spektrum module build question

Hi all - new to the 9x forums.
I want to add dsm2 capability to my turnigy 9x - I've seen the new jr compatiable spektrum module, but I'd like to see if I could build my own for a fraction of the cost.
You can get the case for $12 on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spektrum-SPM681 ... 1393wt_689
There are also, plenty of spektrum modules for sale cheap in busted blade radios, (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spektrum-HP6DSM ... 2570b2f0d2.) & I've seen the internal mod how-to http://er9x.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/do ... 0Guide.pdf - simple enough.
I'd like to attempt a spin on this & build a removable module - anyone seen anything like this or have some thoughts? I apologize if this has been covered.

My implemtation is detailed here:
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=541#p6462

It uses the stock module case and board, but if you can get another case then just put all the components mentioned in the guide Rob directed you to (HK 3.3V UBEC, diode, resistor and of course DSM module) in the case and you're done.

Thanks for the info guys! I'm starting to see lots of 9ch modules go for less than $100 on eBay. I wonder how much longer it would be worth it to do this project before they drop n price even more?

Not DSMX, but they are the DM9's that are on clearance pretty much everywhere.

I modified a module case using a FlySky module and a Frsky back because it had the correct cable and antenna connector and it was extra.
The mod went perfect and I flew a SkySurfer, my test plane, everywhere and just about out of sight. At the same time the space shuttle heading for LAX was in the distance.
I'm happy to say both my plane and the shuttle both had great flights and a safe landing!
What a great day for flying I had. Thanks to all the great info my DSM build works the first time flown.
Next comes the teasing I'm going to do to the dx8 flyers flying foamies!
Then maybe the turbine flyers next just to get the word out.

Can I do the module DSM2 hack , without flashing to ER software ?

What I meen is, putting in the module from a DX4e transmitter, with a switch, to switch back and forth from originale Turnigy module on the back, to the DSM2 module. WITH the originale software...?

A quick answer is no!
The er9x DSM firmware gives you model match, and a bind switch. The stick firmware has no way of providing these functions. I'm pretty sure the pluses train has also been modified so it can talk to the DSM addition.
The flashing and addition of the programmer is pretty simple to do and there is a non solder option with a Smartieparts board.

If you want to stick with original software, you have to find a Spektrum DM8 or DM9 module.
Or use an arduino between the 9x and the DX4e module, there is someone who made an arduino-based PPM to DSM converter.

In the mod sites I have seen, there is nowhere written that You have to flash the prom with ER9 software , to get the DX4e module to work. Why not write that in the explanation on modding ?

So first of i have to flash the prom

Second i Can do the DSM2 hack with the switch i want between the originale and the DSM2 .

Well, the first step in the guides is to change the useless stock firmware, so yes, it's ind of implied that the other mods require it :P
