That was the main reason I installed a DHT on my second radio instead of a DJT..

Interesting - I would have thought that any certification would only apply to the RF section of the module, rather than how the RS232 signals come in and out.

I think the module is a complete RF system.. If you change 1 screw it might not be certified anymore..the same applies to a radio with inbuilt RF system.. but I'm not sure on this one because we must be able to change modes for example. maybe there are exceptions..

The easy way our I guess has already been provided by Frsky on the form of the rs232 connector on the module back. The certification should have included something being connected to that connector?
What's needed is for Frsky to add dip switches to connect this pins internally to ground or the rs232 connector pins as part of their certification requirement. Then seal the module so it can't be tampered with?
Anyone breaking the seal accepts the consequences.
Perhaps not legal in some county but fortunately a properly modified module and tx pins cosmetically look the same as a stock one.
With all the FPV modules and increases in power on 433 and 900 bands I'm not sure how many will pass inspection by its governments RF enforcement or model insurance much longer?
Maybe not mention it and just fly?

I agree. That was my original intent, but there are two free pins and three wires and I was VERY tired by the time I got to that part so I probably should have set it down and come back today -- but I don't set projects down very well.. sort of have to press on no matter what sometimes. That get's me into trouble more than I care to admit.

again, I agree -- but with using several modules in a single transmitter would mean I would not NEED so many canvases to paint. Heck, the fun of this (for me) is watching the faces of the other people when I unveil yet another color or paint scheme.

Ok -- I know.. I could use the same module on a bunch of different transmitters. :ugeek:

Can some one please give me a link to FrSky DJT external module telemetry mod. I want the telemetry data on the 9x LCD. I need to see where in the 9x to wire up the module to the main PCB and I would would like to see my options of connecting these wires to the module (EG, from the back of the module, internal though the pins, etc).

Thanks in advance!

Probably the easiest way to accomplish this is with smartieparts telemetrEZ.

In case you don't want the TelemetrEZ board, this should get you started. read carefully the parts about cutting the traces on the back board. In one of the pins, traces should be cut on both sides of the board. Failing to do so will probably damage your frsky module..

Thanks João,

Thanks what I was looking for.

Soldering is the easy part, been doing it for 3 decades professionally, DIP packages back in the 70's to SMT in the early 80's to QFN, CSP and now BGA's with 0.4mm pitch (up to 50mmx50mm packages with 2000+ balls). I swapped out a blown 9X Atmel in less than a minute (PCB was out of the case).

Anyways, thanks for the info! Telemetry here I come :)

I think this is an easier way to do it without worrying about any module to be placed and with least mod on circuit boards.

As far as I remember, you take the screws out and lift it.. I did it quite a while ago.. but I think it's possible to lift one side even with the wires attached.

Ill do that. I only read that there are more tracks to cut at the rear of the board after I closed the case and turned it on.. Hopefully I didnt damage anything. The Telemetry did work...

I normally actually don't remove the board.

My trick is to simply drill a 1.5mm hole right through he pcb.

This takes out both tracks at the same time :-P

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and an owner to the TGY 9x who am just about to update to the DJT module. I've been trying to find good information on the web as how to connect telemetry but coming up empty handed until I fell over this thread. Unfortunately many of the links posted are broken so I wonder if some gentle soul could point me in the proper direction for a how to. If it is to any help I am running Arducopter on APM and my solution today is 3DR's telemetry to the phone only. I've seen that a bridge can be created to make use of bluetooth on the DJT module which sounds great but would be maybe a second step, first I want to have it running on the 9X screen.
I'm also under the understanding that Im gonna need some kind of adapter for the mavlink protocol, is that so and where is it connected, in the radio or on the copter?

many thanx in advance.

/Philip

Thanks Mike. I've read around the places you proposed and not much is specifically for the module I'm asking (they are two fairly good guides), but I think I can put it together. Is it correct that the rerouting of the two gpio pins is the same regardless of radio module? In that case its just about finding a good guide for every individual procedure. I've already made the firmware upgrade mod and moved the antenna out to be able to switch modules. =)

Yes, re-routing the two pins is the same for all modules.
The way I modified the DJT is shown in the links in this post: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=994&p=76162&hilit= ... pdf#p76162.
The DJT does output full RS232 voltages, so you need a voltage translator.
